After reading a bunch of topics here, I feel compelled to respond to a general theme: "getting PK'ed is no fun".
Yup, that's true. Neither is getting scored-on in a hockey/basketball/whatever. But you don't quit, you take the ball yourself and keep playing. Likewise in Eve: complain and rant about it on your favorite chat channel, stop playing and sulk for awhile if you want, but for crying out loud it's just some pixels on the screen!

Nobody here is quitting because other people have more money, Better equipment and are able to buy a battleship when all they can afford is a cruiser. That is the analagy for being out scored. But when Bullys can stand on the street corner and take your Bat, Ball and favorite glove, you going to think about taking up a different sport.

Wargames said it best. "Strange game. Only winning move is, not to play."
Perfectly describes PK systems where you can loose days, weeks, months, of work in seconds.
PKs always want people to zerg.
Wargames has it right sometimes, period.

People are quitting because EVE is BORING. That's the main reason why. Boring and broken.

I still find EVE very interesting, but have thought about just quitting & selling the game for one reason, and one reason only - PKs.
Now I am not against PKing completely. However, when I get PK'd on a daily basis, lose all the hard work I have put into the game and know that there is no way to PK the PK'ers, what is the point?
Personally, I think that given the difficulty of building and the disasterous nature of losing them, all stargates should be guarded - at least by senry guns. But, that is my opinion.
As to an analogy - I played a game with a friend of mine in which my character died every time we gamed. I soon found excuses for no going to his games anymore. It is not much fun to be stuck somewhere, nor to be killed most everytime you play, with no chance of avoiding it (unless you stick to 1.0 Security Sectors). If I want to die all the time, I'll play Pac-Man.

Since this game was hyped as being a PvP game from the start, you should have expected that you could get killed playing. And if you thought there werent going to be buttheads out there who would simply wipe you off the face of the galaxy without a word, and without giving you a chance, then you have too much faith in the human race.
As for getting PKed, its idiot simple to avoid. If you look at your map, keep an eye on local, use scouts when traveling in groups, and are ready to instantly warp to a safe location, you can pretty much go anywhere without getting PKed. +++
It's called "low security space" for a reason. |

kashre;
what i think is that CCP underestimated the utter lameness and griefing that they attracted with claiming a full PvP game.becouse it isnt about roleplaying...its about griefing and killing people for no reason at all

Killed on a daily basis? Whoa, try being a little more careful. I've lost a single ship in 2 months time - a frigate. Yet I've been to almost all regions between Venal and Stain. |

Ok, I know people quit the game because they're bored. Bully for them - that's just smart.
But why all this whining about get killed? You lost, the other guy won. Fair & Square or dirty, it shouldn't matter. Just pick yourself up, utter some choice cusswords (whatever it takes to vent for you), and get back to business.

People aren't quitting, newbs. The number of people playing goes up on a weekly basis.
Get it through your stupid, stubborn, idiotic heads.
No one is quitting but a bunch of worthless forum whiners.

Ya know Hawk, its funny you should talk about PKing considering your corp was one of the first to try to podkill us after we shook down a Borg indy for 100k isk. Funny thing was, it was a dumped egg outside of station. You should have seen your corp mate crowing about how we got what we deserved when the 'podkilled' pirate was 5 jumps out.

If I was to get Pk'd there is only one person I would whine at.
ME.
Because it would have been my fault.
I often travel into none Empire space. But before I make a single jump I check my map.
I look for how many players are in a system, how many ships have been destroyed, how many pods have been destroyed.
Pirates have one big disadvantage, they have a huge finger pointing out exactly where they are working, so if I am fool enough to blindly jump into the same location as them, then I am the only one to be blamed.
At one time I was staunchly anti pirate, anti PK'er. But now the pirates have been pushed out of Empire space, yet idiots still rush blindly onto their guns, then they ***** like hell when they loose their ships.
Remember the words of Mr Myagi. "The best way to avoid a punch. Is not to be there in the first place."

If the graphs at eve-i.com show fewer people logging in each week, what do you think those people that stop logging in are going to do? Keep paying CCP out of the generosity of their hearts?

Mattathias: While a noble sentiment you have to acknowledge something about some members of this playerbase:
They refuse to believe that there is any competition involved in playing Eve.
Don't look astonished. I'm serious. They will tell you there is no winning or losing here. That they're not in competition with anyone else. That a RPG is solely about seeing how much you can improve your character and participating in a vast storyline.
How they miss the fact that almost everything revolves around some type of competition is beyond me. How they can miss that manufacturers compete with each other for a larger market share. How corporations compete with each other to become the richess, most prestigious or most powerful. How, regardless of whatever reason for it, combat is about competing against another person to win.
It's not the entire focus of the game. But it is a core component. As those competitions are the motivating factors to do anything in this game. The solo miner may not be in direct competition with someone else. But he is contributing to someone's competition with another person. And while he may not want to be, he is involved in the competition as well. People compete over how much they can influence him.
So those people who persist in deluding themselves will as soon as the fact there are several competitions going on is forced into their consciouness. That comes when they lose. And then they realize: the only way they can lose is if they were completely wrong about there not being a competition.
For some people currently playing Eve, a game like A Tale in the Desert would be far more suited for them.

Jash said it best.
I'd love to know how people can see numbers going down and still say they are going up. I'm not a programmer but I would like someone to do a detailed study over a weeks time on the numbers generated from Eve-I's online status. Maybe in increments of a half hour or so for a week. All that gets talked about is the PEEK numbers online and how that calculates into some playerbase. I currently spend more of my time, other then the weekend, online at 12:00 am EST. The server count is less then 3000. At 5:30 its around 2000. So it would be interesting to see an average over 24 hours then over the course of a week. Sunday has historically been the highest day followed by I think Monday. Then it slides through the week.
