Voice chat is a must for me but I really hate teamspeak. Most of the EVE servers I have been on use low end codecs that sound like someone is starting a semi rather than having a conversation. Ventrilo, on the other hand, seems to utilize better codecs on average.
I'm not looking to spark some flame war pitting Vent vs TS (so all of those who love TS ... well stay on it). What I am looking for is a populated Eve Ventrilo server. Anyone know of any?

Lets go the whole hog.
Look at Battlefield 2, they have a built in voice communication system that organises itself around the teams and sides that form in the game.
A similar eve method where you press one button to talk to corp, another to talk to gang, and possibly another to talk to a selected player-made channel would be dead handy (and integerating it with /ignore would be a must )

I wouldn't mind stepping away from my EVE/SWG/CoH/MISC vent server to chat with some folks in EVE. If you have a public vent server post your IP! -------------------- The Nest

Good point actually!
Battlefield 2 VOIP works very well in did! And all integrated within the game, so no need for extra software to provide basic and fast communication :)

But you guys are missing something. BF2 VOIP handles up to 64 players at a time, no big deal for a server. EVE Online handles up to 13k people at a time, major upgrades would be needed if they did. Not to mention the bandwidth as 13k people talk at the same time. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

lol for some reason when I read that I imagined 13k people yelling rabble rabble at the same time in 1 channel.

But how can you time a log-in trap if your voice-com is down when you're not logged in? 0_o

fair point :)
As far as I know only 2 things are impossible to realize in the real world.
Return into from here we born...
and
skip dying...
Therefore everything else is feasible; its only matter of good thinking, time and action.

Well if they are smart, they would make it into a distributed system and not centralized on their server.
Game code needs to run on their machines and over their machines since otherwise people would cheat. VoIP has no such requirement.
Have it so people can activate a setting that allows them to be the server for corp/gang and all EVE would have to do is choose one of those that has it set and send that client and the others the info they need to connect. The rest can then happen automagically and the EVE servers woudln't have to bother with it anymore.
The only thing in this is the privacy issue of allowing others to get your IP, but if the option is given to never connect to voice chat (also usefull for those on dial up) then people who want to keep theirs secret have that option.

You just went into the area of needlessly complex. If people are going to host voice chat on their system, why not have them just use TS or Ventrillo and not have CCP bother with writing the code? -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Ventrilo has brought my corporation to its knees. Nobody does anything anymore, we just sit around and try out new phonetic phrases to replace our name with when we log onto the server.

Ventrilo is for boys what TeamSpeak is for men.
You can make TeamSpeak sound better than Ventrilo by actually configuring it serverside.

If you read Ventrilo's info you will see that it is going to a pay model. Here is the info right from their website http://www.ventrilo.com/purchase.php
Quick notes:
The public version has a limit to the people that can use it. If you have a older version that allows more then you are in violation of their license.
If you are using it the way most of the people here in Eve are using it then you in violation of their license.
If you are using it outside the USA Ventrilo is subject to United States export controls.
Read their forums and you will start to get the picture.
AND at that point if you still have any doubts contact their staff and ask them directly. I did. Our corp has a Teamspeak server and everyone wanted to switch over to Vent. We would need to get pro because we have the potential for 18 users on at the same time. They told us everything that I just told you (and again, you can find it on their website)
Bottom line, it might sound better but it is not worth it IMO. Also, since I host my own servers I can tell you that it uses almost 75% more bandwidth then TS does. Bandwidth equals cost and it's kist not worth it.
