Ello all..
The problem - Successfully ransoming a target without them simply stalling whilst calling for backup. Most often this leads to simply destroying someones ship and hoping for some decent loot, but often this results is poor financial gain and both parties lose out.
Ok, whilst reading one of the other threads in this forum, someone had the idea of a mod that draws straight from a targets wallet. Whilst having direct access to someones hard earned funds isn't the cleanest of ideas, something like it could be employed.
How about a mod that allows you to sap form the targets ship insurance? Whilst activated it slowly saps down their insurance policy transfering it directly to your account. If you then destroy the ship the money automatically gets transferred back to the target as if they were receiving a normal insurance payout.
Potential benefits - piracy becomes profitable without the need of destroying every single target seen. I know alot of people enjoy destroying others ships, but others are in it just for the money.
Maybe the mod will only work when the target ship is into hull damage? This would stop you warpign onto someone, engaging for 20 seconds to nick some money, then warping off - as you'd actually still have to engage in a fight, be flagged and all the rest.
Potential problems - leeching the system for money, whereby you use an alt to sap your insurance from your ship, then rebuy insurance. As insurance payouts are more than their cost, this would enable the player to make money simply form using the mod on his alt - so maybe have a 1 day limit on being able to buy insurance for a ship thats been ransomed (after all, you have just had your ship saved).
Another issue would be if a pirate gets a ransom from a target, then quickly gives the money to his alt, then destroys the target anyway. now, as the pirate has no money in his account, nothing can be transferred to the target. Not sure how to get around this without some form of debt system, whereby the target still gets his insurance payout, but any money the pirate makes is taken by concord until his debt is paid off.
This system might make ransoming more viable, so add an extra depth to the game.
Just a noobs thoughts on a part of the game he's only just started toying with, so please any thoughts or opinions welcome.
Note - Sorry for any typos, night shifts are killers...

Why not just a communication jammer? Can't call for back up then and you get more time to ransom them.

this one seems easier to code. I like. Edit: then again it would be exploitable as well.
"LOLOLOL I HAVE U COMM JAMMED FOR 2 HOURS AND WARP SCRAMMED AS WELL! :D!"
Youd have to give it a good timer, like 10 mins of noncomm, and then youd need to have a cooldown of 10 mins or so, to prevent it from just being spammed on a person.
That way you have the 10 mins to just get him into hull and giggle... and he has 10 mins to think "hmmz... I should just pay raz."
Sorry for thread hijack Im babbling again.

If the guy is stalling. You just kill him and move on. Plenty of fish in the sea to ransom. Now we don't have to worrie about fish just dissapearring in the ocean due to the new logout option y ou can't take.

must say i agree with famine cant take more then 20 seconds to pay and if u have not by that time then u go pop its a very simple and fast task to perform but also some ppl choose not to pay ransoms coz they have to much honor/pride to do so and i dont say i would agree with them but its still their option and should stay that way ...

You're being too soft on your target. My ransoming technique is "I'm going to start firing at you now, pay X amount or I won't stop."
Let's see 'em stall THAT. _________

Definatly al fair points. Wasn't sure if the idea had any merit or not, just something that popped into me head and wanted to throw out there.
Do think the comms jammer is simply going to be made redundant by teamspeak et al though, although in theory its a very neat idea.

Well there is no problem.
The backup will always be more then 2 minutes away, and thats more time then you need to kill the guy.
Either the guy have money or he dont, if he wants to pay, he will pay right away in a sec or 2, if he dont, he dont. blow him up, he woud rather loose his ship, then paying isk to an *******.
I cant see the point in why it shoud be changed, when the system works fine as it is.
I have never payed a ransom, you dont save anny money on it, it cost around 20-25m isk to loose a bs, and cost 10m-20m to save it. The money it cost, is made on 30 minutes on mining whit my alt.

I wouldn't mind a mod to allow me to see how much the target has in his wallet.. it seems strange that so many folks I catch only have 200k to their name And it does always sem to be @200k.. is this a carefully calculated figure intended to produce the optimum amount of sympathy in their captor? The other day someone claimed to only have 596k.. I was so shocked by this original amount that i let the guy go |
