Good god man why?
Seriously why?

Have you ever heard of a game like EVE (EQ, UO and so on) that was released on Linux? It¦s hard to maintain an online game that provides a profit at the end of the month... a Linux Version.. muhahahah... ---------------------------------------- www.stealth.se |

If so it'll be the first time DirectX has run outside Windows :)

Because its completely free ? If you have not yet seen KDE 3.1 I wouldn't knock Linux just yet.

It is possible to run EQ under Linux. Why not Eve? I have it not tested myself.
And why: Because Linux is better =)

Though if CCP isn't going to bother using a real server cluster (aka unix) for this, that should tell you all you need to know about a linux port.

Maybe I wasn't too clear, but AFAIK EVE only runs on DirectX, which is not available outside Windows.

Eve worked great in Linux (under WINE) during the beta (when Eve used DirectX8), but then CCP upgraded the game to use DirectX9.
Tragically, DirectX9 isn't yet supported by WineX. And Icculus is snowed under with the Linux servers for UT2k3, BF1942, and a couple of other major FPS games.
CCP have always said they won't implement a native Linux client. Which is a pity for those of us who use it, but there we go.
Of course, WineX gets updated pretty frequently, so your mileage may vary. If you get it working, do please drop me an Evemail...

Axelay, How can you say only UNIX is a Proper Cluster...
I'm a cluster specialist, and UNIX requires so much extra software to run a cluster it's untrue.
The cluster that CCP have using Windows probably only needs some fine tuning to allow for more users than the spec'd 25000 currently. To be honest a Geoprahically dispersed cluster would work far more better than the current single cluster in London.
And before everyone says I'm a Bill Gates lover or some rubbish like that.. I am not I can see a use for Sun and other varients of Unix, in the right situation. Desktops I have to say are not really an environment for Unix.
P.S. CCP If you want some help on the cluster I'll come over and discuss if you like, all I need is accomodation, food and BEER --------------------------------- No Slugs were harmed in the creation of this signature --------------------------------- |

1 percent of the desktop isnt worth building a client for.
Check www.tpc.org if you doubt that Windows scales.

"doesnt winx need a windows installation NEway? so why the heck would u want to run eve under linux then?"
No. You need the WineX source, GCC, and some patience (and of course the rest of the obvious stuff). No windows installation, no nooothing. ;) Actually I switched back to windows on my desktop when EVE was released. :/ |

I'd be more interested in a Mac OS X version. Bigger (albeit still insignificant compared to Windows) chunk of users too.

"If so it'll be the first time DirectX has run outside Windows :)"
Been done plenty of times, thanks to WineX (http://www.transgaming.com/)
I haven't tried EVE with the latest WineX, there was a release a month or so ago that had a LOT of work done on DX9 support.
BTW, if you're willing to pay Transgaming's subscription fee, it's a LOT easier to install WineX, just grab an RPM or other appropriate package. :) Also, it gives you the ability to vote. If enough people push for it, EVE could make it onto Transgaming's list of games to specifically target for support.
Skarsnik: If Windows is sooo incredibly good for clustering, then why are only *two* of the top 500 supercomputing clusters in the world running Windows of any form? (http://www.top500.org/) - Number 50 and Number 57 are Windows networks, and 1/7 of the speed of the top Linux-based cluster (#3) There are just as many clusters built by Linux Networx alone as Windows networks. Every single one of the IBM xSeries clusters are Linux, and all of the pSeries clusters are AIX.

Muahahahahahahhaha! This is such a load of rubbish it's untrue!
A cluster specialist - please! You insult those of us who know what we're doing.
Solaris is clustered with Sun Cluster Services - 1 piece of software that is trivial to setup and configure. Or you can use Veritas Cluster Server - even easier to setup and install.
Tru64 comes with TruCluster out of the box. You can have an 8 way cluster up and running in under an hour.
IRIX comes with FailSafe software out of the box - you just need a license.
Quite why anyone would want to run EVE on Linux escapes me.
You have a PC toy, you have a toy OS, and you have your games.
<shakes head> Deary me.

Stable, fast, efficient resource use and monolithic kernels are a passing fad. No one should use anything but Windows for servers.
Who cares if the client memleak per hour is more memory than the entire 60's Space Program? Who cares if production servers need to be rebooted every single day? Pshaw, i say! Everyone's already used to such unstable, unreliable behaviour; to change things now would only shock and confuse the feeble-minded public.
The important thing to remember, above all, is that Windows has no bugs. Bill said it himself, so it must be true. Patches are for features, not mistakes. Remember, he's rich! And he bought Q-DOS from a Unix hacker with Mommy's money! So don't contradict him!

I knew I would get flamed for this topic but I figured I would post anyway. By the way a Windows Server Enviornment? Yuck, no wonder we get stuck in "gates" and the servers crash so often...

Indeed if WineX supported DX9 i would have played on my Debian desktop... However i know a Linux programmer that made GTA Vice city run on his Debian and code the game himself in such a way that he had a car that weight 1kg and could go as fast as a rocket... Maybe he can mess around with Eve client to get it stable on a Linux desktop.
PS: the memory leak in windows is good reason to stabilize it with Linux since Linux uses less computer resources... I wonder if WineX uses linux in such a way that it acts like a virtual machine and thus creating an same enviroment... Wouldnt mather then.. No win situation. __________________________

*spew* you owe me a new keyboard. wow. making debian play nice with xwindows with normal stuff is no trivial feat in and of itself, but he kludged GTA:vc? Maybe he can apply to CCP to help out some =8)

Ahhh the Linux fanbois hath come to your rescue :).
I think I will let the stats and whatnot speak for themselves...
Linux desktop? LOL riiight.
Linux will always be the little ***** software that sits in the corner and does my little deeds.
Why even try? :)
Linux has its place and it isn't the desktop ;).
I dunno about you guys but I can crash linux just as well as windows.
Linux and resources please give me a break windows doesn't eat resources if you config it properly ;).

Well, with respect to the EVE servers running Windows, repeat after me one hundred times:
GUIs are a waste of resources on a server. GUIs are a waste of resources on a server. GUIs are a waste of resources on a server.
"Well, that's not really "outside Windows" is it ?
Okay, I meant DirectX running native on a platform other than Windows."
"outside of Windows" is EXACTLY what it is. WineX is NOT the same as VMWare and similar emulation packages which run a windows installation inside a virtual machine. (BTW, WINE stands for WINE Is Not an Emulator.) WINE is basically a wrapper that translates Win32 API calls into POSIX/X/etc. calls. WineX is a fork that has focused on DirectX support, so it operates by translating DX calls into OpenGL calls. (And quite efficiently so in some cases.) WineX (And all other WINE variants) can operate completely independently from Windows.
Edit: GOD the linewrapping on these forums is screwy.

Well, you *can* use M$ to be the OS on a 'cluster'... but it won't be very scalable. Check the top 500 list and count up how many don't use some *NIX variant... it'll be a very short list.
Actually, you need very little "extra" software to run a linux cluster... and that which you need is usually available for free. You just don't get a nice little point-and-click configuration tool for the unix stuff... but it'll be faster and more stable in most cases, especially at larger scales (try running M$ on a 1000+ node cluster and let me know how well it works out ;-)

Bad H please show me somewhere that shows linux with a hefty share of the desktop market...?
Can anyone show me a site of a *name brand* that sells desktops for mom and dad with slackware installed?
Anyone?
I use linux for specific roles at work and even at home. I also use Novell AND Windows certain products have their places.
When all my games run in linux better than windows then I will switch but I can assure you that would be a cold day in hell when that happens :).
