I'm still unclear about how to balance these things.
I notice that when I plug in a gun or a missile, it eats up my power in the grid. Can I keep adding as much as I can until it's full, or do I need to keep some power available? I assume I can buy some modules eventually to add power; are there skills that increase available power as well?
CPU: I guess I need to keep some CPU free to fire weapons and do other things - any recommended percentage that I should keep available?
I know this isn't too clear, but I'm sort of lost with all the fitting options. A nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Vynos

Power and CPU are two things that CCP uses to balance ships; they limit how big / how many things you can put on the ship. Power is generally used to limit weapons and defense, and CPU is generally used to limit electronics and mining lasers.
When you fit your ship, the idea is to fill both of these as much as possible.
The third thing that's really important for ships is the capacitor recharge rate. The capacitor recharge rate determines for how long you can keep things (shields, armor repair, guns) going, and it's critical for combat.

Like Brej said, powergrid and CPU have meaning only for fitting requirements, so use as much as you need.
To increase powergrid, train the Engineering skill. There are also other skills that have more limited effects like Advanced Weapon Upgrades and Shield Upgrades. For modules, there are Reactor Control Units, Power Diagnostic Systems, and Micro Auxiliary Power Cores.
To increase CPU, train Electronics. There are also more limited skills like Weapon Upgrades and Energy Grid Upgrades. The Coprocessor modules also increase CPU. |

Once everything is mounted, CPU and Powergrid usage does not change. What does change during flight however is your Energy, which is stored in the ship Capacitor (therefore commonly known as "cap"). It is represented by those yellow bits in the center of your HUD. If you don't have enough energy, your modules won't activate when you try to. Don't worry though, Energy keeps replenishing itself. CPU and Powergrid is just a limit for how many and how good modules you can fit to your ship, so it doesn't matter if you fill it to the top or just 50%. Stuffing 100% with modules on all slots is however a good measure for knowing when you've stuffed as much stuff to the ship as possible, as high end modules has higher requirements.

Is it possible for me to get 2 mining lasers on a bantam?
Ive tried, so I know as a newbie I cant do it. But can I train up enough +5% cpu and stuff until I can? Or will I get access to a larger ship before access to that kind of CPU/power upgrade?

I think you can, but you probably need Electronics to 4 (for +20% CPU) and/or possibly a Coprocessor instead of one of your cargo expanders.
For 2 Miner 2's that is. 2 Miner 1's, that's easier.

Yes, a newbie is going to be using Miner 2s. *beats Brej senseless with a halibut*
They did hit on a good point though. As a newbie, it's very advisable to train up Engineering and Electronics (the base skills) up to level 4 ASAP. It takes a little over three days total (assuming your Intelligence and Memory are "average" at 10), but +20% to CPU and Powergrid is absolutely crucial. Weapons Upgrades helps a lot too (lowers the CPU need of all turret weapons and launchers by 5% per level), but that takes a bit longer to train. Level 5 of Engy and Elecs helps too, obviously (25% more grid? Mmmm) but the last level of a skill takes a very long time to train up. Get to 4 and you'll be good for a while. -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?
