You need an ice harvester and a mining barge to mine ice.

If I were you I would train up to use miner II's first then work towards barge skills then (if you still want to) go for the skills to use an ice harvester, Ice mining is a dull job though and by the time you have the skills to do it there are usually a lot more profitable things you could be doing with your time. Ice roids do not pop and you don't need to move from one to the next, so once you lock on and start mining there is usually nothing more to do than move your mined ice from your cargo bay to your jet can/secure container or fight the occasional rat (I would recommend drone skills if you want to mine ice) Hope this is helpfull. If you sail a rowboat I would recommend a fishing rod not a trawler net.

Just remember what you want to be in long term, more of a minebear, scumbear, killbear, gankbear, etc.
If you want to go to the mining path, it will take you 3 months to get there and later another 3 months to change to something else ;p

Hello,
Reguarding how long it will take to be a miner, I thought I was would jump in. Mining ice isn't all that profitable. The last I heard even omber will get you much more profit.
Ok, now what I really came here to say is that you can be a good miner with just mining 4 and mining drones 1. A 7 turret battleship with lots of mining drones has a huge yield that can beat the yield of the first 2 mining barges. It is the second best miner actually.. and all you need is the ~2-3 days of training for the mining skills, more for BS of coarse.. but anyways. All of the mining skills and such are only good if you go for mining barge 5/5 and use the best barge. That barge beats a miner battleship. Is it worth it though? Who knows. On one hand you can mine ice, but on the other BS's are better defensively, often better for low sec mining, more versatile, and cut off months of training time.
Your choice really! I have mining 4, mining drone op 1, and drone interfacing to 4. I'm a mining monster in my dominix. (6x miner IIs, 13 mining drone I's).. or even my mega (7x miner IIs, 9 mining drone I's). I can pull in mining drones and put out combat drones for rats, and load a launcher to my mega as well if need be. Can also tank incredibly well without stopping my mining.
Strip miners look cooler and have better range though.

One thing you didn't mention was that being able to afford a BS will take the average casual player about 2-3 months of on-off mining to get enough credits for it.
Megathron is a great mining ship, but costs between 100-120M. :) I make about 4M/day mining, but I only mine for an hour. I'll be moving to a Covetor within a few weeks though :)
Another decent mining ship is the Gallente Battle Cruiser - 6 M2's + 1 M1 = Beats the first 2 Mining barges.
It's also a ton cheaper then a BS (BC cost me 22M) ------------ Elucidate - Extraordinarily Lazy Miner |

The thing is, BS are not supposed to be used for mining because of the huge ISK loss if you do lose them while mining in low sec. Afterall, it is LOL to see a Mega with Miner IIs lost at a gate camp ;p
I think even the most expensive mining barge is still cheaper and smaller risk to take for low sec mining compared to a Mega. But all of these depends only on your wallet, of course^^.

I think this thread has gone a little off topic, we were talking about ice mining. The old BS miner V the barge miner is a topic that has been thrashed about loads, everywhere I look there are people in battleships trying hard to justify using them for mining when that is clearly not what they were designed for. With my big barge, T2 crystals and 10 Harvester drones I can fill 3 cans an hour, something that I think any battleship would be hard pushed to match, now if I could persuade someone in a battleship to actually kit it out with ooooo say the odd weapon or two and cover me to mine in low security space, we could actually make some money. at one point I had 6 T2 mining lasers on a tempest and I was so ashamed of myself that I went to another system where none of my corp mates could see me mine LOL, I think you can do what you like but if the guy wants to mine ice he's going to have to train for a barge and there's nothing more to it. Can you mine ice in a battleship....NO QED
