Imagine a star. A billion billion billion tonnes of nuclear fusion, of hydrogen and helium - fierce white, yellow, red - angrily hurling photons into space.
Imagine that you come closer, inside the orbit of the first planet, so close that the churning light fills a quarter of the sky.
And imagine that, against the light, you can see a dot...

Take a step closer. Maybe you can see that the dot is a spaceship heading towards the star, the black glass of its beak-like prow reflecting the fury of its destination.
Maybe your vision can pass through the glass. Maybe you can see a man, stood stiffly as if awaiting inspection, gazing into the maelstrom.
And maybe you can see the knife in his hand, or the bead of sweat on his brow.

The man said nothing. There was nothing left to say. He continued to stare at the star through the c*ckpit window. It would soon be time. The bead of sweat started to roll, compelled towards the floor by the grav-generator beneath. The man felt it caress his forehead and nestle into his eyebrow. He did not move. His pod stood empty behind him, his link to immortality severed. He found it refreshing to look out into space with his own eyes, rather than through the distorted portal of the ubiquitous camera drones. His heartbeat slowed for a minute as he forgot his purpose and then quickened as his decision forced its way back into his mind.
The drugs were working now. The man realised he could not feel the floor beneath his feet, nor the rasp of his collar against his neck. He slowly bit his lip, waiting for the pain, but felt nothing, merely tasting the salty blood that coated his mouth. The blade was heavy in his hands.

Take a step back. Maybe you realise now that this is not a ship of war: that no guns adorn its hull, that no ammunition lies in its hold.
Maybe you can still see through the black glass, to the man standing stiffly inside. His gaze is no longer towards the star, but to some infinity above the solar plane.
And maybe you watch as he inserts the knife and drags it swiftly across his belly.

Imagine a star. A pyre that will burn for ten million more years, that will eventually swell red with hunger for the hydrogen and helium that are no longer there, before spewing its entrails into the void.
Imagine that, as you watch, there is an infinitesimal addition to the glare, as a few tonnes of tritanium and a few kilograms of carbon unite with the pyre.
And imagine that, against the light, you can see nothing.
