How is that hypocrisy? We don't have R or AO ratings here for games. So pretty much any sexual content gets you the banzor.
* theRaptor goes and downloads GTA:SA and "Hot coffee" just to see what the fuss is about.

Hypocrisy X rated movies - I think they are legal in Australia, have no real idea as I don't live there. R rated movies containing graphic scenes of violence - Legal R rated movies containing almost x rated scenes. - Legal Movies containing drug use, general violence - legal Media containing profanity - legal
Buried video game code that ultimately shows pixelated clothed avatars doing some weird ass moves to be construed as a sexual act - not legal.
Not picking on Australia, but basically was saying glad to see stupidity not contained to North America.

While I dislike censure (because, when you start to use it in justified cases, there'll always be more pressures to use it in cases where it's not justified), I think that GTA more than had it coming.
Wat's the point of the Hot Coffee mode? it's not to add fun to this game, it's to provoke a polemic. Simply that. The more GTA is mentionned, in newspapers and others, in good or in bad, the more it's sold. Since GTA2, the developping team used that trick (is hitting prostitutes supposed to be fun?) to inflate the reputation of the game behond what it's realy worth, it's time they get hammered for it...

This really worries me. not so much for games making market.
I fear for the mod comunity. if this type of thing keeps happening dev's will stop providing mod tool's and start putting measures to prevent modding full stop in.

Bottom line: a game shouldn't be banned for content that's only viewable by applying a mod or patch that doesn't come from the publishers/developers.
Imagine if someone with a grudge against EA decided to get the Sims banned by writing an X-rated mod for it and putting it out on the... hey, now wait a minute...

Re:Mods being removed. Yep...worries me as well. Lots of life left in the old titles due to the work of the creators of mods. I hope this doesn't scare publishers from including the toolsets anymore.

Although an unpopular opinion, I think some censorship is needed in every society. GTA shouldn't have been shipped with that content in it, locked or not. They are now in the process of re-releasing it without it, as aside from Australia's reaction many, many stores and chains in north america refuse to carry it now that they've heard about hot coffee.
I don't have any problem with "adult" games or whatever, but the markets shouldn't be mixed. GTA's target audience is, for the most part, not old enough to go see restricted movies in a theatre, at least not in North America....

Most people would accept that. Or are we really going to defend publishing the formulae for lethal and easily-made nerve gases on the Internet?
The problem - as in so many walks of life - is that the law operates on a yes/no, black/white basis. Something's legal, or it isn't. The real world just isn't like that: everything's a shade of grey, and often it's hard to tell whether one thing's a lighter grey than another.

If its target audience is kids why does it come with the 18+ rating on it? It is not the fault of "rock star" that retailers sell the game to kids or that stupid parents buy the game for kids. I donĘt want my entertainment watered down for your kids.

Just a heads up Gift. I think as it pertains to Australia, as the one fellow above said, they don't have a rating system for video games hence the complete removal of the entire line.
Although, all this publicity, how many people have actually now gone out to see what the fuss about? Almost like being the Madonna of the video game world.

As much as i like gta personaly, end of the day, it's pure filth reguardless of personal opinion.
Anything like this that comes the games way.. well how can anyone complain tbh.
Im over 30, i can see the difference between x and x.. people younger and more impressionable might take serious direction from the game, you might not think it.. but it happens
For me it's got nada to do with the hot coffee mod or anything, it's just the game in general, game makes violence seem real cool....
It's not realy, and like i say, while i enjoy it for what it is.. that might not be the case for everybody, don't underestimate, people get seriously strung up on this type of s*** -------- 23 |

I find it extremely hard to believe that any "normal" kid could take GTA as a serious "direction". That said...
If (IF!) some kid(s) do take direction from GTA, its not the fault of the game anymore than its the fault of some violent movie they saw, or even the 6 o'clock news (easily the most violent images to be found on TV).
Wanna know whos fault it is? The damn kids.
Why is personal responsibility such a hard concept for the media et al to grasp. If a kid picks up a gun and shoots people, its not because of some game/movie/external force, its a choice that kid made. Even with the worst parents in the world, playing the most disgusting games, watching violence and sex on TV, doesn't remove the persons ability to chose not to shoot people.
Get rid of this special attitude towards juveniles and if/when they commit serious crimes, treat them the same as anyone else. They're fully aware of what they're doing, even at younger ages, and no some ebil game didn't cause them to do something.
Hope that doesn't offend anyone, but I feel pretty strongly on this sort of stuff

Effects of media upon youth is one argument, but my entire issue is to say other more extreme venues of entertainment are out there that have basic "labels" on them and are perfectly legal, but when it comes to a video game, "the horror" and then comes the heavy fist of banning.
There is a segment of the parent population out there who blame their child's behaviour on everything else other than their own parenting. The current grandmother lawsuit is the prime example. The suit contends she was unaware of the potential to unlock a mini sex game, but the killing of police, gangsters, and other undesirables in truly graphic fashion is less harmful then sex? As many have said, everything else happens in GTA, but God forbid clothed risque behaviour and now a lawsuit?
I do agree GTA is a morally reprehensive game, but it is my decision to go out there and buy the bloody thing. And to be honest, to shake off the constraints of daily behaviour to become an "anti hero" for a short period is fun for me. After the game goes off, CJ turns back into normal responsible human who still gives his wife a peck on the cheek before bed and is currently sitting at his office computer waiting to start another work day.
As Farimear said, what's going to happen to the mod community and developers after this shakes out? Will the toolkits be removed? Will modders have to sign some form of electronic 2543 page hold harmless document for developers before new mods can be released? Will RPG games like NWN stop producing mod toolkits which I think was one of its main selling features?
Anyways, I will step off the soapbox. However, I can't wait for the conservative/liberal pendulum starts to shift back, at least here in North America.

Instead of banning everything that is fun to protect kids with braindead parents, just ban kids. Much easier.
Another solution is to raise the avererage IQ of the world population. But that would require a satalite with mutating deathrays, and as side effect everyone would have the ability to shoot lasers with their eyes. ( Nerf the laz0rs ffs ! )

The only reason Rockstar is in trouble is that they lied about the existence of the code in the game and tried to shift blame to the modding community. If they had just come out and been upfront, told everyone that no one was ever supposed to see it and they couldn't remove it before print for whatever reason it the heat would have dissapated much quicker and congress would have minded their own damn business. But no, they lied, blamed it on modders, and firmly planted their tushies in the fire. Way to go rockstar! I love the GTA games, but c'mon.
That's the worst of it I fear, politicians sticking their noses into games as if they understand them, the people that play them, or the economics that drive them. So it's likely the result will be anything but good.
Additionally: any parent, group, etc.. that at this point and time cries foul at the content of a GTA games needs to be smacked with a halibut. The series has been out how long, with supreme moral, not to mention condescending and arrogant, outrage at every turn of a new game? If they didn't know what the series was about by now, then they really need to pay attention.
Unfortunately, paying attention is what most of these ultra sensative "how Dare They!" types rarely do, otherwise how'd lil jimmy get GTA? Or the guns and pipe bombs? Or the drugs? Man we need to hire that lil jimmy for the cia cause he's a slippery fish he is. And the argument that "insert game/music/yadda" made me do it is nothing more than someone trying to excuse horrid behavior, but what's more disgusting is the idiots that buy the excuse and shreek that it's not the persons fault and try to sue/ban/censor the item used as an excuse instead of locking up the evil little jerk who commited the crimes and punishing the parents for outright negligence.
Now before anyone stands up with the parents work routine, so freaking what?! I had two parents that worked and I couldn't pull jack **** because they knew I was a little demon. They asked questions, and paid attention like they were supposed to, they actually raised me and taught me right from wrong instead of hopeing sitcoms, cartoons, and the government would do it. When I was invariably caught I was spanked, grounded, worked, etc... you know discipline. Another thing many parents can't seem to be bothered with. My parents, believed teachers if they told them i was goofing off in class instead of threatening them. They beleives the adults as opposed to the kid who would readily lie to avoid consequences as 99.9% of all kids do. Now, everyones kids is a freaking angel, incapable of lipping off, bullying, or behaving badly, and it's always such a surprise when the truth comes out. Gah, i'm ranting.... sorry. It's just time for people to be personally responsible for a change and stop blaming everything else for thier woes or behavior.

ummm am i the only one who read the article and saw this?: Quote: The classification board in October 2004 gave the game a MA15+ rating, meaning it could be sold only to people aged over age 15, and warned that it contained "medium level animated violence, medium level coarse language."
note the paret about medium violence and language, was there a time when they werent cussing? This game puts scarface to shame! And i love it
but anyway according to that they seem to have a rating system, and even if they dont maybe they should add one? ---------------

However bad GTA might be no one is forcing anyone to play it, no one is forcing parents to buy it for their kids. I don't understand where governments get off telling me what I can and can't watch or play in my free time.
Then again I can understand why it happens, old people in office who don't know how to fix the real problems so they settle for 'just doing something'.
The world would be so much simpler if we stopped basing our common laws on the most extreme cases...
