I am somewhat new to Eve but I was hoping for advice on stopping ore thieves. There are few things more anoyying than a non corp player buzzing up to you as you are waiting for a badger and stealing your ore. Two nights ago my corp and I had to put up with a juvinile ore thief was repeatedly harrasing our mining op stealing our ore, warping out then doing it again. He then had the audacity to demand money to leave us alone. If we were in a low sec system we would have spaced him with Alt Characters, but we were in a .8 and concord were all over us whenever we tried. He had a 0.0 sec status so we could not bounty him and the gimp even followed us around the system.
I know you can, to an extent, defend aginst ore thieves with secure containers (but they don't hold much ore) or having industrials constantly picking up excess ore, but with a small corp this becomes extremely tiresome. What I am hoping for is some advice on how to punnish really persistant ore theives who seem less interested in making money than in really jerking off other players.
If this sounds like sour grapes, it is. Pirates, I can take, you go into low sec systems its a risk you face but thieves, who can't be prosecuted by concord, infact they hide behind concord, need to be taken down. Suggestions please.

Don't be stupid and leave ore around for anyone to take? Wait for practical secure containers to go into the game?
There's no reason to whine about someone taking advantage of your mistakes. When you jettison your cargo it's up for grabs, simple as that. ------

Hmm... the people who steal from you in empire space are thieves, not pirates.
Pirates would get ass-raped by CONCORD -way- before they could warp to your belt, approach your cc, and steal your ore.

Edited by: Bashar on 23/07/2003 20:44:01 Most of them loiter around in bestower or even AFK mine when not actively stealing. Our solution for now is to add them to our list, and when we see one of them sitting around obviously not paying attention, we all log onto or newb alts (or make one if we dont have one in the area)....then one person flys right up to the persons ship, and everyone else warps to him. 5-6 newb frigates can make a nice dent on even someone paying attention before they can escape or get saved by concord...and if they are afk mining or otherwise not paying attention....they are highly likely to end up dead before the police detroy all our newb frigates ;)

thieves should be allowed to steal from you if you eject something into space.
however, you should be allowed to attack them if they choose to pilfer said can.

Right on. Yes they should be alowed to steal the ore, but we SHOULD also be allowed to defend our cans without having to bend over for CONCORD to fire one at us.

Edited by: Morphix on 24/07/2003 02:24:12 Well.. you have to admit, the mining to a container approach is not exactly sanctioned, that's why you jettison stuff, because you don't want it anymore, at least that's how the game sees it, so until we get bigger secure containers, deal with it, or mine in lower sec areas so you can destroy said thieves ================================== Milk, milk, lemonade! As a known ore-thief (total income so far ~80k) I agree that you should be able to shoot me.
But it all revolves around the 'jettison' thing. I believe you even get a confirmation box on attempting now. Concord see it as you throwing it away, so they don't attack people for sifting through your 'garbage'.
secure containers are better, despite their price. And at the moment they are untouchable, unpickable, and after the patch will be bigger on the inside than the outside.
Anyone who dumps ore in space after this patch deserves to be robbed, put simply.
And I'll be the one to do it. Cos I got five kids ta feed, and my no-good husband left me no choice, as he took both my guns, and my mining lasers. All I have left is this big defenceless ship with a big cargohold. _____ sig |

cargo cans in space are fair game,
common curtesy amongest miners goes along way.
but ore in a corp hanger is a different matter all together.
isnt that right morphix, you ****head, dont worry the corp had a good kick up the arse and secrity has been overhauled thanks to you.
your cards been marked morphix, was it qorht 75k omber? and pirate ****.
we will be seeing your corpse very soon. so it will act as a detterant to other new members.
you ****** about with the wrong corp, if you think we will let it lie.
why did you whine like a ***** when we told your new ceo what you did? has he locked you out of there hangers now? does no one in your new corp trust you? ha ha ha

this is what the bounty hunter career was made for. we are finding ore thieving an increasing problem and those characters on the edge of the law now exist to hunt them down...for a price.
more unofficial bounties are popping up from CEOs ****ed with hangar or ore thieves and these are what hitmen are for.
this is an interesting new twist. i think it should be kept going. there should be risk to jettisoning your ore, after all you just dropped it in space for christ sake!

After reading the posts above, and calming down a bit, I think the problem I have is not that people can steal ore (that is a risk I guess you take when you jettison), but that 1. Secure cargo containers are too small 2. That I could not kill someone who was really annoying me and I felt I had total justification to introduce Theif to Vacume, as concord would attack me.
But I suppose on the other hand it was just a player exploiting game rules, in much the same way that us miners exploit the jettison rules. Still if I ever meet the theif in a low sec system I will space the git.

CCP needs to allow a limited number of declarations of War on individual characters if the individual is in a starter corps.
The ore thieves are exploiting game mechanics. Its not the theif its the hiding in the newbie corps that keep us from declaring war and protecting our operation.
Don't give me any crap about it's not mine. I did not jetision it because it did not want it. I jettisioned it because I did not want it in my ship, thats all. And CCP has started working provideing lockable containers, its the same action they are both containers that have been jetisioned.
It is very wasteful, and boring to use one hauler for each miner.
I can except the risk of theft, if the theives can except the risk of being shot at if caught. I might even get an alt and sideline in some ore theft, if I thought miners could shoot at me and there was some risk in it. But right now with these mechanics an ore thief is just a low life expoliter, who would want to be associated with that profession.

I think you should be able to set up a password protected trap on cargo containers. so if the wrong person tries to acess the container, it blows up in their face with enough force to destroy a battleship, without harming the container. This is not a realistic solution, but it is an amusing one. :)

"As a known ore-thief (total income so far ~80k)" 80k? Are we talking bistot units or ISK? I make 80k ISK from mining in 3 minutes, and pirate hunting about 2-3 minutes. The life of a thief must be hard. |

Secure containers are a joke when you mine over 600m3 every minute.

Sokra, One of his members posted in a thread under Eve Corporations... see page below
http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=21596
The member’s name is "Daisy Mae" I come from a very well established corporation with a strong Military force. We along with the corporation, Justice Inc. have declared War on RedNeck Ramage. I would like to suggest that anyone else wanting to take action against them contact
NGRU CEO="NGRU Rix" or "NGRU Storm" Justice Inc. CEO="Serenity"
Perhaps a stronger force can be established to exterminate RedNeck Rampage and all other corporations and factions that would like to take part in the same activities they do. We would like to send a strong message that Thievery and any/all other similar actions taken place in the Domain Region will NOT be tolerated, and will be dealt with harshly. I hope my information of one of the other member’s name is helpful.
Sincerely, Mobious -----------------

Edited by: yarr on 28/07/2003 10:52:41 that's 80k isk.
I don't take much, and I don't hound people. I just need 20-30k every week to feed and medicate my little 'uns*.
Like Mr. Chafe said, ore thieves are just exploiting the rules, just like miners are exploiting jettison cans.
It's all karmic. And stuff.
*If someone donates me 30k before the weekend, I won't have to rob anyone next week
PS. Yes, myself and Drunk were once one happy entity, but times change, people change. Oh, and I totally embarassed him. Thus were are no longer one. _____ sig |

Jack, if you're mining 600m3 a minute, you should go find a place where you can use jettison cans and lay the smack on anyone that comes near you.
That's what I'd do, if I were mining. .
