We at our TS just had a little fun with the dreadnoughts and we spoke about the moros as a miner, with 2 strip miners, 35 harvesters, ... so i was wondering, would it actually pull out more then a large barge? also, why dont we have capital mining lasers and/or capital mining drones?

well you couldn't put 2 strip miners on a moros. even with the best faction co procs its not possible. unless i'm missing something

Edited by: FalloutBoy on 09/08/2005 21:54:50 did some rough calcs though and with maxed skills and modulated deep core miners and 35 harvys you'd be around 1600 m3 per second. then with 7 lows and a 8000m3 base you can get the cargo to 34k m3. would make a very expensive but effective miner (no tank or hauler required. Not that I would ever think of using one of these ships for such a thing. But I could see a corp with 3 or 4 of these putting them to use in such a way during peace times

Well, also keep in mind that the Moros doesnÆt have that all important line in their details as the mining barges do:
ôSpecial Ability: Able to equip Strip Miner and Ice Harvester turrets. 3% better yield for Strip Miners per level.ö
That ôable to equipö very likely works two fold. It of course reduces the CPU needs of the lasers quite a bit to allow their mounting on a barge, but also since no other ship says that, itÆs likely also another layer of limitation so that even if a Dreadnought packs in the Co-Processors for 3,000+ CPU it likely wonÆt be able to fit the Strip Miner or Ice Harvester anyway since it doesnÆt actually say that it can be mounted. Not completely certain till someone tries to plug one in I guess.
That being said however, the Moros is still completely free to mount three Modulated Deep Core Miner 2Æs and use 35 Miner 2 drones for instance (presuming master level in Gallente dreadnought)
Now, those factors in place can translate into:
Miner 2 drone yield: 25m3/min Mining Drone skill: 25% bonus to yield of mining drones at lv5 (for a 1.25 multiplier)
Yield from 35 miner 2 drones in a perfect rig: 25 * 1.25 * 35 = 1093.75m3/min
Three MDCM2 lasers and Tech 2 crystals with perfect mining skills:
120m3/180 sec * 1.25 * 1.25 * 1.75 = 328.125m3/180 sec
328.125m3/180 sec * 3 lasers = 984.375m3/180 sec 984.375m3/180 sec divided by three minute cycles is approximately 328.125m3/min
after the smoke clears:
328.125m3/min from lasers 1093.75m3/min from drones (1312.5m3/min if all harvesters)
Total: 1421.875m3/min (aprox) (1640.625m3/min if using 35 harvesters)
Covetor, ultimate rig: 1132.03125m3/min from lasers 312.5m3/min from Miner 2 drones (375m3/min if harvester drones)
Total 1444.53125m3/min (aprox) (1507.03125m3/min if using 10 harvesters)
So it quickly boils down to IF the Moros is using and ultimate rig of all harvesters it can out pace the Covetor in itÆs ultimate rig, however, if the Moros is in a more ôpracticalö Miner Drone 2 rig, then it is over taken by the Covetor.
So sometimes yes, the moros is indeed the ultimate mining platform mathematically, and sometimes it is not the ultimate mining platform either by the travel times of the drones adding up over time and thus reducing that efficiency some (even a matter of percent loss in efficiency would make the Moros an incredibly expensive miner that is the same or lesser than a covetor) also the drones themselves directly determine whether or not the Moros is an incredible miner or not. T2 drones being more plausible and replaceable than Harvesters would make them the more likely candidate for use, especially given that the moros would of course have to mine in 0.4 space or lower where harvester use is ôriskyö to say the least.

If I ever see someone mining in a dread, I'll definitely post a screenshot...of it getting hit by LOTS of torpedos and warp scrambled while I call in a fleet.

Well, I am going for a Moros to PvP in Fleets.
Hearing about the mining capabilities I might also use it for mining instead of my Covetor. The reason for this is obvious: Mining solo in 0.0 without need for a tank and without need for an hauler.
Also I think a Moros as mining support and tank will also help a lot against unwanted disturbance by rats (using only 20 mining drones and having another 20 tech II combat drones in bay).
Funny thing anyway :D

Actually my char is based on PvP Skills, but from time to time even me has to mine to earn isk. And mining in a dread is probably quite safe - hehe.

In that case I'm sure you have your hands full killing all the carebears who use COMBAT vessels like Megas or Apocs to mine. Good luck in your chosen career.
It would actually be fun to mine in a Moros, mostly so you could take screenshots and cause some heart attacks to people. And hey, it's probably the best pvp-monkey attractor you can think of, so: park Moros next to belt, start mining. Have support fleet sit in a safespot. Wait for monkey horde to arrive. Unleash gazillion heavy drones and turn on tank. Call in support fleet. Watch fireworks.
