Since we have freighters in, why not have Interbus be a specilized NPC corp with custom freighters. These freighters would travel between systems like a bus system. Pilots and their active ships could 'soft dock' to the freighter for transport from location to location.
When docked all other active pilots would no longer be in the local channel as the ship made it's round and would be in that ships interbus channel. Interbus, being NPC, would also be immune to attacks.
Finally, it would of course cost isk to use the interbus. Ticket price would be determnied by ship size/cost/etc..

what would be the reasoning for doing this? if gate costs were implemented, or the bus was much faster, or you wanted to move a fleet in one coordinated move without the horrendous logistical problems, i could understand it, but otherwise there seems little point :/

think that might be a good idea, really. Was sort of thinking of something along the lines lately. My problem is at the moment im still in a starter corp, but have formed an association with a number of players. Lately there's been some trouble getting everyone together in one spot as we all base in slightly different regions usually. Also, i dislike having to make a ten-jump trek between various agents i may like to use :) Obviously, an integration of an npc 'taxi', so long as its even mildly faster than autopilot jumping would help to lessen the use of instas, which i understand are something of a drain lately :P

Another thought too: Instead of making it NPC managed, why not have a class of ships for PCs to use. I'm sure you could make alot of money offering 'ferry' services to other players. Even if only specific routes were available or something... Also, i figure one of the goals of any mmorpg is going to be to encourage player interaction. Having everyone sitting a huge freighter awaiting transport seems to be fairly efficient way to meet other players and chat while in transit :P
