Ok, so what's the story on these? I assume that for ~18mil apiece they have to be good for something...maybe it's inflated T2 prices talking.
Anyway, so I pop in a mining crystal, and then what happens? As far as I can tell, the mining crystal boosts output by ~1.6%...which if I add that onto the base Modulated Strip Miner comes out to way, way, less than a standard Strip.
What's going on here? Why are they so expensive, and am I doing the math correctly? Also, what's this volatility and volatility damage stuff about?
If there's already a thread outlining this, please point me to it in this thread. I wasn't able to find out about them using Google or EVE-Search.

Strip Miner 1 - yield 970 m3/3 minutes Strip Miner II with T2 Crystals - 1132 m3/3 minutes.
Does it explain the difference in price?
If you mine Veldspar it is around 15k ISK per 3 minutes more. So after 60 hours of mining you have your money back and start earning more. If you mine Bistot/Crockite, it is around 100k ISK per 3 minutes more. So after 9 hours of mining you have your money back and start earining even more.

And as for price, a couple months ago i was happy to find them under 30mil. I bought my last for 16mil. ================================================

Sounds good. I'm not sure how an increased yield modifier of 1.6% comes out to 1132m3 per minute from 970m3, though. Is the description of these crystals just wrong?
Also, what do the volatility numbers on these crystals mean? Are they useless, or is there some kind of effect?

it's a common oversight, but if you look carefully enough, or have your screen resolution set right you will see that it's not actually 1.62% it's actually 1.62x
And mathematically, it's 1.625
it's actually more helpful to look at the actual item database:
Veldspar Mining Crystal I
here it is a bit more clear, and displays the bonus apropriately as "162.5%", so of course when you make it a decimal to more easily multiply with, it's 1.625x as the benefitial multiplier.
Veldspar Mining Crystal II
and here it's 175% (1.75x multiplier).
They make the displayed information more confusing than necessary as in game it shows it as a 1.62x (or at least they did) and of course many people think the "x" is a "%".

Ok cool. Though if you right click the line in the item description of a Veld mining crystal, copy the text and then paste it into notepad, it's a '%'.
Looks like CCP just got it wrong.
Does that mean I can safely ignore volatility as well?

Are these actually working properly? I hear conflicting reports all the time that crystals aren't working at all, hence the low price of modulated strip miner IIs.

They definitely work. I can attest to that after having tried it earlier today.
Problem is that the percentage gain was only 62%, fitting a Veld tech 1 crystal to a modulated strip miner 2.
Basically it hopped up from 970m3 to 1050m3 every 3 minutes. It will take a long time to get this new setup to pay for itself. I can't say it was the best investment I've ever made.

Covetor with 3 Modulated strip miner-2 + tech-2 crystal + 9 harvester drones = 3 full jet cans in an hour.
I canĘt run this rig without combat air patrol, so I tie up a pilot guarding me, and I wonĘt run it in lower than .5 space, even though a good guard could deal with the NPC, itĘs the PCs that become the issue.

Yeah, that's essentially what I'm stuck doing until I'm filthy rich again. Blowing ~50m on these things is going to take a while to recoup in 0.5, that's for sure.
