When flying a larger ship (cruisers and larger), what are some good tactics for fighting drones?
I know about larger turrets moving slower, thus having a more difficult time hitting targets with higher radial velocities. Thus, the further away a fast moving drone is, the slower it's radial velocity is than if it is close to you (radial_velocity = tangential_velocty / distance). Thus, when using bigger turrets against smaller, fast-moving targets, always engage them from the max range of your guns (~optimal_range up to fall_off beyond optimal_range). If these fast-moving targets get close, bigger turrets will miss virtually every time.
However, sometimes, since larger ships move slower, drones can sometimes get close to you, especially when there are so many that some get close before you can destroy them all. And you can't get proper distance between you and the drones because they move so much faster. So here's where the real question comes in. Once these drones get close, what should you do? Below I have listed the options that I see available, but I'm not sure which ones are most effective and which ones have unforeseen drawbacks.
(1) Use stasis webbifiers to slow down the drones while you put some distance between you and the drones?
(2) Use microwarp drives to speed up and put some distance between you and the drones? I realize MWD's and afterburners increase your signature radius, but when fighting smaller targets, does it really matter that an already big target has effectively become bigger?
(3) Use smartbombs (btw, i realize these will do damage to your own nearby drones and allies, as well)?
(4) Use your own drones (although, some ships can't carry a lot of drones, especially Caldari ships)?
(5) Do target painters help you hit close drones better?
Thanks in advance for the feedback and help!

If you mean NPC drones. 1) try to stay at range 2) smartbombs or drones
Out of my own experience I can say that even in lvl 3 deadspace missions no drone survives long enough even in deathspace to do more then a bit of shield damage even when it s a swarm.
Only `tough`mission is the mercenary room in silence the informant that one gets through shields.
Flying passive shield/active armor domi.

Against player drones, smartbombs are your best bet except when in a small ship. I've found its always a great idea to put a smartbomb in that "extra slot" on your battleship--the enemy will fly their drones at you, you slam it, they all blow up. THEN you launch yours -- Proud member of the [23].

Drones are nasty little buggers. The best way to fight drones in general are smartbombs. Other then that a good combo is small guns+webber+target painter. Or a variation of those.

On my cruiser (rifter in my case), I like to have 3 med arty (720's), 2 reg missile launchers (each loaded with a dif missile type to enhance damage potential) and an auto cannon for when stuff gets close into me. I also use afterburners to keep my distance as best as possible.
