Just wondering if I was restricted to buying ships of my own race.
If not, any bonuses for sticking to race or penalty for not?

you can buy and fly other race ships too, you just need to learn the skills for them.
and get the isk to buy them ofcourse

You can buy and fly ships of any race...you just need the skills to use them. And of course a little money to buy those ships couldn't hurt either  If you are Caldari or Gallente, it makes the most sense to train for both race's ships...it will only take maybe an extra 5-7 days, depending on your learning skills. Both use hybrid guns and having a choice between missiles/drones or a combination of both can be very beneficial for missions/rat hunting/mining and many other professions.

Any race can fly any race's ship. You just need the skill for it (Amarr Frigate for Amarr frig's, Gallante Frigate for Gallante frig's, and so on), and of course, the money for the frigate :P

I'm a Caldari who likes Amarr Battleships, Minmatar frigates, and Gallente cruisers.

Remember to train the right weapons too. Gallente ships don't get bonuses for Projectile weapons, they get bonuses for Hybrid weapons.

One thing worth noting: you can buy a shuttle belonging to any race.
When I first started playing, all the race-specific ships and the race-specific skills required to fly them conditioned me to think that I couldn't buy another race's shuttle and use it. This is good to remember if you're one day at a station in a region whose sovereignty is not the same as yours, you are in need of a shuttle, and can only find "foreign" shuttles for sale.
