sec status well how many times have I been attacked by ppl with a positive sec rating
well player descrition then wait was attacked by UK mining corp (look them up they dont have pirate anywhere in their description)
oh well corp standings then THAT shows that they have alot of peoble dislike them or does it ??
the answerr is NO only NPC standings show unless they are standings between your corp and theirs so when do you know that there is a pirate in the system you are in ??
well when they start attacking you or someone else and they scream bloody murder in local !!
I would like for all standings to show up when I click disliked by (or liked by) otherwise there is very little way of knowing a pirate has entered the system you are in

In 0.0 it's really difficult to tell, but in 0.0 somehow everyone turns pirate, even if he might be your friendly neighbour while you are in empire.
In low sec space I think it's easy to tell, since... if you don't happen to be the pirate's first target ever (which could also mean his attempt of killing you will fail) his rating should be low... and getting lower.
Edit: I don't think corp standings should be visible to others, it used to be like that and it was rubbish. That's simply not your business which corps like who and why.

even in "secure" space (.4-.1) I have been attacked by players by positive sec rating
even is we can not see the actuall standings having a second rating that was a avarage of liked and disliked would be good though seing the actual ratings would be better imo

If you don't know the person to be friendly, assume they are pirate. It's that easy

Easy way is to assume everyone is hostile, and UK mining corp are actually pirates
Just set there corp to -5 standing and the next time you see them, blow them out of the sky or you can always war dec.

I think that would be ok, as long as no private corp information gets revealed.

Maybe high sec players keep shooting you becuase they don't like you. Doesn't make them a pirate.
Anywho local is meant to be a social tool, not an infallible early warning system.

although that of course is a distinct possibilety with all the post I make I dont think so
now wold Rho you are a known pirate so is corps like Tundragon, j0kers, m0o and several others I would just like some kind of warning BEFORE I am locked that a pirate has entered the system and if it was that we could see standings that would give us some warning VS now we got NONE

If they shoot at you, you can assume they could be a pirate. Another hint is frozen corpses littering the belts and gates. A hint things are not safe.

Edited by: Wrayeth on 07/08/2005 04:10:22 The best way to tell if there's a pirate in-system is to get to know the names and corporations of the pirates that hang in your area. Also, as you've already mentioned, sec status is helpful but not always a good indicator - a few days ratting in 0.0 will get your sec status back on its feet. Another thing to watch for is a person's bio - surprisingly, a lot of pirates proudly list themselves as such in their bio.
As to whether 0.0 turns people into pirates, yes and no. PvP is essential to survival in 0.0 - to hold territory, you must defend it from both pirates and those who want to take it from you. This means that you must usually kill anyone who is not on your "friendly" list if you want to avoid getting ganked.
Let me give you a little example of life out in unsecure space:
Your corp lives in 0.0. The corp is low on megacyte to build ships for its members. This being the case, your corp decides to hold a mining operation. People get into various mining ships from ospreys to apocs to haulers and barges and get out into a belt. After finding a tankable spawn, they settle down to mine. A few members in combat ships are also in system or nearby, either hunting rats or waiting to play guard.
After fifteen minutes of uneventful cutting, a scout in the next system reports someone just jumped in-system but they don't have a visual. The person is not from a known pirate or hostile corporation and has a 4.2 security status and no bio. The unknown pilot is also not from a friendly or allied corp.
From here, your corp has several choices. It can...
1.) ..take no action.
2.) ...warp to a safespot.
3.) ...try to leave the system.
4.) ...attempt to kill the intruder.
Let's examine each of these options.
1.) Take no action.
In this instance, there are three likely outcomes.
The first (and least likely, based on my experience), is that this person is just traveling through. If they're a complete unknown, they usually don't have any reason for being in the territory your corporation/alliance controls (all corps in 0.0 keep a list of friends and enemies and set corp standings accordingly). This possibility is present in all of the other scenarios, too.
The second is that the person is actively looking to gank you and your corpmates. While you sit there, blissfully confident that someone with a 4.2 sec status and no known hostility towards your corp is no threat, he warps into your belt in a gankageddon, starts warp-scrambling the mining-fitted apoc, and turns his lasers on the barges (who can't get into warp before they're destroyed). Then he turns on your buddy's scrambled apoc and blasts it out of space. He picks up the loot, then leaves system.
The third possibility is that the unknown pilot is a scout for a larger group. While you sit there, his covert ops warps into the belt (cloaked) and sets up a perfect warp-in point for the six-ship fleet waiting three jumps away. They move in, warp to their gangmate, and proceed to wtfpwn your entire corp. (This option could also just be a scout that's going up the pipeline, reporting everyone in the area so his buddies can pick and choose targets.)
2.) Warp to a safespot.
You warp to a safespot. The person coming through is a pirate/hostile alt and does a quick check of the belts and planets, then leaves when he doesn't find anyone to kill.
The second possibility is similar to the first, but this time the pirate stays in system, camping it and waiting for you to make the mistake of trying to leave. He can also call in reinforcements at this point.
The third is that he's a scout. He will either report the number of people in-system and ships types and head on (resulting in an incoming enemy fleet with safespot busters) or hunt for your safespot himself while he calls in reinforcements.
(cont'd)

3.) Try to leave the system.
You try to leave the system. He isn't at the gate and you leave successfully. Alternately, he is but you have an insta and get by him...of course, you have to worry about him jumping, too, and killing you on the other side, but...
You try to leave, but he's at the gate and shoots up one or more of your ships.
He's a scout and follows you as you leave the system, keeping an eye on your movements and reporting them to the fleet that will soon be ganking you.
4.) Attempt to kill the intruder.
You don't care who this guy is - he's not friendly to you and more than likely is trying to gank you and your corp. You call in your buddies who were ratting or playing guard in nearby systems while your miners safespot. They go looking for the person and either kill him or attempt to do so (the hostile may or may not attempt to run). Said unknown may or may not call in reinforcements.
The next possibility is the same as above, but you have your combat pilots cover the gate, instead, and also scout the next system over. Your safespotted miners warp to the gate and leave system while your combat pilots cover the gate and shoot at the unknown if he shows up there. They then head to the closest available POS or station and either get into combat ships or wait it out. Your scouts announce any hostiles along the route, etc.
Third, the unknown is a scout and either leaves system and calls in a fleet at the same time you call in your combat pilots, most likely resulting in a fight at some point, or stays in system and also calls in a fleet, again resulting in a fight. If you manage to kill the scout before the fleet arrives, the hostiles coming in behind him will have no way of knowing which direction your miners went if you subsequently leave the system and make for a station or POS.
***********
I don't claim these are all the possibilities (I'm half asleep and also too lazy to type out more), but this is just to give you an idea of what life is like out in 0.0. You'll notice that, if you don't act upon the arrival of an unknown, the result usually consists of getting ganked or being greatly inconvenienced (the latter by having to spend time sitting in a safespot doing nothing, often for over an hour).
Anyway, that's why people shoot neutrals/unknowns in 0.0. The people out there keep close tabs on who their friends are and who's an enemy. Anyone who is not either is assumed to be hostile.

OP has a valid point. You used to be able to tell via standings what other people thought of the bogey (or at least his corp, using the liked by, disliked by tabs) which was very handy in determining the best course of action. Unfortunately this was removed to lessen load on the DB so only NPC standings show. Another example of the coding not keeping up with the game design imo.
