I was recently swindled by someone and feel furious that there is no way to find out who is really responsible for this. The fact that someone can create a character and go engage in activities such as conning ppl then just transfer everything to his or her real character and poof, nothing to worry about is ridiculous.
I propose having an indicator on how long a character has existed. Many ppl have excellent security status and that is a good indicator of their time in the game but for ppl who have low sec rating you are left wondering. Can you please make it so there is birthdate for character, that way we can tell who is conning ppl very easy. Seems ridiculous that there isn't anyway to check on someone, like a background check or total skill points check.
Do something about this please.

well its up to you... dont trust persons after a short time. i personaly dont want to show other players my birthdate, skills points or whatever that could give me a "rating". security rating is all you have. also a birthdate wouldnt help. i have 3 chars since the beginning of time. what would you give the hint that one off the other two is actually me or trustworthy? none. and thats good the way it is.

The object is that if ppl want to scam ppl they can do it but not with disposeable characters. If you you created 3 characters at the beginning of the game and started scamming ppl with this one word would get out and you couldn't use that guy as effectively. You could delete and make a new one but then ppl would see he's brand new.
I think Total skill points would be an excellent way to discourage this because it represents time that a player puts into a character. If someone has 20k skill points then you shouldn't do business with them as they have nothing to lose if they rob you.
If you have 2 million skill points then you know if he robs you he isn't going to delete his account and disappear.
Mabye this could be an agent feature?
Security status isn't helpful in these matters because it only reflects combat. Merchants don't typically fight.

Just out of curiousity, how do people scam in Eve?
If someone I don't know asks me for something of any value I'm just going to laugh at them *shrug*

Corp panel -> Members tab -> Edit Member -> General tab.
Date of Birth... right there...
You need to have the required role though to be able to access this panel.
Quite funny to have a new recruit claiming to be playing two months and having 1+ mil skillpts when their char has 0.0 sec and is 4 days old *grin*

On the subject of alts, I think there should be a skill & agents able to dig info up and find out certain player's alts, at some cost, and with a possibility of error... Then you could also have skills & agents that reduce your chances of being linked to your alt(s).

Back before release (and even testing for that matter), CCP said that CEOs would be able to see which corporations the alternate character(s) of their employees belonged to. This was meant to enable CEOs to have a fighting chance of figuring out who might be a security risk or not.
As far as I know the feature isn't implemented.

My preferred route would be to have a % of skill points from an account with that character displayed next to them. It doesn't tell you how old they are or in any way compromise their privacy, except in that it tells you that they are likely to be an alt if the % is less than 90%.

Oh my, the Solution is SO simple, just dont allow Players to have more than one Character, why should you have more than if you can only train one at a time... |

U dont make Sense Man... Specialisation is the word for alts. Astrid here is at scout and fighter pilot, exploring the stars, taking on agent missions, provide support and protection to her mining comrades from her corp. Her broter Siegfried Tron (alt) is - as to his attributes especially, but also his skills - oriented towards research, contributing to the corp in this way, and exploring this side of the eve univers. Making it impossible to train with more than one character at the time, prevents that the lamers who do naught but playing gets too much of an edge over those spend a more moderate amount of time playing. --------------------------------------------- When you have to kill a man, it takes nothing to be polite |

I'm with Greeble... the ability to see who alts are, if they are in a corp etc, maybe to see where they are on the map would be nice. but only to see members in our corp... don't really want to be big brother. ;)

in a MMORPG you have other People to fill those Roles, you dont have to do all yourself. But i admit that a pure Scientist or Producer char is not that much fun |

just have a 'known associates' list in every players info page. if a player deletes the alt char dont remove it from the list, just flag it as deceased. just my 2isk worth ______________

a serial number for each account that can be seen by all, is a much better idea imho. Ppl should not be able to use alt char to scam ppl and get away with it. With a serial number for an account, at least we will know who the main character is, and get revenge. ---

In real life one can do back ground checks on people if large amounts of money are at stake. The easiest way to implement this in EVE is an Age Scale. Have a field indicating an Age Scale of 1 to 6
1: More than 1 week old 2: More than 2 weeks old 3: More than 1 month old 4: More than 3 months old 5: More than 6 months old 6: More than 1 year old
The idea being an older char that u haven't heard about as being a scammer is likely to be ok. It is also rather unlikely a 1 month old char will try to scam you in a deal for a few 100k.
Security rating is a very poor indication. I deal in 10's of millions of ISK with people and have a security rating of 0.0, as do a lot of other specialist manufacturing / mining / research / trading peeps.
A high security rating is a good sign but security rating tells u absolutely nothing about the vast majority of players in EVE who do not have high security ratings.

Well, the real rule of thumb is to assume they are a con artist. Never give them payment up front. Never loan them money. Always make sure when doing mineral deals for anything that you have the product in the same trade window as all your minerals before you accept it. Make sure there's the right number of zeros in the money they add to the deal. Etc, etc. Really, just like in real life, the key to not getting scammed out of money is to be smart about it.
Don't fall for the old "gimme the minerals first so I can build it for you" gag. Don't fall for the "I need the money to get it for you, then I'll trade it to you, I promise" gag. If someone is messaging you saying you won something but have to pay to get it, don't believe them. Don't pay anything to recieve a prize of any kind. If something seems too good to be true, it's probably some kind of scam.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the people that think that it is fair to have a tracking ID (or any ability to see what your ALTs have). Before you decide to sling mud my way, know this; our corp was the victim (several times) to conmen and thieves. I know first hand how it feels to have your hard earned ISK wasted on a bogus trade, or loose a weeks worth of minerals because some jackass decided that you looked ripe and too trusting for your own good. Even though I have been just as screwed as anyone else (even lost BP's to a corp infiltrator back in the early days), I think that to allow another person to see your ALTs or anything about the ALT is not appropriate. I would love an easy way to track people for revenge sure, but I also know that there are some people that use ALTs as just that, an Alternate personality. The reason to have an ALT in the first place is to allow your self a wide range of options for role-playing. I have seen several players out there that do this they role play a legitimate business person on one character and then role-play a pirate or slave trader on the other(s). I can hear some of you now, "how can you keep from taking on the traits of the other character if you are in fact the person controlling the characters?" Well for a lot of role-players I have had the (dis) pleasure of playing with I would say you can't prevent the bleed over, I mean some people just don't have the creative imagination to pull that off.
I would, even though I hate the con game I get screwed on, hate to see CCP add ALTs tracking to the game. As far as I am concerned this would cast blame on those players that did have the mental faculties to play multiple characters, one legitimate well-balanced member of society and have some fun playing the villainous scum that is a pirate or thief. IMHO I think this would detract from the one thing that does work without bugs (role-play).
Just my $0.02 nonsequitur...

they might not even play their alt themselves, they could be letting their wife/mate/kid have a character too.
You wouldn't pod a lady because her husband stole your eggs now, would you? .
