Is there any way to warp a certain distance, like going 1,000,000 km from a jumpgate? My thought was to bookmark a point a little shy of gates in low-sec space so I can stop and see what's there, instead of getting hammered by warping in blind.
I know you can stop 100km short, but that would still put you in range of someone camped at 60km from a gate, no?

You can make a bookmark mid-warp and then warp to that or drain your cap so that you won't warp all the way to your destination, but you cannot warp to empty space without a bookmark.

Its easy to run out of cap by repeatedly warping or using a shield booster, and then warp. If you do it just right, you can get the hang of it quickly. -- Proud member of the [23].

Just wait until you are slowing down in the "dropping out of warp phase" and make a bookmark.
See how far away you are from the gate. Use scanner to see what is at the gate.

If you just want to scan the for campers, you can try warping to a moon or planet close by. Then set the scan range to max. This will not work all of the time but it may be worth a try.

Yup, set to max, point at stargate. Works 99% of the time. -- Proud member of the [23].

Just a question on scanners while it's mentioned; I see the scan icon on my interface and I know that I can input a distance, click scan to get a list of different ships, asteroids, etc., but are there items that can be added to improve the scan (not that I need it right now, but just curious), and does the max scan range depend on the gravimetric sensor strength on the ship (11 points on merlin)?
Sorry for slightly going off-topic, but I figure it's useful to know to protect the "newbies" in the game (myself included) against gate campers :)

Edited by: Alex Kynes on 27/08/2005 17:24:40 Check 'use overview settings' right next to where you imput the range. It will then use your current overview config. Whatever your overview shows, the scanner will show. I hope you know how to change those.

Thanks for the feedback. Yep, I know how to use the overview settings, but what I'm really trying to figure out is if I'm missing something as far as the scanner's use. Basically, does it have more functionality than just an increased range of sensors compared to my overview list? And is maximum sensor range dependant on ship, equipment and skills?

Edited by: Alex Kynes on 27/08/2005 17:48:13 Nope. All ships have the same sensor range, something around 20AU I think. You can set the "width" of the scan arc in degrees, where should be pretty obvious once you open the scanner window. You can also change the direction of the scan by simply moving your camera around your ship. That's about it. Play around with it, scanner is a nifty thing.

Thanks for the info Alex, and you're right, like most things in this game, the best way to figure things out is to just experiment with it a little.
