I was just wondering what is the best way to fight missiles nowadays? Defenders or Smartbombs? And how many defenders does it take to take down a torp/cruise i heard that the success rate was like 30-50% ______________________________________________ "I¦m not even supposed to be here!", Dante. |

AFAIK the hp of missiles did not change, so unless I'm wrong about that, cruise missiles only require a single defender, while torps require 3.
However the increased speed of all missiles, combined with the 1-2 second delay before a defender acquires a target, has made them completely useless at short range, where as before they were merely questionable. At long range there is the same old problem of only targeting the nearest missile, made worse by new missile speeds - the 2nd missile is all the closer by the time your defenders will target it. Similarly, timing smartbomb detonations to take down incomings has gotten much more difficult.
Best defense against today's missiles? Speed.

I think sig radius is best defence to be honest. Get a nice inty and fit a Ab to it and nothing will touch you.

and before anyone says.. as missiles now behave more like guns defenders/smartbombs should be less effective IMHO

Assuming you keep your speed up. 
Sig radius is something you don't have any control over for a given ship, other than choosing to not hit your MWD. But regardless of what ship you're in, if you encounter a missile boat it's time for full speed ahead and hope for the best. Fundamental fact is that you're NOT going to avoid getting hit in the first place (save maybe against torps), you either reduce incoming damage as much as you can or you tank the lot of it.
Further, I'm not convinced putting an AB on an inty is that great an idea. Haven't tested it, but what I've been hearing is that the higher speed balances out the increase in signature radius and you end up taking about the same damage.

Crow at 550m/s takes ~30-40 dmg / torp (me crow vs Raven) I imagine Interceptor at >1km/s with AB II/OD should get ~10dmg/torp.
Only problem will be rockets then, but they don't do much damage anyway and have a real low range.
There was a tool to calculate dmg for different sig radius and speeds on the boards. Try to find it for further info.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was thinking in terms of comparing to a MWD-ing inty, not an inty with no speed module at all. MWD is currently pretty much standard fitting for any ceptor.
I don't see benefit in dropping the MWD for an AB if survivability against missiles is roughly the same - which is what I've been hearing. At that point the interceptor's role is better served with the greater speed a MWD permits.

MWD better than AB hands down After a certain amount of speed it completely negates the sig penalty.
Senario: Me in a crow with all missile skills lvl 4, std missiles 4, interceptors 4, using bloodclaws and a domination BCS. My corpmate in a Dare Devil (angel frigate i believe) with MWD, max speed 5km/s.
He orbits me full speed about 20km out i sit still: [ 2005.08.08 08:30:33 ] (combat) Your Bloodclaw Light Missile I hits DonTrump [KJM], doing 0.6 damage.
(TBH i think light missiles still need some love, if im only gettin 0.6 dmg from lights (frigate weapon vs frigate) with all support skills at lvl 4 and a 150 million isk BCS, something definately aint right)
