This doesn't look like it hit the big league news yet much, probably for good reason, but it's somewhat intriguing at first sight.
http://falkvinge.net/2013/02/07/court-of-human-rights-convictions-for-file-sharing-violates-human-rights/ Worthy of note that the verdict was to upheld the original penalties, HOWEVER, the sub-verdicts are the very least a bit interesting.
The bottom line appears to be (and I repeat, APPEARS to be) that copyright law is supposedly now officially considered at odds with freedom of speech, and that violating copyright law alone might not always necessarily be quite enough for a conviction.
I don't exactly trust the veracity of that particular person's conclusions, it's most likely a gross exaggeration, if not even completely wrong... but hey, who knows. The internet is not exactly very helpful on the matter just yet (maybe with some extra digging later). Anybody have a better "view" on the subject ?

So its okay to share the culture then.
So all football and porno is now open for free downloading.
What if you said watching good movies with friends was your culture. So its legal to download any movie really? Or your culture was making fun of french films, so you can download any french film.
Wonder what culture the judges will decide on. Probably old films, or new ones I suppose. Signature removed for inappropriate language - CCP Eterne |

and even then I'm not so sure. Even the biggest piece of crap movie or music ever spewed by mankind's collective rectum can be considered culture.

File sharing is the equivalent to advertising. If nobody is sharing your product, there's something wrong with it.
Studies show that people who share files buy more media (I've ignored the obvious filesharer centric sites such as Torrentfreak) http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2005/jul/27/media.business http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/10/16/file_sharers_buy_more_music/ http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20090828/0444096038.shtml http://slashdot.org/topic/bi/file-sharing-doesnt-discourage-buying-study/
For reference see the film Gigli, it was so dire that the filesharers just ignored it.
