I am a long time player of EVE. In fact, it is the only reason why I have a dual-boot system.
I am wondering is if there are any plans for a full Linux client of EVE. If there is not, would CCP be willing to cooperate with Transgaming or other members of the Wine Development Community on allowing connectivity to the EVE servers from Linux?
As the client runs based on Maya and Python, one would not imagine that there would be too much that is restricting it from being run under Windows only.

The game is built on DirectX not OpenGL - so I'm not terribly optimistic about a native port.

You can run it under Wine I believe. Look in the known issues forum.

I don't think there will be a native client.
Cedega should work with 4.4 as there where some improvements http://digital-conquest.ath.cx/wiki/index.php/Eve but I don't think there will be much improvements thx to the transgaming voteing system (hl2, bf2 and wow stuff only)
wine doesn't show the login screen wine with directx patch shows the login screen but does start the game

It is possible to run eve on linux. Somehow.
However I connot see the dev spending much time and effort on something only few people will benefit from (espicialy as you can acctualy do it).

i have my self a linux dedicated box and a Windows gaming box :) admittibly getting it to run was a pain in the NECK! but it worked... gaming on the windows box (no matter how horridly bodgy it is) and the linux runs my server stuff and files.. although a few client issues might be fixed under a linux system.... no more desktopping... :) ahh bliss

In general the EVE client should run well on Linux (python for sure will) if the DirectX Renderer is exchanged by a OpenGL Renderer. (Performancewise we might even see better gfx performance with OpenGL)

When I did a hard core sit down with EVE/Cedega/Linux (Mandrake 10.1) in no way shape or form would I ever try to play it during its current state unless I sat in a station all day.
Basically there is a render issue that still isn't fixed. Cedega 4.4 *Might* fix it. And I would finally give up Winblowz if it did... but I 0.0 so eh... I don't wanna CTD during a massive BS spawn.
