More of a inquisitive topic on my part. I really don't have too much judgement on the company other than the fact I think they are on the way, if not already, to an online juggernaught.
What makes these guys so successful? I've played COH and looking forward to experimenting with COV and the pvp it may bring. However, now Autoassault is coming soon, and wonder how they can have that many online games and still attract the player base. I think they curretly have Tabula Rosa, COH, Lineage 1 and 2, COV in dev'ment, Auto Assault in dev'ment, and of course Guildwars.
Seems as though they managed to tap into something with game dev'ment, but I am wondering if anyone has a better idea than I.
All input appreciated.

I would have to say the large Asian market. From what I hear, MMOs are quiet popular over there, especially in South Korea, where NCSoft is based. Lineage and Lineage II are major Asian MMOs, and NCSoft is probably using the profits from their previous games to fund new ones. Auto Assault and City of Heroes are mainly developed by 3rd parties, with NCSoft playing the role of publisher, so they don't really have to give up too many resources to get them to work. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Nail, head. CoH is being developed by what was a relative group of unknowns, and AA is being made by the guys who did Jumpgate (which bodes REALLY well for that game ). NCS saw what EA was doing as a publisher and said "let's tap dat ass!" -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

Now I can't recall if Guild Wars is from one of these third parties or from NCSoft directly. I had no idea Auto Assault was from the Jumpgate dev's. I have got to read more of that game because I am really ignorant about it.
Still, I think their whole little franchaise is doing extremely well. I have to admit to having some hope for COV and given their attention to balance, I would hope the pvp would be extremely fun.

Dunno, I kind of see NCSoft as a publisher rather than a game dev. Maybe they started as a game dev. and then got into publishing as well. From they way, I see it, NCSoft has got plenty of short term hit games where they do market well but long term wise it is hard to know. Their games does have the fun factor and usually fun factors mean short term gaming. Only 2 ways to go as online game dev/publishers.
1. Contents to keep your player base and expand it so you will get more money. 2. Mass games so you will get more money fast, doesnt matter if they die out eventually, because you will have more titles by then.
But (1) is better for long term gaming as it builds customer loyalty and branding. Just my opinion.

Though I haven't played CoH or it's expansions I understand they're supposedly quite good and very popular. I do play Guild Wars, since open beta. It was developed by ArenaNet (apparently a bunch of former Blizzard folks left to form their own company) and published by NCSoft. It's very popular and lots of fun, though I'm not sure if it has the lasting appeal of Eve. They seem to be doing very well with the CoH and Lineage brands, not to mention GW which has been No. 1 in the UK sales charts for a long time (with only a recent brief interruption before taking it back).
They're biggest markets are in east Asia as others mentioned, where online gaming is the most popular. I think they'll continue to go from strength to strength with their existing and planned product lines, and as an avid GW player, I hope they do.

City of Heroes is awesome, but I stopped playing it for a while when I found Eve, different kind of fun, more for what I was looking for at the time, I guess.
City of Villains is very likely to own my soul, however. . . .

They prolly found out theres more profit in screwing over other dev companies for some cheap warez they can then publish. Getting some coke-head to start a small company with some deluded coders. Drive them to utmost output, screw them and run off with the rights etc.

CoH is great for a while but becomes *very* monotonous because it has absolutely no depth when put next to Eve.
