There's a few situations I have come across, at least in hisec, one being trying to alpha mining barges, the other freighters where I was wondering if there was any tactic for another ship to act as overwatch, so in effect, either give it more survival ability with a boost or logi chain etc, or extra ability to get the hell out.
The only data I seem to be able to find is that one ship can web a friendly ship and allow it to warp faster. I can't find any other example of anything else that can be done. Apparently using a scout can be worked around with a small ship being used to bump to stop aligning while perfoming a login-warp (or login trap? I think)
If someone wanted an escort in high, is such a thing functionally possible or would the attackers simply alpha the freighter anyway?
When you freight in low/null, if ships act as escorts, do they just simply rely on the EHP of the freighter for it's survival, or do people actually assign logi ships as well?

When moving through Null/Low have scouts all around and use Rapiers to web the frieghter off the gate (2x 60% will instawarp a freighter).

The nullsec freighter ops I've been involved with rely almost entirely on secrecy for their success, a webbing ship (Huginn or Rapier) provides the only tangiable support the freighters have. Because secrecy is never guarenteed however most have a reasonable combat fleet in escort, not so much to protect the freighter (it safes as soon as one of the scouts sees potential trouble) but to discourage the casuals; a roaming gang which comes upon a freighter will almost certainly make hay, while if they come across a substantial fleet they're likely to look for easier targets elsewhere (reducing the potential delays and therefore the chances of more significant forces becoming involved).
In High sec I've run freighter ops more as a team building exercise than anything else. I prefer to use a Daredevil or Cruor in this case, primarily because it's easy enough to get into but actually means the pilot doing something, he has to avoid bumping the freighter for example. In these cases we've used link-heavy command ships, logis and jammers and fast lock combat ships (most often destroyers but often it's what the pilot chooses to bring) which, in combination, may even have screwed with people's calcs enough to turn a profitable gank into a failure but probably makes almost no practical difference. The biggest contributor to the safety of those ops however was the use of scouts - a huge cluster of 'nados, Apoc's, or way back in the day, Dominix on a gate is a good reason not to go to a system... The thing with that sort of op though is that it gets everyone into a mindset and gives them a grounding in fleet movement - it's not the same as 0.0 but it's not bad preparation - and everyone remembers them.

Another way to do it bu costs a bit is to ship whatever things you need with a JF or a carrier, light cyno and jump. *removed inappropriate ASCII art signature* - CCP Eterne |

Escort isn't really the right term, as due to the game mechanics it's largely almost impossible to achieve.
If someone really wants to blow up your cargo ship, it's gonna blow up. All you can do is deal with the aftermath of the pretty fireworks. In highsec you can't pre-emptively deal with potential agressors because of concord, which then leaves your cargo ship unescorted.
The game mechanics favour the aggressors. |

In high, you need to live long enough for Concord to respond. Logi and ECM can buy you precious time if the gank is built on DPS like most of the recent ones insetad of alpha. Your best defense is usually not loading the freighter with too much value. |
