Another spin on the locking of gates.
If your corp owns a space and likes to "lock" the doors, so that nobody can get in or out. Perhaps you like your privacy, you have a big mining op, you are paranoid or whatever.
If you own the system in question, then the gates would change, adding a space (cargo) to it and an interface to say "lock" / "unlock". Or an item to place near the gate to "lock" it, I'm thinking SBU kinda item thingie.
The key would be some sort of consumable, example ice products - perhaps racial specific. Eg an Amarr gate requires Amarr ice, some expensive product (ferrogel, morphite, stront or likewise).
Pending on the consumption rate, you would have a time-limited lock on the gate. Eg nobody enters or leaves. There would still be ways in: - having a cyno alt in before the lock (heard of cyno jammer), - wormholes would be the 2nd option, - 3rd option would be that ppl on the outside to overload the gate (shooting, jumping, hacking) and hence increase consumption rate and hence reduce time-limit.
It would give you some precious time for the industry side of things, rebuild lost ship, modules, consumables.
It would require you have some sort of sovereignty over the system in question. After being locked you wouldn't be able to refuel it, until you unlock it. Due to the size restriction of the fuel space, you wouldn't be able to have an indefinite lock. Perhaps starting at a 6hour limit, you'd still have 18h unlocked, but you'd have some time to go on.
If you are invading somebody else space you wouldn't be able to lock the doors while you "take care of things" as you don't yet have any sov over the system. |

No, this is a anti small to med gang roaming. Which is counter intuitive to eve at the moment, we want more roaming fleets, not less.
Gang goes down a pipe, a previious gate gets locked, 2 jumps ahead a huge fleet jumps in and locks the gate.
What now? log out your entire fleet for.. 6 hours? |

No. I would suggest that instead you use the existing "bums on seats" mechanic. |

um... Eve is an MMO!
If you want to lock down a system while you carebear in 0.0, then pack enough people to gatecamp the gates.

Though it would add strategic importance to systems for sov holders, it would create bad situations for smaller entities.
If it can be implemented in a way that, like the posts above, will not hinder small gang warfare then so be it. |

As interesting of an idea as this is, I'm going to have to say I can't support it.
This would be completely and utterly counter-intuitive to what EVE is trying to do, and that is rebalance things to promote more small-gang warfare and small-gang roaming fleets. And just think of how this would be abused by large alliances (especially the Goons). They'd lock multiple fleets into a two jump radius, and then bam, drop a super-cap fleet on them and kill/pod everything.
If you want people to carebear in 0.0, I too agree with having the forethought enough to bring enough people to gatecamp a system and/or post up security around the operation itself. Bad idea. Promotes risk-free botting in null sec. Six months in the hole... it changes a man. |

Not if the "Lock" only limits the amount of mass before it gets completely locked and regenerates every "x" min or once one gets completely locked, a second one would see that mass limit be free again and this could open for more tactics while let real miners do some stuff in null/low, exclude this from high sec. This would bring new "Corporation/Alliance" skills very long and expensive to train, would require fuel.
OC single gate systems should be excluded from this mechanic.
Wouldn't break the game, would bring new tactics, you could still use cyno alts, miners should have to "work" for a clear system before go on their mining op's and should still need "babby sitters" but at least they would have a better chance to do stuff.
Just an opinion |

It's null sec. It's supposed to be dangerous. You're trying to turn it to Disneyland: Asteroid Adventures. Six months in the hole... it changes a man. |
