Can someone explain to me about tanking. I hear the terms "we need a tank" or "got to build my tank up". What exactly does that mean?

Tanking is building up your ships natural armour or shield resistances so you take less damage.
Once you have taken damage you repair it through a shield booster or armour repairer.
As a general rule a ship with more mid slots is suited to shield tanking. More low slots and armour tanking is the way to go.
A typical shield tank will have a couple of hardners and a shield booster. (Hardners increase resistances)
A typical armour tank will have a couple of hardners and an armour repairer.
Good cap recharge is necessary to run a "tank". For armour tankers its normally cap rechargers or capacitor power relays.
Shield tankers use power diagnostic systems.

It can be a couple things. There are armor tanks and there are shield tanks. When someone tanks, it is usually when they can take a lot of damage. Some ways they can do this is through shield extenders or armor plates. Another way is through shield and armor hardeners, which increase the damage resistance so they will take less damage. One thing that is usually used with the resistance increase is the use of shield boosters and armor repairers.
Most often, a typical tank has 3 hardeners to cover the 3 weakest damage types and a booster/repairer to replenish it. It is advisable to be a shield or armor tank only, as doing both might be pointless and take up valuable slots, CPU or Powergrid that can be used for guns. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

The term 'We need a tank' usually applies to mining operations. Ask in rookie help for more info.

Yeah, some people may use the word "tank" to mean tanker, as in oil tanker... In that case, "we need a tank" probably means "we need an Industrial ship to take all these minerals we mined to the station."

Um, nobody says that. It is usually "indy" or "hauler". -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

A 'tank' on a ship is an armour repairer + Hardeners Or a shield booster + hardeners depending on ship/fitting.
A tank for mining is a ship that holds the NPCs attention while everyone else mines in peace. (\_/) (O.o) (>o<) Bunny's too tight to mention... |
