All missiles and rockets are now just too weak and not even a reasonable choice of weapons if you are filthy rich.
List of shortcomings:
They haven't got enough range (most medium turret weapons go much further, not even mentioning the heavy ones!)
They still don't do enough damage, especially when ROF is taken in account. The low missiles don't do enough damge, the big ones are launched to slow. Almost every medium gun and even some small guns do several times more damage then both in the same time and even at a way lower cost.
They are way to slow since a lot of ships can outrun even the faster light missiles (and don't even start about the torpedos) and by the time the missiles have reached the enemy you are likely already killed by his turretfire which hits instantly.
The ROF and launcher capacity of all launchers is too low (resulting in the ROF dropping even more dramatically when you have to reload all the time)
Remember were talking here about weapons that can carry payloads way bigger then any round (it's outrageous that a medium hybrid round does most of the times more damage then a light missile), they have way more intelligence then dumb rounds and still are expensive (well compared to the hybrids and projectiles ofcourse). But people don't even care about carrying countermeasures since they laugh about missile damage anyway and hardly anyone uses them.
Another problem is that they can only deliver one type of damage and often this is either no longer necessary in case of thermal or emp due to the fact the massive damage the turrets have inflicted by the time the slow-ass missiles have reached their target. And it makes timing very important for the other missiles.
Also rockets should be be inproved even more then the other types of missiles. They should be lowcost dumb missiles supposed for delivering massive damage to slowmoving big targets in a short time by frigates just shooting a ****load of them at the target at close range.
Though this is atm just not possible because the lauchers that fire fast enough for this can hardly carry a reasonable amount of rockets and the the ones that do fire way to slow. Also the damage rockets do, taking these factors in account is just a joke. When thinking of rockets try think of Apaches using their Hydra rocket pods. It's is their most devastating weapon they can carry by far.
I think missiles are supposed to be the best weapons there are IF YOU CAN AFFORD THEM. You aren't paying that much for ineffective ships or ineffective weapons if it means getting blown to pieces by turretfire.
In real life air-to-air missiles cost enough for a family to life wealthy for years, not to mention the bigger ship-to-ship ones which are even worse. But still almost any missile is supposed to immediately finish it's target off at once. So insta-kill for a big pile of money. I know this is not how it should be in EVE but curently it's not even coming close to a realistic, balanced situation.
I guess CCP will wet their pants when they think of how improving the damage, the range, the speed and ROF of missiles will unbalance the game. But they should not forget it's nor balanced, nor realistic how it's now, and I think this entire group of weapons is more easily balanced then the other ones since in this case increasing the ammunitions price is a very good tool with even more positive results.
So pirates will not use missiles often since they can't afford to blow the money on every prey. Piratehunters then oufcourse could. Giving them the edge they so badly need.
Also this will give the market a good stimulance by finally opening the market of missile production. And it will finally allow selling looted missiles.
Also this will then likely force corp to contact outside suppliers in case of corpwars since they are not likely to keep the minerals up to demand for producing the missiles.
And the proof all missileweapons are too weak: Even players/corps that have money to burn and are fighting serious battles will never use missiles other then as a louse secondary weapon. Ships like the Caracal are supposed to be able to take down almost any ship if equipped to the max, ofcourse this is then costing millions a fight. But this is not how it's now. Ships like the Caracal, Kestral, Inquisitor and the Breacher are now all rotting in hangars. --- soonÖ |

I second that. Arguments are mostly valuable. |

You have to remember that you are useing lvl1 missles. The lvl5 ones are probably going to do ALOT more dmg for a lower cost (if you have a BP)

yeah right Tech 1 missiles are supposed to suck till Tech 5 is out then? Then you will see Tech 5 Large turrents blowing up crusiers in 1 salvo and you will just say: " think about the missiles they are only Tech 5, just wait till Tech 10 and they will do the damage" Absolutely amazing point.

My former corp had a tech5 Piranha print due to some bug, early in Live.
The only increase was the damage, from 40 to 70.
And that's tech5!!! So you really shouldn't expect too much from this.
Besides, don't forget we will get better guns too, so missiles will remain a bad choice. --- soonÖ |

I totally agree. Jack the price and production costs of missiles dramatically and increase the damage. It's pretty sad when a medium projectile BULLET can do more damage than a missile with a nuclear warhead.

The main problem is ROF, or lack of modules that reduce ROF. A arma can do 100+ damage a gun firing just over every 2 seconds so thats like 600 damage in the time it takes a large arb to reload. To come close you have to equip torps which are realy slow.
What ends up happening is the gun does over 1000 damage before the torp even reaches the target. The rate of fire for missiles should depend more on the pilot judging if he will blow his own missiles up or not before hitting the target. That or make the AOF of missiles huge like say the size of a smart bomb so they would be good against goups of targets.
