Certainly starting out, certificates are a great way to go. After you decide what you want to do long term you can wing it more. |

I have been using certificates this way too. I think it works well as a way to be sure you are training the right way. Myself for instance have been doing the "core" certification tree. I now have the basic done and am going to switch on to the drones and gunnery trees for a while. |

The certificates are good as suggestions for what to train, and they're spot-on if you're a newbie. After a few months/years of skill training, though, CCP's guesses about what you might want to train start being wrong, so when you get to that point train the skills you want regardless of certificates. |

Currently there is no way to train beyond 24 hours correct? My job frequently requires me to be away from home. How do players that have jobs that require travel keep up their training?? THanks for all the great info! |

Basic and Standard level certificates are reasonably good guidelines to follow for 'most' areas. Improved and Elite levels have more dubious relevance, and tbh by these levels you should have a much better idea of what you want to do, and the skills that you will need to accomplish that.
The skill-queue will allow you add a skill that will fit within it's time constraints. ie a skill that takes more than 23hr 59m 59s to train will prevent you adding further skills. if your queue has les than 23hr 59m 59s of queued skills you can add another skill of any duration onto the end. |

Pick a skill that is longer than 24 hours and put that last in the queue. For example frig lvl 5 is 5 days so I can stack up the queue and then with a few mins left on the blue line drop in Frig 5

Basic, Standard, and Improved certificates are fine. I strongly recommend Core Competency Standard.
The Elite certificates are more like personal achievements, example: Hull Tanking Elite. Don't take them too seriously.
I dislike the Leadership and Harvesting certificates, as several are stupid in my opinion. |

Personally, I ignore them. |

While having a plan is a good thing do not for one second let that plan stand in the way of having fun. Many people (me included) do the "well, I'm now training such and such so I won't be able to do anything for the next 3 weeks, might as well not log in really".
Especially when you're new you need to train a thousand different things and all with different attributes. Forcing yourself into a specific attribute or route means you're robbing yourself of the fun and need of sampling different things. While the OCD "lets max my skill gain" can be useful it almost always means you're limiting your options. Amat victoria curam. Excellence in everything.

Yeah, my main advice regarding training is not to worry about it too much. Just focus on getting a bunch of level 3s in a wide array of stuff for the first few weeks, then grab 4s where it'll give you better modules and a couple 5s here and there on the x1 skills when you find you need them.
The idea that you need to obsessively min/max plans is more a relic of the bad old days of learning skills and fixed stats than something that's really relevant to the current state of the game.
And yeah, basic certificates are a decent guide for what you need for a given task, I'd adjust stuff manually after that for the most part.
(Well, rather, you probably should, I'm at the point where I leave my queue open for weeks and it doesn't bother me much.) |

This.
I (advice to) use certs as guidelines. Evemtually you wi get to a point where you know what you want and need to skill yourself.
Also some certs have really weird and unneeded skills in them, so dont blindly follow them but look at them for suggestions. |

Why I need targetting lvl 4 for basic core is beyond me. All the ships I can fly can only lock 4 targets anyway, targetting lvl 2 gets me that. |

That's cause there are a lot of ships that can target more then 4 things.
Targeting to 5 is actually quite a nice skill to have, most more advance ships can target up to 6 things at once. And you do know that there are more advanced ships later on .
The targetting skill isn't that weird, later on it asks you for multitasking 5, which is kind of weird unless you fly logistics or a carrier (aka capital logistics). Other then those 2, there is really no need for more then 5 or 6 things locked. |

There you go again. why do you have to be so bloody snippy in your replies? All the basics certificates are around frigs and fitting skills that are lvls 2 and three. all the frigs I have seen have 4 targets locked max so the Basic core should be lvl 3 not 4.
Yes I know there are bigger ships Yes I know targeting 5 will be good later on Yes I know you like to reply to people looking for help with a condescending uncouth manner.

Trolling is prohibited. Trolling is the word used to describe a post that is deliberately designed for the purpose of angering and insulting the players. Posts of this nature are disruptive and do not contribute to the sense of community we want for our forums.

Clearly you don't now the definition of trolling.
I said there are a lot of ships which can lock more then 4 targets (fact) I then showed that even T1 frigs (in response to NO frig in game can lock more then 4 targets) have 4+ target locks (fact). So targeting at 4 is a very decent skill to have, even if you are a frigate pilot (fact).
That you don't understand how the majority of EVE works, we can help you with it. But you should really change your attitude and start being open to advice and suggestions. Without them, likely you will start to hate EVE and it's players... |

What you want to do is start with the learning skills, and then the advanced learning .... oh wait. They are gone?
Well then start grinding standings so you can get the R&D agents and get in the lotto for T2 BPO's... That gone too?
As a bitter vet, I have not really examined Certificates. They are a nice enhancement. I would suggest that you set a goal for what activity you want to do (missions, minnig, hauling, exploration....) and select a ship that will give you the best advantages. T2 mods are a must and don't forget the support skills for DPS and tank.
You can race to a battleship (as I did) but if you don't have the proper skills to fly it or the income stream to replace it, don't bother doing anything but spinning it. They do still have that, correct?
Don't get so involved with obtaining Certs that you don't understand the skills you are training. There will come a time when it all clicks and you begin to kick yourself for training mistakes you've made in the past.
(I always though cross training would come in handy if I saw another race BS just floating in space, funny that has not happened yet)
