Problem being is that they have the most to lose when it comes to redesigning and asigning more importance to the standing system in Eve.
Not if appropriate gains are put in place that make it worthwhile to bother.
Well I guess the more pertinent question is, what do you think they would be losing? :)

My two cents,
There are ways you can (mis)use missions to create corp/group events and still have fun. ( a mild form of player created content )
I regularly organize frig-only/destroyer-only sessions to go trough the spy stash or angel extravaganza missions, just because it produces a lot of ratz on demand, which allows your group to practice some essential skills like staying in range, cover your wingman, provide assistance with transfer mods, sniper tactics, tanking, etc...
I dont do the missions to earn money, but to teach others, n00bs love it coz they get loot and some bounties, veterans like it coz its fun to do group events :-), and its challenging to try out things like survive a level3 extravaganza with a tech 1 frig fitted for maximum 1M isk worth of fittings :) , industrial-only events are also fun, and produces some interesting fitting setups..
I have to say i don't like complexes/cosmos at all, because they are known locations anyone can go to at any time, in fact they are camped most of the time by grinders, it makes it impossible to organize any group event around them unless you start right after Downtime.
Having said all that, for solo mission grinders it is boring after a while, and just for them new content would be welcome.

Well, anything lost is twice as punishing in 0.0 space. For example, docking rights with factions you have very negative standing to just to name something.

I have just read it myself and some things sure look great, especially the economy part. The economy in EVE is great, but it could be even better and you give some interesting ideas there.
Wish someone on CCP could read it and let us know what they think of it

I was a WoW beta player but didn't play past beta as the game didn't do much for me.
Isn't the mission system, go to x, kill y, collect z? Whats so interesting about that? I can even remember lots of travelling around the map to do these missions. And, what happens when you finish the story path?
The end.....'what next?' - this is WoW's biggest problem and you want Eve to have it too?
So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. |

Edited by: Pottsey on 18/08/2005 15:48:35 ôelite had ranks with two different factionsö I thought it was 4 or 5 factions you could do missions for depending on how you counted a faction. There are the 3 big empires Imperial, Federation, Alliance then there were all the Independent systems which the game classed as an Independent faction. But I dont recall you being able to get ranks for the Independent faction.
Then you had the options of going to the aliens space and doing mission for the Thargoids or if you are against the Thargoids work for the INRA and kill the Thargoids . Along with all those 1 off story missions from the small factions.
Elite 3 had both randomly generated missions and 1 off pre set storyline missions. Each storyline mission took you down a path so it was impossible to do them all in one game.
ItÆs a shame Eve does not borrow some of Elites best features like permits to go into certain systems like Barnard's Star a religious colony or Rose 128 a prison colony. Along with the suggestions Hakera made like ranks and photograph missions where you fly planet side and take photos of a base you could also later if you got to a high enough rank nuke missions to blow up a ground base. You started with minor letters being taken to system to system and as you rank went up you got better missions.
I also remember if you got extra close on the photograph like 10km away from the ground you got extra points. The medal system was great two. It would be good if you can earn medals in Eve. The other great thing about Elite was if you worked for 1 faction is was harder to get a promotion when working for there enemies.
ôof admiral in my imp courier (the best ship besides the cobra mk III)ö What about the Thargoid ship or the Argent Quest? I personally rate both far in advanced of the imp courier or cobra mk III. Unless you talking about Elite 2 then I preferred the Tiger Trader though the Imp courier was 1 fine ship.
Edit: Another great Elite 3 feature was the crime page. Every commander profile had a crime page split between the empires. If you committed a crime it was logged. IE weapons fire to near a main planet, dumping illegal goods in space and the Federation didnÆt care if you had a bad crime rate with the Imperial faction as long as you didnÆt commit crimes in Federation space. What was against the law change per system.

More mission context would be nice. For me, after doing mostly the same missions for 4 or so months was enough to make them boring. I can enjoy missions only when doing them in group. Atm, when missions are boring and I can't go to 0.0 not much left for me to do. So I strongly support the idea of more NPC content in game.

Your more then likely right Pottsey, it has been nine or so years since I played the game, I played first elite 1-3 but 2 mostly. Anyway the imp courier looked the coolest with its retractable hyperspace engines :)
I dont remember any thargoids actually being ingame, that must be first encounters which I assume is where you get the argents quest from buttering up the thargoids. But I may refresh my memory soon and download the game
Getting back on topic...some sort of ffe type missions would be cool but would require a change in eve physics to make planets...planets. perhaps easier to photograph a structure in space like a defence satelite.

It might be possible there are some planet side as these screenshots are old but from the Eve engine.

I assume if they make it like deadspace no warp and microwarp device then bingo you have your planet side physics for the Elite style missions. The hard part will be making a smooth transactions from Space to planet like Elite.
But good idea, there is no reason not to do recon photograph missions on a defence satellite in space.
But I guess if they ever implant planet side flybys itÆs a long way off.

well elite had rules for gravity and a nasty end if you hit the surface, planets dont exist in eve for all intense purposes, they would like stations or other objects require a collision net the game can recognise and possiblly a more enhanced twitch control (double clicking frantically in an atmosphere just isnt cricket).
Mission wise, recon would be easy enough but would require devs to code in a recon ability with a camera, objects in space will be easier to implement than planet stuff anyway unless perhaps it could be something like deploy a spy satelite for eg.

Not always , there was a bug on some of those missions (discovered in what would have been the hard way, but for the bug), whereby you could fly into the planetary surface. It was great on some of those tougher spy missions when you had hundreds of enemy craft chasing you, to dive below ground level, the enemy would try and follow, but the bug never worked for them.

The devs are trying to move away from npc generated content, and move more towards player generated content. Imagine the day when the mission you accept was put there by another player for something he needs...

... which was a feature that was supposed to end up in Shiva (formal contract system). Would have been nice, but obviously there was something holding them back from releasing it. Coming soon, hopefully :)

Didn't read the entire thread. But... expanding a bit on the OP I think it'd be cool with real storyline missions that run for 1-3 months, are unique, actually finish, no upper boundary to how many that can participate and give out nice and unique rewards.
Depending on how hard they're rated you'll get nicer and nicer rewards and the more people will participate, making it harder to get the best rewards. You can have it like a pyramid with the top being really really hard requiring lots of team effort, running for 3 months, then 2-3 under that that's also really hard but don't reach up to the level of the top one etc.
That'd mean every 3 months a few lucky, hard working sods would get something truly nice and rare (and mayhap even unique ala the impocs), which wouldn't pollute the current market for rare stuff but would open up another path to get your hands on it.
It'd be more like a cross breed of missions and events than anything else. A bit like the caldari race maybe :). I really liked that one.

Edited by: Larsson7 on 22/08/2005 14:13:32 There is a lot of nice developments that could happen in regards to Missions/Storylines.
Scenario 1: Imagine for a moment you call in at your Caldari Navy Agent. He/She tells you that Estamel Tarchon and Tobias Kruzhor have arranged a meeting in a system. They believe the Angel Cartel and Gurista Pirates are going to form an Alliance to make a major assault on "X" System. The Agent, working in tandom with a Republic Fleet Agent randomly pairs you up iwth another pod pilot in order to complete this mission. This pod pilot may well be at war with you or have very bad standings - Can you work together to gain great rewards?
Scenario 2: You call in at your regular Agent. They greet you with news that they are very upset. They recently assigned a mission to pod pilot "X" and they have failed to complete the mission. As a result he has been disciplined by his superiors. The Agent is very upset and tells you that he has "made an arrangement" with a friend in Concord that you may destroy the ship of this bumbling fool. You are set a timeframe of between 2-24 hours (random generator) and your target could be anywhere in the Universe. Rewards would be distributed on the type of ship destroyed so that people could not abuse this by arranging to jump in a shuttle/ibis and get destroyed.
So many other ideas for missions/storylines but will stop there in case these suck

Wasn't there a proper contracting system in the pipe for Exodus which was 'delayed'?
Player generated missions for the win as they have an actual meaning.

So many people miss the point. It's not what you do on the missions, it's the reason you are doing them. The following is something I made up. At it's core is nothing more than go here and do that. However due to the events surrounding go here, do that the mission seems much more exciting.
Part A: There have been reports of theives stealing supplies from station xyz. We have been contacted by an anon. source as to who the culpret might be. I need you to go meet the source, and get more information. He wouldn't tell us his exact location only this clue.
Part B: (having figured out the clue) We must talk quickly or they will be here to capture and execute me. I was hiding in one of the offices in station xyz when I overhead talk concerning plans to steal goods. I managed to grab this peice of paper that tells the location of the warehouse where the goods are being taken to. Report this back to your superiors. *When you are done, mysterious ships appear and attempt to kill the informant. Then turn their attack on you. You can either fight or run.
Part C: You report your findings back to the original mission agent as well as scans of the attacking ships. He reports back that the ships appear to be ancient Jove technology. The odd thing is that in the scan it seemed that many of the ships systems weren't used. The scan also reveiled that the ships have a strange device that is set to allow any ship to jump to a predetermined location. The agent then asks you to take the information to npc mechanic joe on z station.
Part D: Mechanic Joe is amazed at the information presented. He tells you that he can build the device and modify your ship to go to the same place the mystery ships go to. You have to bring him the following materials.
Part E: With the device built and your ship modified you npc superior tells you to go to use a cloaking ship, go to the location, drop a jump beacon, then return. You jump, and find what appears to be an ancient Jove shipyard, but partially active. Upon closer scan you discover it's actually Blood Raiders who have discovered the location and are using the ships to the best of their abilites to sneak into empire space and steal goods. After dropping the beacon you return to report your findings.
Part F: Your superior tells you they have the location mapped and it's a long abandoned area of space just on the border of the Jove Empire. You are now to take a small fleet of ships, jump to the area, destroy the blood raiders, recover the goods, as well as any Jove technology you find.
End mission result: You kill the blood raiders and return the loot. As a result of your outstanding work a new type of experimental ship armor has been developed. As a reward you get to be one of the few to use it. You are also awarded a very nice cash reward.

Missions definitely need to be overhauled. I think city of heroes got it smack on with their mission system. There was a story "Arc" that started from something happening and 10 missions later along that story there was a final "Boss" type mission that you needed to group up to complete usually. You could be doing a few of these arcs at once. I wouldn't mind repeating the story arcs over and over. At least then you would be assured to have 10 different missions before a repeat. --------------------
5, 6, 7, 8! Who do we... uhhh.. I can't think of anything that rhymes with 8! |

I would think its cool to have a slight interaction to the story line. They already do that.
I like where they make you run these missions strictly for standings and they should keep it that way. I dont know about any of these new mission constellations where the agent is not in a station. I hope they make NPC and agent running a small part of the game and never change it.
Keep NPC interaction to minimum make the player content the real pull.
Who cancelled and made you Mr Dictionary? EVE needs quests and other NPC related activities to keep people interested. Not everyone is here to shoot people all day long.
So far player content is crap, almost all the alliances fail to have a decent foreign policy and the names, oh the names... I mean if they can't even get that right.

myself i would rather see them put more time into working out the bugs, ships, 00 space matters & pvp aspects of the game. there is still too much of that work that needs too be done first. worry about the mission runners later.
mission runners are too much relying on missions too get buy in this game. they are sopost too be interacting with players not ai all day, they got it too easy. if all we did all day was run easy missions for coin we wouldnt have much of a player based game too speek of now would we.

I'd just be happy with a little variation in the existing missions, rather than adding further examples of fixed missions... Like maybe a random name generator for some of the named mission NPCs, so I don't have to kill Sangrel Minn (maybe Bob Minn, Fred Minn, or Sangrel Smith instead ) every single time, or give the Damsel a name even if it's just in the mission brief. I'd like to see more variation in the NPC fleets, maybe drop a cruiser every now and then and replace it with a half-dozen frigates instead, or vice versa, or replace a harder battleship NPC with 2 weaker battleship NPCs. Maybe they move the structures around in complexes so they're not in the same place all the time. The idea I saw about moving complexes around space would be good, I think. I'd also like to see rats from second and subsequent spawns of a mission 'warp in' instead of just simply appear out of nowhere, or maybe if you go into a ds complex or mission and get to stage 2 or 3 they get reinforcements arriving via the acc gate at intervals until a specific 'boss' or structure is killed? I'd also like to see active NPC mining ops in Empire space- full blown strip mining ops with haulers warping in and out and faction ships running protection. This could include open jetcans for people to try 'borrowing' from with the risk of the faction NPCs opening fire on the 'thief'. I can imagine a mining corp desperately trying to mine all the Omber in a specific belt before the NPCs get it all instead.
It's the little things... NPC content and atmosphere also. I don't suppose I'm asking too much, am I?

Yes, and CCP realized this, and that it costs them many players, and that's why they implimented more NPC content with Exodus.
If there were 10 "quests" per mission level, each with minor changes for different corps and each quest took two months then theoretically we'd have plenty of content for the forseeable future. Surely enough time to invent the next group of "quests". I'd like the idea of a quest that I could work slowly on while I did other multiplayer things in the mix. Right now I abselutely refuse to do agent missions because as it stands now, each time I've wanted to do one it has been virtually the same mission. CCP will lose players if there is nothing to do but multiplay and the same agent mission over and over. If it's late at night and my friends are logged off my only choice right now is to save that damn damsel again. Why?
We need quests with big prizes at the end. Otherwise there is only room for the dedicated agent runners and then none at all. There is no room currently for casual agent running because all you get is .01 status increas when you get bored enough to rescue the damsel again.
