We have come up with a new solution for the mineral situation. We understand that there is a reason for CCP making the game the way it is now. However we think that it wasnt anticipated that it would result in the current lockdown. Large corporations are slowly tightening the grip on the regions that holds bistot or possibly ark, and soon only those few corporations will hold enough Megacyte to engage in any production of reasonable dimensions for medium or large sized corporations.
The natural lack of stations and not least offices at the few outer stations have made it more than hard for new or "late" corporations to ever gain a foothold in these regions, which is ok. It is supposed to be hard to get ones hand on the high level minerals. But the current situation is slowly deteriating the growth of every other corporations than the ones holding the keys to the outer regions, seriously furthering the increasing gap between corporations !
Now we could ask for a new change of the roid state but these changes always hurt someone. I dont think it was fair the first time and I think it would be nothing less than harassment of the larger corps that have put a lot of work into securing their own interests in the outer regions if the roid population is once again drastically changed.
So what can CCP do to better the terms for the rest of the EVE population?
This is one of many ideas our development team at JGR have come up with to help the devs and the population of EVE towards a better and more dynamic gameplay in an effective and not least easy way.
New Skill: Alchemy refinery Skill Description: Alchemist processing of ore. Primary att: Memory Secondary att: Intelligence Skill req: Refinery lvl 5
Advanced refiners use this skill to process minerals to the one at the level higher at a ratio of 4!
4 tritanium = 1 pyerite 4 pyerite = 1 mexallon 4 mexallon = 1 Isogen 4 Isogen = 1 nocxium 4 Nocxium = 1 zydrine 4 Zydrine = 1 megacyte
This seriously disrupt the black market of Megacyte which only few persons hold (price is up to 6-7k atm). That can and wil be argued to be part of the dynamics of the eve society but it is really just a few persons blocking and controlling the growth of many others. The implementation of this skill will enchance growth of all corporations in EVE and not really harm the production capability of those who secured all the Mega in the first place.
Also it can be argued that this favours the hard working miners! That is the first time in this game that hard work gets the upper hand to pirating and could be a major step towards achieving some balance between the ones on the "Dark path" and the "Workers".
To use alchemy on low level roids is still slower than mining it directly from bistot and ark. So its still in favor of real mining.
This skill is build upon the already implemented recycle funtion. Only here you recycle minerals to other minerals. Along with the needed skill book we believe it could be implemented very easily into the game!

Already the 4x's a mineral equals the value of the next mineral, so I can see where you are suggesting a buildup to the next mineral.
The benefit is also if you are carrying around minerals, the 1 mineral may be lighter to carry; haven't checked.
But are you suggesting only the primary refining of lvl5, and not needing the extra efficiency skill to use it?
What about when you get this new skill (Whatever the name you stated) to reach lvl2? Do you get another bonus? How much of a bonus for lvls 2-5? What type of learning is it, rank?
I wonder if this skill is already in the Eve game, but not yet released? Some kind of Science skill maybe?
Just some things to consider since you asked for replies. :-)

Thx for your reply. I think it should be build on top of either one of the refine skills.
There should be some wastage level which the skill training should reduce. Just like ordinary refining. If the skill would be build on top of the advanced refining it should at lvl 5 be almost as good as mining real mega as the training time would be more than substantial.
We have made calculations comparing the yield of trit from mining veldspar to the mining of Bistot and making mega through alchemy is slower than mining the real ore. And that is based on 0% waste level on the alchemy. So the waste level should be fully eliminated at lvl 5!
I am looking through my papers to find this calculation and will post it once I find it.

Putting it on top of the RE skill would work, imo - 30days to learn that to Lvl5.
Another good idea, imo.

It's a nice idea. However IMHO, for games to be interesting there has to be some kind of conflict in the deeper game scenarios. One of these is resource conflict.
The current game dynamics and resource allocation are fine. There is plenty of megacyte to be had at decent prices.
Players just need to start getting finding alternatives rather than asking for game rule changes. eg.
9) Find alternative suppliers of megacyte 8) Kill the overpriced traders 7) Undercut the buyers at their source 6) Go find another way to make money. 5) Raise the prices on the ships your selling 4) go travel and buy it somewhere else. 3) get loot that contains megacyte 2) Improve your refining skills 1) Go play 'snap' and ***** at the laws of probability when you can't work out how to win.

I agree Cell that conflicts over many issues is needed to make an interesting gameplay.
However it is my opinion that we are now entering a scenario where few corporations will sit on the regions containing the mega that we all need.
That could be seen as the way of the EVE world but the question is if this will make EVE a playable game.
For a conflict to arise there have to be people around to pick up the glove of those who have claimed the regions in question. And for this to happend there have to be at least some balance in the growth of corporations and their income.
The growth that the corporations holding the outer regions, and those who will evidently end up holding them, will no matter how angle I approach this subject have a much steeper evolution curve than any of the opposing corporations.
Also regarding changes to the rules, one should not forget that it was such changes in "rules" and the outline of EVE that brought us all in this situation. We have ideas of major changes that would even the situation as well, but since we didnt like it when we where the victims of such alteration we dont suggest such changes again. This skill is thought to be an addendum and to hopefully even the game for some, not setting back others.
9. Find alternative sources! Loot tables have changed, where we thought we could make enough mega from loot, the change in loot tables have made this an almost impossible task by now.
8. Kill the overpriced traders! Is that Sinister, Moo or Taggart you are talking about? Because I dont see that happend! Their growth is by far ahead of any lower organisations.
6. Go find another way to make money! Isk or minerals is both resources to be found to some extend. However I cant think of any way to make ISK OR mega that will even the rate of growth to the extend where the corporations going "another way" will ever be able to charge the ones holding the outer regions.
5. Raise the prices on shps your selling. Market is fubar! Who would buy an overpriced vessel?
2. Improve you refining skills Our refiners have refine level 9. (5+4)
1. Go play snap.... Lol. This one is quite funny. We have tried to position us in the world of EVE since tranq came out, but the constant and fundamental change keeps setting us back, wasting our effort in figuring out the game. Is a loong story, let me only say that we would be on top of everything if they had not changed the rules again and again.
Cell I think you have a good reason in your suggestions. However I think you lack the perspective of where it is goin. Our economists evaluation of the situation is that the rich and well positioned corporations have a steeper growth curve than the rest of EVE. This curve keeps on furthering faster than others.
Some funny parallels to consider:
Monopolly. You hold as many squares as your opponent. But he holds all the best ones. Simple statistics - He will win! Because his growth curve outmatches yours and will keep on growing faster than yours.
Look at this like Command & conquer. 8 factions placed in an X with 1 in each corner and 4 in the middle. Resources in the corners are same as in the middle. There IS four factions in the middle of the X, so why dont they just take over one of the single corner factions? Because they share the same resources as each of the corner factions on a whole and these resources divided isnt as strong as the corner factions. Not even if the four middle factions joins up will they be as strong because of the waste they spill on buying same structures. And in EVE I dont even think the amount of resources in the middle is quite similar to the corner ones!
Let me end my reply with the following. Consider that we had more than enough ressources for all in EVE. Hard work would equal the needed requirements to build up an armada. That would be a nice battle and an ongoing battle to win territory. Not just a few intimidating the rest from acting.
And a war requires huge amounts of specific resources. Who can risk a war with an enemy that rearms faster and cheaper than you? Its not wise IMO!
I look forward to you reply Cell.

While at it, why not add a Horadric Cube;
3 veldspar rocks and a weapon = best upgraded version of it,
1 Warp Stabilizer and a Corpse and you get a stargate to the Secret M0o Level with hundreds of Lord Zaps all coming after you.
Etc...
oh, seriously now, I dont think transmuting minerals to the next version is that good an idea. If that's the case all minerals become exactly the same value, which completely defeats the point of the mineral/ore distributions and having to move out to actually get the rarer ores.

Edited by: Shandri on 21/07/2003 18:32:45 This is a really stupid idea, there are many different resources for a reason.
p.s. Why Alchemy (the Middle-Ages attempt at making gold from lesser metals), why not call it chemistry?
And why would you want such a skill?
p.p.s. Also, if they did make it, it might be worth it just to see how many people spend their time on such a worthless skill.
You canŠt take 100kgs of Iron and turn it into 25kg of plutonium. Conceivably, you could use a particle accelerator to convert a small fraction of an element into the one above it in the table of elements, but the efficiency would be so dismal, and the cost so high, that even if we assume that the people in the world of EVE have a somewhat better handle of this than us, the cost involved would be FAR too high for it to be profitable.

The idea isn't bad.
After all, if you want to have conflicts, you are going to have fights, but things will get destroyed. Then you have a tricky situation.
If the fights were over resources in the first place, then odds are, it will take a very long time for those without the resources to build up enough of a force to try again.
So it ends up going around in a circle.
Resources are the win-situation in any game, but without them to build the raising of forces to take back resources is hard...
Like the idea, and as someone else already said. You won't see a person from the corps controlling the mega-fields suggesting an idea like this. :)

There is nothing wrong with the idea, up to a point (fusion could create higher elements from lower and generate energy, but only up to iron, I think, in the periodic table). However, is there a problem yet? I haven't begun to explore the Eve universe, Jove space is yet to open up. Do the big corps have a strangle hold?
Even should they develope such a hold, would the GM's allow it to remain in place? Spawn points can change and asteroid fields become mined out (if necessary).
Also, as I understand it, there is a fixed amount of each mineral in the eve universe (this suggestion would change that. Trit could become very expensive!). In which case, once it has been sold as a ship, it will not come back until some ships are destroyed. It almost makes one believe the allegation that some big legit corps and pirates might be hand in glove!

I think you have missed the way in which the market (with CCP's help) has been set to run for minerals.
Currently in many areas there are fixed system orders for Tri and Pye, due to their size there is no real way for a region to run out of such orders during a playing day, so they have been set by CCP to control the market in the following way.
With tri and pye always paying a base price the rest of the general minerals are no longer prices at Mex 16, Iso 64, Nox 256, instead we have a basic supply and demand process, were the upper limit is set by the buyers and the lower limit is set by the fact if they sell at to low a price, miners just start to focus on mining sco, that is then refined and sold to the market. This means I'm seeing mex between 11-16, Iso 56-64 and nox 200-256.
As for Zyd and Meg, these were pure supply and demaind, but due to raid problems at the moment meg prices are now heading for 10K+.
You proposal, while being nice for producers/refiners just removed a major dynamic of the game, with the figures you put forward there would be little need for any ores other than sco and maybe Hed to be mined as all other minerals could then be produced!.
Now if you changed the ratios so that the skill becomes a way to create zyd and meg but in a way that creates a high upper price for these minerals (say 8K for meg) such a skill could be usefull in controling market changes (such as the one we see at the moment).
As to the "black market of Megacyte" thats not true and every producer (who can add up) is using the same 'market price when they work out the cost of building something. Just because a corp is larger enough to mine Meg does not mean that they can value it at 1sk when pricing up their ships.

Nice idea.... i'm wondering....if you could change any mineral into any other mineral type surely you'd end up with 1m trit making 100 mega (maths not my good point) this then means that corps can sit and mine in safe zones mining veld or scor and just turning them into whatever minerals they need at a cost. Surely this makes the different asteroid types redundant and looking for rich ore systems pointless. I understand the point that big corps are accelerating away from the rest of the pack but don't big corps always do this, in real life, monopolies, price fixing etc.... I like this element of EVE, it's unfair, business usually is, so you must be content with your lot or figure out some way to oust the big corps from rich ore systems - maybe get together with some other like minded smaller corps - maybe form a Cartel - strike up a trading relationship with the less aggressive megacorps. I think it's all academic anyway - i'm sure a patch will change the dynamic of the game once more......adapt and survive.....annoying but it is the way of EVE....it would seem |

However I think that it with the current scheme is closing in on this being a miner game for 6/8 of the players. Some people think its almost like a new 2nd job. Get of your RL job to get on your other one: EVE - The second Job :)
I tend to think that easier production would get strategics and corp wars over territories into gear much faster! Harder production would just make the game even more boring than it is now. -----------------Balance-------------------- Easy Production-----|------Harder production More equipment-----|------Less equipment More wars-----------|------Less wars
And just for "fun" imagine that Oil was only to be found in US. Would that make world politics that much fun for the rest of the world? Should they attack the US to get their oil or look into other powersources that could equal the "game"?
Its all a matter of politics :)

Oh and shandri. Its called nanotechnology!
Disassemble stuff into atoms. And then assembling these atoms into whatever stuff you want. It doesnt matter what you take the atomic particles from. And also the structure of Higher minerals is not necessarily more complex than lighter ones. Remember it all consists of the same particles, whichever you choose to believe that is.
Nanotechnology is already known at a low level today! But is still believed to be much too energy consuming to be reasonable. BUT when did you put fuel on your ship? I guess we in EVE have better power sources than in RL

It very much seems at the holder of the monopolized megacyte have tightened the grip on the mega supply. As Miko earlier stated both market of megacyte would soon become depleted. That is what we see now. No WTS on the trade channel anymore!

a. Change roid state
b. Implement something new like the "alchemy skill" to open up the game.

I really don't like the idea at all because it makes it too simple to get mega. If you follow the formula you suggested, one such person could make a megacyte out of 4096 trit-- and we all know how easy it is to get tritanium. There would be such an overflow of megacyte that the prices would plummet and ships would be built like crazy and stockpiled but not destroyed. Not to mention, there would be absolutely no reason for anyone to go mining in low sec because they could mine everything they need in 1.0 space (trit which can keep building up into every other mineral in the game) ______________

However, IMO rare mega equals rare equipment. This game is too much about the hurdle to make things and too little about using it for the fun stuff like war and such
You really think that there would be no wars if there was more mega and it was more widespread in the universe? You obviously didnt play beta that much
A whole new line of strategics and territory claiming would then see the light of day.
A single system could be the fort of one corporation. It would evidently make it much more clan based, like in medieval days (which in my opinion wasnt the friendliest of days in history!).
As a reply to Sara I would like to say that there would ALWAYS be people venturing into new space. Originally this was a task for the bold that wanted to claim uncharted territory. Want your own system - go farther out in the universe. Currently medium sized corps are trapped in the MIDDLE of the universe. IMO this makes no sense! The middle should be center of all trade and be where the large corps should hold a tight grip. Smaller corporations would then have to move away from the Center of trade in order to get a foothold. The whole eve Universe is reversed from the natural urbanisational evolution of a society.
EVE history have already moved to the plateau of lockdown that is the current state of the real world politics.
Remember that United States was, before they became a super power, uncharted land that was explored and colonized and not by kings and queens only.
The outer regions should be the land of the free, not the borders that surrounds us and limits us.

I kinna like the idea as well. But rather than have the amounts more or less equal in value, have it more costly to do it this way. So like for instance, it will take about 4-8 zyd to make one single unit of mega. So this gives the option to do it this way, but still gives the mining mega corps out there a way to still keep their holding and possibly make profit or whatever.

406400 tritanium to make 100mega, pretty fair exchange but that is after a month or so of training teh skill, and thats after a month or so after training refinery skills too....by that time its worth it, i would like this implemented but i would expect low level "alchemy" to include high wastage factors.
transforming 400k+ trit into 100mega, excellent, now mine another load of scor to replace the trit that EVERY component in the eve manufacturing universe requires....one thing were always short of in manufacturing is damned tritanium anyway so sacrifinc tritanium wouldnt be my highest priority :/

It seems to me that you have no idea what youŠre talking about. Nanobots are far too big to move around neutrons and protons within an atom. Even Pikobots would be too big for that.
Now, moving around atoms to make different molecules, maybe in the far future, but thats not what weŠre talking about.

Edited by: JGR Miko on 27/07/2003 22:03:56 Uhm... I agree that Nano technology is in the very distant future from where we are in real life.
It took 200 years to build the gate to "New Eden" ~ 2203
"For thousands of years, these scattered human enclaves lived and grew in isolation from each other. As time passed, their different environmental conditions wrought small changes to their physical appearance, making each distinct from its neighbours"
Thousands - is minimum 2000 years
If we only look at the years stated in EVE history, we are now in the year 4203. I sincerely hope we have the knowledge in year 4000+ to do something similar to this!
Now theory wise I know that this might involve nanotechnology on a higher level than the goals we have today, but I seriously dont doubt that we will at some point in the human history have the ability to interchange the nuclues composition of an atom as well! I agree that we might have to change our view of the structure of the atomic composition as well. I know this involves looking at this with a scope even more close than nanometres but that should not be impossible in the year 4000 I think. Quantum physics should at this day and age be much less theorized and much more "hands on" practical than it is today.

Edited by: JGR Miko on 27/07/2003 21:53:08 Ok this is my thoughts on the science in this, no real relation to the skill but here goes: (please note that English is not my primary language so I might mix up some words and terms)
If we look at the atom. The nucleus and the electrons is considered the building stones. Now if we disregard quark physics this is the three building stones of all atoms.
Now each of these components are found in almost all atoms. (One exception that I come to think of is Hydrogen which lacks neutrons)
So if I was to disassemble electrons, neutrons and protons, I could then put them together making any kind of atom that I would want to! (Or why not just build the nucleus from up quarks and down quarks)
Like this: Carbon12 atom consist of 6 electrons, 6 protons and 6 neutrons. Now lets shake up that nanomachine over there and make some plutonium. Not the real danger kind, lets just make some standard Pu244 (and plz disregard the fact that it would be easier to make Pu239 from U238) Plutonium 244 is 94 Electrons, 94 protons and 150 neutrons Ill put 25 carbon atoms into my nanomachine and shake out the 150 neutrons, protons and electrons. No ionisation or photonic loss, because im that good I will use the the last 56 Electrons and protons to make some water because all of this nano work have made me thirsty. Hmm water is H2O and takes roughly 10 electrons, 2 protons and 8 neutrons to make but darn im outta neutrons. Now what can I do. I go to the daughters room and takes her quark machine. With that I split 48 of the protons into 96 up quarks and 48 down ones. I then use that to assemble 24 neutrons from 48 down quarks and 24 up quarks. From 6 protons, 24 neutrons and 30 electrons i make 3 molecules of water. I now have plutonium and water lying on my desk and hands the remaining 26 electrons, 2 protons and 72 up quarks to my daughter. She will later take it to the mall and use the nanoassembly candy machine for her sweet tooth. She will of course have to get some more down quarks but the neighbours daughter just got some from her uncle as a present so they could team up if theyr smart.
Sounds easy - but its not.
First of all we need to learn more about elementary "particles" than we do today. They are considered to be energy states or points and we dont have a clear understanding to this yet. So we need to discover this some more.
Secondly we would serously need to know how to control what I think is generally called the "strong nuclear force" and is what holds the stuff together or apart. (Its one of the four "known" elemental forces and is simplified an electromagnetic force! Another one is gravity! this is important but I come back to this)
Probably some more problems too, but let the 4203 year physicist worry bout that.
Now why should this be possible in eve on a scientific level: Beside the fact that we are in the quite distant future I will relate my answer to a well known technology in eve.
Jump gates uses wormhole technology which is basically the understanding and manipulation of gravimetric fields. If we can control the gravimetric force good enough to open up a wormhole and travel through it why shouldnt we be able to control the "strong nuclear force" to disassemble and reconstruct atoms as well. Reversing gravity or neutralizing it is farther from todays scientific level than nanotechnology on any level is in my opinion.
After all, NASA is still racing up and down in a plane to have their new space pilots encounter zero gravity conditions. |

alchemy is simple, it can be achieved by reaching another goal = cold fusion. Until you can achieve that, good luck manipulating atoms.

Well that too would be a way. But since The US Department of Energy has predicted that we should see a (partial) breakthrough in that field within the next 4-5 decades. It should be somewhat reality in the year of 4000 I would think. IF we choose to believe them.
