While fighting a bunch of plunderers in my Osprey I notice the following happens:
Bad guy at 10km or so...
2005.08.01 16:23:01combatYour Scourge Heavy Missile I hits Guristas Plunderer, doing 46.6 damage.
Repeatable. Obviously missiles not doing much good even with new skills trained etc.
Yet as I move away from the _same_ baddie, it staying on the same course, traveling a consistent 199m/s I get to approx 18k and this starts to happen
2005.08.01 16:24:49combatYour Scourge Heavy Missile I hits Guristas Plunderer, doing 113.6 damage.
Consistently. As soon as the bad guys get even further away I start to hit them for:
2005.08.01 16:29:08combatYour Scourge Heavy Missile I hits Guristas Plunderer, doing 168.1 damage.
Again - same flying profile from the plunderer.
So - does the new missile nerf care about the distance the bad guys are? It _seems_ the same fighting frigs too but only noticed majorly since flying a single missile ship.

Buhu. Now missiles can't do the exact same damage regardless of range. Like turret users.

I didn't interpret the original post as a whine - merely as a question.
I find it strange that range would have an effect on missile damage. If NPCs activate afterburners or MWDs, they would get a larger signature radius which would account for more missile damage, but range? That sounds like a bug to me.
Maybe ask in the "Ships and Modules" forum instead. I think it is more suitable for this type of discussion.

Read the whole thing before yo make yourself look like an idiot.
@ the original poster: im pretty sure that the speed of the missiles affects the dmg they do.
The farther away your target is, the more damage they do as they are going faster due to acceleration.

lol - that really makes missiles a longer range affair then; although I don't want to switch to guns (I don't like guns) I guess I'm being forced down that route for <20km range...
BTW - do we know if your description is accurate? It sounds pretty good anyway :)
Thanks

Missiles now do damage based upon signature radius of the targeted ship at the point of impact. So, if anything happens to change that sig radius, the dmg of the missile will change accordingly. For instance: microwarp drive initation, target painting.

I did some pretty extensive testing with belt rats on my own once I had my missile skills trained to IV. At first I noticed the same thing Zakgram did with it being apparent that somehow more damage being done by missiles when the target in question was at a greater range.
At first I couldn't explain the behavior and I thought perhaps CCP had tossed in some sort of distance factor in addition to sig/velocity. However, further experimentation revealed that the rats in question had activated their afterburners in an attempt to chase me down because they were at a distance greater than their optimal range.
So yes, I was hitting and doing more damage when they were further out but only because the AI had decided to use its afterburners to try and catch up me - giving them a nice big sig radius penalty.
Also, in my testing (for belt rats at least) the damage reduction due to the velocity of the ship is negligible compared to sig radius damage reduction.

ok so, a nuke explosion would do more damage 'eh? :p i can see this making sense for a kinetic missile... but not the others ;)

I thought only MwD gave a sig radius penalty rather than afterburners?

Double-checked and you're right. But I saw damage increased at range for both obviously mwd rats (ie: cruise at 150m/s and suddelny jump to 600-700m/s) and rats that appeared to be using some sort of afterburner because they were travelling faster than normal (ie: normally cruised at 150-200m/s but chased at 250 m/s) but not nearly fast enough to be a mwd rat.

Plus I'm pretty sure rats don't suffer MWD sig radius penalty. When cruisers MWD towards me, I hit them with less frequency (due to greater transverse), not greater.

i'm pretty sure mwd gives the a bigger sig , my large beams tend to hit better when they come towards me at 2000+m/s

Edited by: Zyrla Bladestorm on 03/08/2005 20:19:19 NPC's got the MWD sig penalty with the last patch.
NPC MWD speed boost isn't a flat +500% like player ones - it is whatever the dev responsible set it to.
Edit : whatever speed they set it to rather, its not a % boost at all. (ie ogre heavy drones show 700 speed - but that is there MWD speed I believe, cruising speed would be more like 150) . ----- Apologys for any rambling that may have just occurred.

Edited by: Vishnej on 03/08/2005 21:19:35 Also, it isn't going to give you a flat +500% damage boost on heavy missiles - the boost is capped at the influence of the explosion radius, which differs by rat.
