Hey guys.
So recently I've been wondering about how to take a POS out. I'm currently on my way to getting a dreadnought to be stationed in a system, to take it out. However, I do not know "that" much about capitals and that is one of the reasons as to why I am asking for some advice. How much can a dreadnought withstand from the POS in siege mode? How much does it cost to put a dreadnought in siege? I was also wondering about how many, and what types of ships I should have in my fleet, as supporting cover, as I know the dreadnought would be a sitting duck if I didn't have a supporting fleet. Any help would be much appreciated! |

The very fact that you are asking these questions, means either
A) you are trying to bait someone into attacking your toy. Or B) You have no business flying a Dread....

I'll try to be helpful and assume this is not bait or a troll:
You've just advertised your intent to drop a dread, so now you've got ten or twenty corps all watching you and trying to figure out where this newbie guy is going to do it. You're going to get counter-dropped.
Do you intend to use the dread to ref (reinforce) the POS, or destroy it when it exits reinforced?
Depending on the size of the POS, you may not even need a dread. A battleship fleet would be far more defensible and flexible, though will take longer to get the job done. They will work fine against small and medium towers, dreads are overkill. For a large tower, yes you can use a dread to speed up the job, but bring a fleet anyways to defend it. Keep carriers on standby, if you have them, or expect to lose the dread anyways.
As always, everything you put on the field should be considered a total loss, even if you expect to win. Never expect to win.
Depending on the type of dread you intend to drop, and the skills of the pilot, fitting of the dread...etc... it should be able to manage anywhere from 5-20 thousand HP/s (that's your tank) while sieged, low end of the spectrum. Your biggest threat is not the POS you're attacking. It's going to be counter-drops.
More help to be provided by others in the thread, presumably. Shosho Katrina Oniseki ~ (RDC) Diplomat ~ [I-RED] Sub-Director of Public Relations |

Haha, if you find a page on the interenet answering all these questions let me know! As I have been looking all over the internet, but only finding what type of fuel the dread takes, but nothing about what supporting ships I should have, tactics, or how much the siege mode costs to run :P So I came here as a last resort lol |

The costs to jump and siege are dependent on the skills of the pilot. Ask the pilot who's going to fly it. They should already be aware of how much the deployment will cost. If they are not, find someone else to fly it, because that pilot should not be in a dread at all.
Supporting ships depend on what you expect to fight, and what your pilots are good at or capable of. Ideally, you should have more than one dread, carriers on standby, and a full separate subcap fleet to defend it. Maybe Armor BS or HACs. I won't speculate more on what's best here, since I don't know your situation.
Tactics are simple enough. If you've got a large enough fleet, and enough support... you should prepare for a fight. You should already know how to PvP by now anyways, so hopefully you don't need me to tell you how to fight. If you don't have enough support, you should be planning to get the **** out as soon as possible. Set your siege module to "red" after you siege the dread so it doesn't automatically start a new cycle. Get a cyno in position to jump the dread out if things get hairy. Bring enough support to destroy any interdictors and bubbles that might go up.
Insure the dread anyways. You're still probably going to lose it. Shosho Katrina Oniseki ~ (RDC) Diplomat ~ [I-RED] Sub-Director of Public Relations |

Any help would be much appreciated! Attacking a POS isn't meant to be a solo activity. You *could* pull it off solo if the POS had no offensive weaponry of any kind and the owner didn't care. Other than that, it's practically impossible to kill it solo.
If you want this thing dead, bigger ships aren't necessarily the answer. Large numbers of players are what typically do it. The more players are shooting the POS, the faster it dies. Heavier weapons means the POS dies even faster.
Typically you'll have a fleet of players come in to incapacitate the guns and POS offensive modules. Then you have your main fleet come in to start firing on the POS itself. That is the time for Dreads to step in. After offensive mods are down, not before.
Then you'll need several players acting as scouts in neighboring systems and possibly a little further out. Their job is not to engage hostiles but to report back if a hostile fleet is heading their way.
Assuming all is going well, when the POS reaches 25% shields it goes into Reinforcement Mode. It makes it so nobody can target the POS and this mode lasts for as long as 36 hours (depending on how much stront the POS owner put into the thing). Your PvP fleet then goes home and waits for the timer to wind down.
This gives the POS owner ample time to assemble a defense fleet and prepare for the return of your PvP fleet
Once the timer on the POS is complete, your PvP fleet returns and repeats the entire process listed above again, taking extra precautions because the POS owner knows when you'll return to finish the job. There's a very high likelihood that a significant fight will break out at the POS.
That is what you're going up against. You can't just warp in with a single dread and take out a POS on your own. Trolling is like art. Anyone can finger paint, but it takes true talent to create a masterpiece. |

If PVP isn't fun, then what is the point of it? I've attacked a POS before, (long time ago) and it was pretty fun, although the CEO logged on and threatened us with a fleet of 60 ships lol, but isn't that the fun in it? Who cares if you lose :P |

Its just strange that you have a dread at your disposal and no idea how to use it, or even how to take out a POS.
Your cap pilot isn't by chance named Sciron is he?

Oh no no no. I've obviously made a mistake somewhere. I actually started this topic to help me decide whether to aim for a dreadnought. I haven't actually got a dread yet, or any capital ship. I've just got fed up with constant PVP in highsec and feel I have pretty much done and learnt about everything in highsec, and wanted to know about capitals, taking out a POS in more detail. I have looked all over the internet, but didn't actually find a good site telling me about it all, I found very slim information, and I have been looking deeply into what I want to do in EVE now for a long time... So I was curious about capital warfare/taking out a POS, as i'm looking to try something different in EVE. |

Go and find a POS owned by a 3 or 4 man corp without a strong alliance and wardec them. A budy of mine was ransoming POS's that way and I think all he had was 6 or 7 min trained alts in BS's to shoot the POS. Have fun.

POS bashing isn't generally considered to be fun, exactly. It is basically the PvP equivalent of mining. You sit there in space and grind away at it, potentially for a very long time depending on how many friends you have. If you have a good group in comms and a few beers it could be sort of fun, I suppose, just not as much fun as shooting spaceships.
Generally speaking, not many people attack POSes for fun. Usually there is some purpose to it. Maybe you want that moon for yourself, maybe you want to provoke a fight with the owner, or to destroy his assets if he is an enemy to you. Go ahead and give it a try, though, if it sounds like a good time to you. Be sure to update this thread to let us all know what POS you are going to attack and when you want to do it. We are all rooting for you. Join the Revolutionary Front and liberate New Eden from it's stuff.

I'm pretty sure a dread with a capital armor repairer or capital shield booster and enough capacitor to run it would be able to take on some POSes alone, however it's not uncommon for them to have energy neutralizers on them. I've been in groups that sieged POSes without breaking a sweat, but we had 40+ people in battleships and logistics. It would also take well over an hour to get the shield down even with that many people helping.
Once we had a dreadnought fleet come help us. There were about 10-15 dreadnoughts which all went into siege mode and started firing at the POS. They took it down from around 80% to reinforced in about 20 minutes IIRC. One lone dreadnought would probably take several hours to take out a POS, and you'd need to replenish ammo once in a while. Mittani, where have you gone to? I miss you :( |

Nothing wrong with that. We all started somewhere.
But here's a very big hint.
A single capital ship is absolutely useless. A capital fleet is marginally useful. A capital fleet supported by a subcapital fleet is practically unstoppable.
If you want to play with your capital ships you HAVE to join a corp/alliance. If you fly alone you will eventually get caught and killed. Even tracking dreads can't track everything. Even triage carriers can be taken down with surprisingly little DPS when you're neuted out.
If you're in a small gang of capital ships with an FC who knows what he is doing you'll be ok. If you're alone it takes an instant to scan out a capital ship due to their massive sig radius, and only a few more seconds to warp to it and point it. When you're pointed you can't jump either. So that's you done. Game over. That guy can literally hold you there all day long while he calls his friends. So get some experience before you get killed. |

The trouble you'll have doing it solo in a dread is when you siege you can't move\runaway\cancel siege until it's done so you're just sat there. There's also the warp scram batteries that can stop you warping away. That and the fact that with 4bil on field you'd be better off with a handful of battleships than a solo dread.
Good luck with your pos bash, hope it's "fun" and you learn a load (mostly that people are pussies and won't fight) |
