How difficult is it to move illegal goods through space? Is it just a question of staying in low-sec systems?

I've heard it depends more on how much youre moving.
But i have no first hand knowledge.

Ideally I want to move 1600 units of slaves (4800 cubic metres).
I suppose I could make several trips with a smaller load (and a faster ship).

i moved about 1000 of these a few nights ago, but i did a test run first and made 'instas' that allowed me to hop into a system and then warp within 100m or so of the target station and board very quickly.
not sure how it works or even what happens, but i did think the jig was up when a "customs major" (or something close) suddenly appeared out of no where just in front of my ship - luckily i was just a few hundred m from the gate and i jumped almost as soon as he appeared
this might be COMPLETE chance as i'm still a n00b and know no better, but, i have to say that even though it was time consuming to figure out the run, make the instas, then go back and load up and repeat the run in a slower ship, it was the most i've felt like a smuggler in any game (including SWG, where i've been a smuggler for almost two years without ever having smuggled a damn thing)

I tried smuggling recently also. I moved spirits from Oursaulent to a station in Verge Vender in a fast cruiser without any interferance from customs. I enjoyed the thrill of smuggling contraband and made a hefty profit.

Say that when the Customs agent tells you to stop for a talk ...

just out of interest, what DOES happen? do they freeze you in place, or can you try and escape them?

Well i once picked up roughly 10mill in contraband gear off a mission, didnt realise i had it in my hold till i docked.
I went through 4 systems and docked a station with 15 customs officers orbiting and not one did a thing.
But i think that if they were to stop you i would imagine they would demand that you jettison it so they can confiscate it. ---- Join Us

I'm mapping out a route in advance that stays primarily in low-sec space once I'm outside of Amarr territory. And I'm placing insta-jump bookmarks wherever I see law enforcement.
Wish me luck.

I pick up contrabrand on missions and take it back to my base. Not usually large quantities.
I have been stopped once, asked if I would hand over the goods and pay a fine or be destroyed. Chose to hand over the goods (which involved jettisoning them). Was fined about what the goods were worth and took a .015 security hit.
No idea what happens if you run. It doesn't make sense for it to count as an exploit if you escape (as with other Concord actions), but I assume it is.
I imagine it all scales up if you have a lot of contraband on board.

There is a skill. 'Black Market Trading'. It gives you (with full training) a 50% to not be spotted with illegal goods. I've never used it. But it looks useful.

Well, I successfully moved 1600 slaves (which I bought for 965K) into Caldari space and got over 5 mil for them.
I like this smuggling thing.

Good question. For some reason, the illegal activities in this game seem a lot more interesting than just mining..
