Until the new patch came out, I had a nice little setup mining Omber in a 0.5 system with over a dozen belts. I didn't refine the ore, as my refining skills are not up to par yet. Now it's been increasingly difficult to find similar systems since the patch. Is it worth it to venture into 0.1 - 0.4 to start mining? Is there an ore there that's potentially more valuable than Omber to mine? Also...if I decide to go there, I want a cruiser that can mine decently AND protect me with drones. I was thinking about a Vexor with 4 Miner II's and 6 Heavy Drones. Any thoughts?

Firstly, yes there are more valuable ores in <0.4. However, you will of course be leaving yourself open to the risk of player pirates if you hang around in belts in low sec space. You will also lose a lot of time going back to a nearby station to get a hauler if you are mining solo.
In terms of NPC defense, the Vexor should handle itself OK in 0.4 or so, but may struggle with rats in 0.1 space, and will obviously be no match for a roaming gank squadron.
I tend to do low sec mining if I need large amounts of specific minerals like Nocxium. If you're looking into mining for profit, it's quite feasible to mine Tritanium and Pyerite, especially since this patch has seen an increase in demand for these minerals due to Outpost and Capital ship construction.

Its not that hard to make 2 mil per hour in 0.8's.

work up to a dominix, brutix works with 7 miner 2's but the drone bay is still a little light to handle some of those rats. a dominix with only 6 miner 2's is much better due to the massive amount of drones/armor to protect yourself from any spawns(0.0 minus maybee some bs spawns is very doable). vexor would be risky, a cruiser spawn with a couple frigs would be a tough match at times.

I comment so much on the mining aspect, but as for your Vexor... I lost one recently to a pirate in about 10 seconds. Granted, he was in an Apoc, but pirates with Apocs aren't exactly hard to come by.
I would think that the profit a <.4 venture would yield is quite affected by player pirates in that system... I was in Maut, two jumps from Orvolle, so obviously I wasn't in the most backwater of systems.
Amd no, I wasn't mining in such a pirate-infested .2, just hunting some NPC rats. I wasn't expecting such a quick omgwtfpwn, even against a BS. :P

Yeah, pirates tend to go for the easy pickings most of the time. So if resistance in a system is messing with their profits, chances are good they will move on. Just don't gloat or insult them, cause then they might decide to stay. And when they decide to stay, they'll be all the more determined to break the resistance.

I have long used a Vexor for .4 mining, miner2s and 10-12 medium drones. I sometimes lose a drone to an exceptionally hard cruiser spawn, but that's rare. ------ I generally assume the following: 1. 95% of Empire Carebears don't get 0.0 PVPers. 2. 95% of 0.0 PVPers don't get Empire Carebears. 3. 100% of Ore Thieves steal just to upset the Miners. |

Speaking as a pirate this is very true for the most part.
Smacking and gloating is the biggest incentive for a pirate corp to hang around in order to make their point.

The deeper space you go, the more isk you make.
Personally,, I'm still not ready to head out into deep space, but with a bit of research and planning, you can still get a bit of the good stuff. I've been know to mine in .4 systems, with no stations, surrounded by Empire space, for Jaspert, which gets me Zydrine.
So a bit of research and cartography will go a long way.
