I was wondering what type of ships operate on planet surfaces. Air-ground, air-air, gunships, tactical bombers, troop and supply transports and so on.
Do our smaller frigates operate on the planets as well or is there a whole different range of ships down there? Does anyone know a good website to upload loudouts too that doesn't try to sell me plexes in between every line? |

I take it you mean... what ships can operate in an atmosphere?
Well... I might be wrong, but I think some images from the Templar One and Dust 514 adds show an Abaddon maneuvering within Amarr Prime's atmosphere. In which case, it means all our ships probably can (maybe not capital ships). |

Humm. Offhand, aside from the DUST vehicles (perhaps most notably the MCC; that thing is frigate-sized at least) I can think of...
- In the news articles surrounding the Empyrean Age expansion, atmospheric fighters were described as being used to hunt down roving gangs of freed slaves on Amarrian worlds attacked by the Elder fleets. - During the same events, the conquering of Caldari Prime by State forces included mechanized infantry "supported by armor, MTACs [small mechs], and gunships". - In the previous versions of the character creation system, choosing a Military > Special Operations background yielded a background image of a large 10x10 vehicle in an urban setting, perhaps meant for riot control. Unfortunately, I can no longer locate this image. |

I like the input so far. I wish there was more written on the subject. Does anyone know a good website to upload loudouts too that doesn't try to sell me plexes in between every line? |

One day I'll remember to save the link, but apparently tritanium doesn't work too well in an atmosphere and is quite reactive. Hence most of the space vehicles we use cannot be operated in an breathable atmosphere. Remember this. Trust your eyes, you will kill each other. Trust your veins, you can all go home. -Cold Wind |

Help me out here guys, what kind of ship was it? The planetary gravity gave it some trouble though.
I'd like to see more information on New Eden's planetary craft (surface ships, aerodynamic aircraft, armor, etc.) as well. It's kind of an esoteric topic though, so I'd guess the lore-creators have higher priorities for their time for now. |

Hence most of the space vehicles we use cannot be operated in an breathable atmosphere. None of the ships use pure tritanium for the hulls, because, well, they have an atmosphere inside them as well. The ship's hull is made of tritanium alloys and alloys can dramatically alter metal's characteristics. F.ex. the stainless steel. It does not rust, while the iron itself does. And aluminium is quite the reactive one as well, but it's used even in pure form throughout the modern world without any accidents, because of compact layer of oxides that form on its surface that stops any further interaction with the environment.
update: back a few years during one of the first fanfests an atmospheric flight demo (sorry for the crappy quality, that's the only i could find) has been shown to the public, it featured a standard Condor (or any of the base hull variations) flying inside the planet's atmosphere, so it's fairly possible for standard EVE ships to be able to enter the atmosphere w/o disintegrating due to tritanium reactiveness. |

Update: A colossal thank-you to Synthetic Cultist who tracked down the image I was thinking of in my previous post. |

I really hope the Dust 514 vehicle, dropsuit, and weapons list expand to give us proper representation of every empire... right now it seems like dropsuits are basically Scout = Gallente, Assault = Caldari, Heavy = Amarr, Logistics = Minmatar... shouldn't each have a unique racial style for each mission role?
And, can I have that tank? PLEASE! |

**semi-Spoiler Alert***
The ship in Templar One was a Dreadnaught (IIRC a Revelation) that entered atmosphere and caused havoc. I don't recall if the BC followed it down or just hit it from space but yes, both the planet's gravity and the drag/lack of control surfaces on the dread ended up cratering it with a little help from the BC... |

The main problem with our ships flying in atmosphere is that they aren't really aerodynamic. Massive amounts of energy would be required just to stop them from falling to the ground, let alone actually maneuver in atmosphere. I accidentally my assets, is this bad?-á |

This mostly, unless our ships could be fitted with some counter to gravity (i.e. mass effect fields from mass effect) it would be a no go. wumbo |

I'm fairly sure our ships do have that, because supporting multi-hudred people crews in outer space w/o gravity would be hardsome, and i certainly haven't seen rotating sections on any of the modern ships. Regarding the aerodynamic shapes (or lack there of), i'm fairly sure shields can be reconfigured to take a more, ahem, geometrical shape, like a spheroid (which, in fact, is quite aerodynamic), the only requirement then would be that the composite thrust vector would go through the center of the said shape. |
