Just watched the trailer for this. Is it just me, or have they managed to miss out the pant-filling horror of the game?

*Yawn*
The Hollywood \/\/hore machine doesn't get it. It's a heck of alot more fun to play than to watch The Rock do it. But just watch, a gazillion fanbois will flood the theater on opening day and encourage more.....Half - Life anyone? They're currently in the process of screwing up Aeon Flux....blah

Winky
Doom3 has some truely cinemagraphic moments in it. Such as hearing the logs about people slowly going mad, and the classic SystemShock inspired medical bay scenes. I got bored and stopped playing it half-way through as it continued to use the monster jumping out of cupboard gag, and relied less and less on building atmosphere.
Half-Life 2, also mentioned above, has far fewer memorable moments. The game plays like a series of set pieces with far less pace and flow of the original. Only only emotional moments are when the music kicks in and you know you are going to gun down some combine.
As for making them into movies. Production houses are already cutting and toning down scenes in order for them to recieve a lower rating, get more people through the door, and hence more profit. I think 'Saw' in one of the only recent films I have seen in the last 5 years ( in the horror genre) that is any good.

I'm a big fan of the "doom" games having grown up with them... but the movie looks like it's going to suck arse to be honest.
That trailer did nothing for me personally, and it looks like they're not sticking true to the "Doom" storyline, rather using some of the lower grade monsters from it as eye candy in some crappy made up plot.
Plus it's fronted by possibly the worst actor in history (The Rock, you just ahve to watch the scorpion king to know what i'm talking about), which means it's destined to flop.

tbh if the movie is style over substance then it will be a perfect copy of doom 3, whats the problem
doom 1 and 2 were great games, but 3 sucked, only a loyalty to the original games made me put up with yet another darkly lit level with yet more zombies/monsters/demons hidden away in a shadowed recess. After the initial wow factor it turned into a grind.
The real genius of id software with doom 3 wasnt the game itself but the way they convinced us we had something special when what we really had was mutton dressed like lamb.
To be fair to the movie it has to be sold to a lot more people than the game ever reached, i mean its not like there taking glengarry glen ross and turning it into a musical
I picked up this ace book today everyone rates it as a must buy for the budding military genius, tho ive decided to rename it as "Sun Tzu's art of the bloody obvious" |
