I often read the BBC news website, and over the years have noticed an increase in their coverage of MMORPGs, in fact there is usually at least one or two news items about them per month if not more. Without going into the merits and failings of WoW (3.5m subscribers!) Everquest 2, SWG, and Guildwars - these are the only ones that ever seem to make the news.
I'm slightly suprised that they haven't picked up Eve as the biggest persisent single shard online Universe. Eve is also particularly interesting for being such a large Universe that is shared by lots of different cultures and languages.
So maybe as a dedicated Eve player, im slightly blinkered, but how well known is Eve out there? |

Must be those shades
I'm sure I saw Eve mentioned in a BBC article before. But it doesn't bother me really, I don't want Eve to become mainstream because the mainstream is 80% jackasses. See WoW for evidence

I think Eve is still pretty much a niche option for most gamers.
Unlike most other MMORPG's, Eve doesn't really deliver any instant gratification from killing things. To start with it can be a long and lengthy process of nursing your character through a training regime and coming up with a way to earn a healthy wage to do bigger and better enterprises.
If you can appreciate the depth that Eve offers and have the patience to persist, then you'll easily get back as much as you put in.
As someone wisely once said 'Eve is less like a game and more like a filter, all the intelligent people end up staying and the idiots quit. It's cool.'
