Im looking to upgrade my computer to run fraps a bit better, I was wondering what I should focus on?
CPU, Memory, Video card?
Current setup is Athalon xp 2800 Ati Radeon 9800 XT 1 gig of pc2100 memory 40 gig HD
I run fraps at about 18 fps...but record at like 10-9...hence i always miss out on really good footage.

Any reccomendations for student with a budget ^^ thx!

Edit-trying couldn;t hurt:)

I run my SATA drive in several partitions. Seems to work alright. Totally seperate HDD is better ofc. SCSI and/or RAID even better.

Its a good system tbh. A seperate hard drive would proberly get you the best results, get a big one and u also dont have to worry about space. ----- Eris Discordia; I think the proper term is <3

I'm about to put together a new system for frapsing too... gonna go with a
AMD X2 3800+ (cant afford a 4400+ :( ) Sapphire Crossfire mobo 2x200 GB drives RAID 0 2x400 GB drive RAID 0 + whatever i can salvage from my current system...
besides that I have ~ $600 set aside for a vid card... my plan was to assign FRAPS to the 2nd core and then have it dump to the 2nd raid array takign as much strain off eve process as possible. I tried frapsing our run of the 10/10 complex two weeks ago with 6x AA 16x AF and it wasnt too bad with my current system which is very similar to yours except i had 2x 80 GB drives in RAID 0. However it kinda lagged on the initial warpin heh.
In your case a bigger 2nd HD would prolly help the most. And you dump fraps to it rather than accessing the same drive that EVE is on. Oh yeah also keep it on a different IDE channel than the primary drive.

Screw FRAPS. Heres what you do:
Get a nice VIVO card. (Thats Video In Video out). Now, get a video recording device like a VCR, TIVO, another VIVO-capable computer, whatever (VCR works great IMO), and hook it up to your card's S-Video out port. If you want audio, you'll need to have a miniplug-to-RCA adapter cable running from your computer to the recording device.
Press Record on your recording device. Play EVE, enjoy lots of beautiful frames per second.
Stop recording. Connect your recording device to your Video In port. Now just use some movie-making software to save the incoming video to your hard drive, and edit it into a kickass, silky-smooth, clear video.
Result: Higher quality recordings at hundreds of frames per second. Won't take up hard drive space or put your computer under stress. A lot more friendly on your wallet too.

Edited by: Eyeshadow on 05/08/2005 14:38:48 i run an XP 2800 machine, with 1gig ram and geforce 5500 256 ddr card, recording at 1280/1024 half size, 30 fps, no sound, no AA or any of that guff and u cant even notice any lag in game or in the fraps footage. Second hard drive coes help a fair bit but i see no reason why you should get such poor results with ur machine when u have a better gfx card than mine and mine records fine

Well, somethings definatly wrong.
I record at full speed, 30 FpS FRAPS settings, using this setup:
AMD Athlon XP 2400 256 memory GForce4 Ti 4200 18 GB HD
At 1280 * 1024 i still get ~20 FpS. I DO record to a different, 1 GB HD which is purely used for EVE footage. Transfer that to the 18 GB main one after each session so its always empty.
