Hi all,
I want to go to the Eve FanFest and ideally I'd like to take the wife along, however, she REALLY REALLY wants to visit a field of penguins, and as iceland is supposed to have penguins, I was wondering if any icelandic person can tell me how dificult this would be? to visit the FanFest and at the same time get to see lots of penguins, and I dont mean in a zoo.
Anyone have any ideas?

Arguing that namechanging would promote griefing is somewhat moot given the current FFA on that front.

a few thousand south?
I take it you mean the southpole / antartic.. but I have it on good authority there are penguins at iceland, specifically there are 5 types of penguin, 1 of which nests in iceland...
Only question is, how long will it take from rekjavik (apologies on spelling)..

Are penguins any good to eat?
Should they be fried, baked, broiled, roasted?

I live in Iceland and not once in my life have I seen a penguin here. The only places I've seen them are Zoo's in the US and Europe.
We don't even have a real zoo, just a barnyard animal thing in the middle of the city, which kind of sucks if you're above the age of 12. If you come to Iceland looking for penguins, you're not going to have much luck. You could however make it a part of your vacation to fly over to Greenland which will meet all your penguin needs. This would however have to be a 1-2 day trip which would lead to you having to extend your vacation.
If you're only visiting for one weekend (arriving early Friday and leaving Monday) my advise is to use the Friday and Saturday taking part in FanFestivities and then going to the Blue Lagoon/Gullfoss/Geysir on the Sunday (and/or using the Saturday morning for that).

considering we are flying from Spain, extending the trip by 2 days so we can see penguins is not out of the question, its a logn way to go from here, so a few more km either way wont make much difference...
I am told at the northern edge of iceland are penguins..

That's probably correct, but that's atleast 4-5 hours drive (or 30 min expensive flight) from Reykjavİk. There's a lot you could do with all that time. When visiting Iceland, though, I do recommend atleast a two-week stay. Rent a car and drive around the country, visit all the tourist attractions, different resturants in different towns etc., if you're only coming for a weekend or 3-5 days, the general Reykjavİk/Southwest corner area is probably the best choice.
One more thing, though. Even though you're only visiting for 4-5 days, don't miss out on going to the Westman Islands. Just south of Iceland, you can either fly (expensive) or take the ferry. You can sign up for one of the tours which takes tourists around the islands and into all the caves that surround them. Beautiful sights to see and you'll have a good time. The town is small and quiet and you'll have no problem finding a place to stay should you want to spend the night. If not the ferry leaves at 4 or 5 PM (I forget). There's also a nice golf course there, if that's your cup of tea.

Well many many thanks for the information, in all probability the way we would do it is either arrive early and then drive to the poenguin location, spend 2 days there and then drive back for the party, or obviously, goto the party then drive out to the location and spend 2 days there or so before heading back..
The question is, where do the damn penguins hide? I am 100% positive they are there, but its such a non regular item that actually getting information on them is really not easy, also Im looking into wether permits are required, are they or the area they in protected in some way? is there restrictions on who can visit and when?
all these things need to be considered..

Edited by: Tanos Elara on 15/08/2005 21:18:05 must admit i'm a little sceptical, the general rule is puffins in the north and penguins in the south, and i've googles it and can find no referance to any native species that live anywhere in the northen hemisphere (including iceland)
edit: look at This
