I know this is an old debate, but the description in the salvage skill box recently changed since I came back to EVE. I asked in some chats and got conflicting answers. Does salvage skill affect your ability to access salvage or does it affect how much salvage you get? Does higher salvage skill = more higher quality salvage? |

Can anyone explain what these levels are? I know that T2 wrecks need a higher Salvage skill level than T1 for example, but is there anyone that can break it all down? What do I get for Salvaging 5?

Though I don't believe it is fully accurate - its not that you need salvaging level 3 to salvage tech 2 wrecks, its simply that tech 2 wrecks have a negative penalty to the chance and sleeper battleships have a bigger penalty. You can get round that by say using rigs.
Salvaging V is actually very worthwhile when you crunch the numbers:
Salvaging IV - base chance to salvage = 20% (4 * 5%)
Salvaging V - base chance to salvage = 35% (5 * 7% as you can now use t2 salvager)

When my character was new, and only had Salvaging 2, I encountered an "elite commander wreck" and the message it gave me was that my salvaging skill was too low. So I believe that scanning guide is correct that you need at least level 3 for T2 salvage. |

Nope, you can get around that with rigs....
It should really say your salvaging ability/chance is too low |

Does Salvaging skill impact the Salvage ability of Salvage Drones (i.e. percent chance) or is just the Drone level the factor. And if its just the drones, are they even able to salvage the higher tech stuff that normally requires high Salvage skill to access? |

Only the salvage drone skill helps salvage drones. And yes, that means that at max skills the max salvage chance you can get is 13%. Elite battleship wrecks cannot be salvaged with drones. |

only real advantage of salvaging 5 is T2 salvagers are much better. But even then you will only notice a difference salvaging sleepers in a class 4 or higher. However a couple salvage rigs can easily make up the difference.
Having T2 salvagers and salvage rigs on a Noctis will be much faster salvaging sleepers as you will rarely get a failed salvage attempt, but T1 salvagers and rigs will still get the job done. I believe you still need salvaging 4 even with rigs and noctis bonus to access some of the highest quality sleeper wrecks. |
