Edited by: Hiro Protagonist on 21/07/2003 22:29:23 The amount of spam on the trade channel is starting to make it useless to eve players. The amount of repeated posts (sometimes every 15 s), multi-line posts, and general garbage makes it impossible to keep up.
The trade channel can also be argued to be a problem for CCP. It takes up both server time and network bandwidth to broadcast a constant flow of spam to hundreds of people. So there are real life reasons that CCP should try to slow them down a bit.
The spam problem especially applies to trade because it is a classic case of a tragedy of the commons - everyone is motivated to spam to it as much as possible (so their ad gets seen), but ultimately nobody gets their ad seen due to the spam.
So here's my proposed solution:
Charge isk for posting the channel, at a rate that goes up for more usage. Here's an example:
1-25 letters/minute: 10 isk/letter 26-100 letters/minute: 100 isk/letter 101-200 letters/minute: 1000 isk/letter 201-400 letters/minute: 10000 isk/letter
So somebody posting "WTS Thorax - 6m" once every two minutes would only be paying about 75 isk/minute - hardly anything.
But some bozo posting:
============================ WTS ******** THORAX!!! ******** AWESUM l33t SHIPZ0R!!@! ============================
every 30 seconds (222 lpm) would be paying an ungodly amount of isk for the priveledge of spamming the channel.
CCP needs to penalize spam on the server-wide channels just like they penalize it on the evemail system.
A nice side-effect of this is that it would be a money-sink, which is a necessary element for a healthy economy in any MMOG.

Great idea. I think this would be hard to implement because it would require a fundamental addition to the chat interface, but it is possible.
I think another solution to stem spamming is to enable BETTER use of the in-game market (what all this is for anyway!).
- Allow people to sell ALL items on the market. I still don't understand the game design choice, making me watch that infernal trade channel just to let me buy some CU Vapors.
- Allow all Empire space to be in the same "Sales Region". It still seems wierd that I have to jump 2 jumps away just to look at what is on the market there. It's not like the technology of electronic communication makes knowing this data impossible. Roark - Taggart Transdimensional - www.taggarttd.com |

So only the rich can trade. Nice. Why bother going to trade, you have to pay to sell and you have to pay to email someone to find out more, and you have to pay so you can tell others that it's a scam.

That would never be implemented the players would just make a alternate trade channel and countinue from there. only way to do this would be to tax all player made channels period and thats not going to happen.
i aslo don't like the trade channel because instead of the game being divided up into regions and not knowing what the other region is selling a thorax for is supposed to be part of the game, but in the trade channel the server is unified in one place and prices are effected so forth, and the prices DROP down down down, if were going to have a trade channel we should go ahead and make a single destination or "Bazaar" cause thats what it basicly is now.
