I have some questions about the scanner. First, how do you change the scanner to view 360 degrees? Mine is set at 180 and I can't figure out how to change it. Also, I'll fly into a system, go to the star and do a scan, and get back a list of a ton of cargo containers. I check out the belts and stargates and I don't see them anywhere. I'll even check out stations and still nothing. Is there any way I can warp directly to them from their listing in the scanner with some kind of special equipment?

"1.0 to 0.8.....Bit of a no brainer to be honest. It's worth using the 'trawling' method here, simply fly from belt to belt, first to last. warp in at 15k and set your overview to show secure containers. They can't be anchored here and there are a suprising number of people who leave them unattended."
Correct me if i'm wrong but...does that mean that if you use a secure container in 1.0-.8 space you can get into it like a jet-can? And if not, is there some method of getting into secure containers that I don't know about? (I mean they do have passwords right? But i've never really tried blowing one up...hmm)

It's really quite simple. At some point in the game, it became impossible to anchor containers in 1.0-.8 space. The containers that were anchored already are safe and you can't do anything to them other than blow them up, but any new drops are left unanchored. And until you anchor a secure container, it's just a heavily armored jetcan.

Find some nice juicy miners jetcan mining. Target and look at the can you intend to steal. Select from your overview the station your hauler is docked at and place it 'in front of' the can you are looking at so that they are in a straight line (the can would block your view of the station if you were within visual range). Now rotate your view so that the station is right in the very middle at the top of the screen... i.e. you are looking down on the can. Zoom out a few klicks and activate your tactical map. Select (hopefully) an asteroid around 10k to 12k roughly behind the can so that you now have the station, can and asteroid in a nice line. You can now use the asteroid as a warp in point so that you arrive as close to the can as possible, if you judge it nicely you may even come out of warp within looting distance of the can giving you the element of surprise and giving the hapless miners no chance.

Wees.
The Revelations expansion makes it a lot easier. Just use your capsule and drop a BM at the can. You can fly around in your capsule just like a frigate, thus saving the trouble of carrying a frigate around with you, you can open a can from your capsule, although you can't take from it, and you can warp to zero right at the BM that you dropped.
