Some of us old-timers remember back in the old days, when Torpedos had a blast radius.
It wasn't huge by any means, but it sure made the game more interesting.
Why was the blast radius removed?
Also, would giving Projectiles a blast radius (albeit on a much smaller scale than torpedos) be an interesting addition?
Just off the top of my head:
Torpedos: 5k radius Cruise: 3k radius Heavy: 1k radius Light: 500m radius Rockets: 50m radius
Possible balance could be established by adding a new missile type (or making tech II variants use the blast radius formulae)
Projectiles *could* get a similar treatment, however the explosive radius would be far less, almost to the point of being "flak" type rounds, which do far less damage but have a far better area of coverage.
Finally, I know there is folks that will have some pretty strong feelings against losing damage, but you'd need it for balance purposes.
Also, I remember the "damn, that asshat piloted his alt into the explosion radius of my torps" issues that used to pop up during empire wars. That would have to get solved.
Anyone think Eve could be made a little more fun with this kind of stuff?
Discuss.

They solved it already... by removing the blast radius... But realy, I don't see the use for a blast radius, it only tends to damage the ones you don't want to damage while doing less damage to the ones you do want to damage... ---

Come up with that solution, and you might have an idea. Until then, the rest is a purely academic excersise.

So, if i understand, missiles should work as smartbomb when they detonate... It seems a rational idea. Up

Yeah, it kinda would. Considering that unintentional damage was the reason blast radius was removed in the first place, it would be kinda neccesary. Until you have a solution to that significant problem, there is no point discussing this.

I had thought about making the blast radiuses bigger, but I was thinking that making huge blast radiuses could get unbalanced.

well, I for one would like to see rl physics become an integral part of the game as far as it goes. Super Superluminal speeds, warping, star jumping or whatver the favoured terms are is not a technological concept we couldnt even begin to imagine how to develop technologies for today, but we have a vague hint of it perhaps being possability in a distant future - thats what I mean with rl and 'beleivable' physics...

I remember splash damage and why it was removed. Any BS in Empire could not be engaged with missiles as they always kept a n00b alt within 500m of their ship. As soon as splash hit the n00b, the attacker got Concordokkened.
I know it makes sense to have an explosive radius (especially seeing the graphic from a torp explosion), but in game play terms it's not good for the exploitable reasons that saw splash damage removed before.

I can't remember which dev it was, but one of them said that the added server load from it these days would be crazy and that it would never go back in

Actually, the more I thought about it, I started imagining new players in their Bantams getting smoked by concord for hitting another player with the blast radius of a missile...
I know it kind of flies in the face of the quasi-realism we enjoy uin Eve, but maybe splash damage is limited to 0.4 and below, or to War Targets?
Like perhaps each launcher is programmed to not detonate each missile to its full capacity within empire core systems to avoid collateral damage?
But then again I think the coding involving that would probably be a nightmare.
But it's possible, right?

Let's not go back to the days of having your own missiles destroy other missiles, damaging you, or annoying Concord.
Missile users today think that they have it hard, but it's nothing compared to the situation two years ago.

Explosion radius got taken out because of server strain. EVE can not have real life physics because the server has to do all the calculations, as the client is in the hands of the enemy.
