Ok, so I just got back from a long 3 week vacation only to find that Eve has changed somewhat since I've been gone (some of it's still the same, like the lack of new skills. . .) and I've since found out I can no longer use my antimater ammo at all ranges as I use to.
Question is, should I stick with AM and just stay closer? Has anyone had any luck with using Iron and it's 20% increase in range? As I'm a drone man myself, I like to stay out of the fight as long as possible, so I'm leaning towards the middle of the spectra where I can still hit for decent points and not be too taxed on range.
Or should I just go a third route entirely and train up Sharpshooting (I believe that's the skill that increases weapon range) and not worry about the range decreases the ammo brings?
Edit: The reason I ask about the skill is that I only have 3 gunnery skills to my name being an R&D man and not much of a fighter.

Thorium offers the most damage for least range penalty. Though AM works fine too on blasters. ------

Yup, for the Heavy Ions I use AM, since their Opt range is so short anyway, 1500 m isn't much of a difference in combat. Thorium is a nice one, I also mix Uranium and Iridium in there just for sh*t's and giggles. I haven't used Iron charges since my 3rd day, so I can't tell you how effective they are. ------------------------------------- Interm-CEO for EVE Marshals http://www.EVEMarshals.com |

Training sharpshooting is great, you basically offset a lot of the ammo penalties.
I use thorium and with sharpshooting lvl 3, am actually gaining range. |

I use Iron and thorium... I prefer thorium, but iron works well (just in case you run out of thorium). As I use lasers with radio (long range) and multifrequency (low range), I seldom use antimater. My hybryd weapons is always load with thorium or iron.. (\_/) (O.o) (> <)=Oveur (proof) "Jumping 50 systems I can like, have sex 150 times during that period" |

I now carry two or three different kinds of ammo for different ranges. AM for when I get up close and personal, Uranium when I'm just toodling around and don't care much. Tungstin when I want to reach out and touch someone.
But either way... you need a lead off weapon to strip shileds like missiles or lasers. Then use the hybrids for the damage.

I like Close combat so i use Antimatter.
i use 1 Medium Beam Laser with Radio S and 2 Regulated light ion both with anitmatter S. Lazer for long range and ions for close combat. its a good tactic if the ship is faster than you and hes running away just outside the ions range.
