Some say that to appreciate what one has, one may need to try something else. I have played Eve Online now for 5 years, and I was kind of looking for something else to do... just something different. So I decided to try Guild Wars 2, since I have played the original and liked it. I also had read how ArenaNet was going to try to use Eve Online Markets as a model for their Trading Post. Unfortunately, I got sucked into the hype and ended up shelving the game.
Next I tried Planetside 2. I had tried Dust-514 and it just did not stick to me... mostly because it was on the PS3. PS2 is not a bad game, but then SOE [as usual, from what I understand] showed its greed and screwed over the very players that were spending the most on the game... oh well.
For both games, I used the information that the developers were looking to CCP for their player-oriented design model for their games. ArenaNet failed, and SOE may be failing as well.
Now this does not mean I have always agreed with CCP and their decisions for Eve Online... so do not think I am a CCP 'rah-rah'. Hell, there has been more than once when I questioned why the hell I was playing this damn game... but as long as I was able to maintain the subscription, I was willing to spend one more month. SOE actually has tried to listen to their players, but they appear to be falling all over themselves. Information is scattered and sometimes contradictory. When things start to go downhill, they just clam up and pretend nothing is wrong. Funny thing, is I do not feel that way with CCP.
I posted on the PS2 Forums...
"One of the developers of Eve Online made a statement that CCP did not own the gameGǪ the players did. All that CCP did was provide the environment and tools for the players to create their own worlds. At this point, I believe this because I have felt it. I was hoping to feel that way here as well."
Well, it only took three months for me to question PS2 true colors in this regards.
I also posted...
"That does not mean that I do not think SOE is trying. They are, as they have used our feedback to create new stuff. I just have a gut feeling that SOE is having a hard time following the player-oriented design model. I feel sometimes it is forced, where CCP just goes out and has a beer and eats shark's heads with the players. I want to believe, but that trust has to be earned."
Now, I have not gone to any of the Eve Online gatherings, or met anyone who is working for CCP, or anyone who plays Eve Online for that matter. I am 63 years old and I just do not think that most of the Eve Online players and CCP staff are compatible with this old man. But I find it interesting that I still feel part of the Eve Online community, which I just have never felt with any other game. I have lasted 5 years here, where the most I have lasted at another game is 2.5 (have been playing online games since 2001... please do not ask how many).
So I just want to thank CCP for doing a job well done. They may be a bunch of beer drinking (made from fart-water), shark head eating, crazy people... but at least they help me feel part of something, even when I am not and they do not know me from a hole in the wall.

P.S... If the rumor that SOE is looking to buy out CCP is true... then I guess I will just have to learn to play golf. |

It seems to be the 'in' thing right now.
Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |
