Simple really:-
Beams = range. If your one of those people that like to sit 170km off gates for instance and snipe people, Beams are for you. Beams high PG requirements suit the Apocalypse better obviously, so if your an Apoc fan, go with them.
Pulse = short range. If your one of those people who likes to just get a covert ops on the sniper, warp in at 10km, scramble and pop them, Pulse is for you. Pulse obviously suit the Armageddon better due to the lower PG and capacitor requirements.
In fleet battles, I'd go with Beams. On an Armageddon. RoF bonus 4tw.
If your running around on your own or small squad, Pulse.
NPCing, Beams are best as you can stay at range.

**Edit** Typos.
beams considering pulses have very very bad range now.

beams fit just fine on geddon. Don't listen to that crap.
geddon:2x rcuII + 6x HS II + dmg bonus + tachs apoc: 1x rcuII + 6x hsII + 1gun more ... sux compared to geddon.

Really depends on the ship, and ur role.
I normally swap between the 2 , and stick to pulse on frigs. Though obviously beams can be made to fit. I generally prefer not to gimp a frigs setup for a little range. Geddon is damn nice with rof bonus , though i still choose Apoc. Give it some lub plz

Reading posts properly 4tw.
I did say that fitting beams on a Geddon was a good idea thanks to the RoF bonus.
Apoc does need lub. +2% damage bonus?

Pulses are good and have better tracking then beams but shorter range should be able to pop cruisers with MP and decent skills.
Beams are longer range but if someone gets under your turrets you are as good as dead. Basically, beams for sniping/long range. Pulse for short range and tanking (less harsh fitting requirements so a better tank)

I use tech2 pulses and have never been happier. But, then i don't play the blob battle thing.
A geddon with 7 MegaPulse 2s can still fit 6 HS2s, 1600 Plate, Sensor Boosters, tracking comp, and med armor rep. All without RCUs. Also, it gives me a 1000+ DPS, and a 30k range (with Multifreaqs). Beams are good for sniping, but pulses are for those things your trying to keep in scramble range.
Oh, beam vs. pulse depends on combat style. Small fleets usually engage targets under 20k, so pulse. Blob or Sniping engage over 30k, so Beam.
GL making a decision.
