Hi!!
Lesson 4 of 5. As always, this is intended as a guide for the new player considering a career in ore relocation, I'm not presuming to teach experienced players how to suck eggs!!
The previous lessons can be found here:
Lesson 1 - Why do it?
Lesson 2 - Fitting your Hauler
Lesson 3 - Finding your prey
OK then....staying safe. Firstly I have to acknowledge that there are some adventurous pilots in my line of work who are flying transport ships around low sec stealing ore. I have to admit I like their style but as this is a guide for beginners I won't dwell on that aspect.
Of course, not all ore thieves care much about whether they lose their ship or get podded but then unfortunately there are a lot of disposable alts out there. A self respecting thief should care as much about their chars life and death as any other role player (but more on that in Lesson 5)
OK then.....my top tips for staying safe:
Add your victims to your address book and set negative standing with them and their corp. Make notes on who you steal from, when and where. Players have long memories and will happily kill you long after you've forgotten them and their ore. If you set low standings you can see at a glance in space who may pose a threat to you and by adding them to your address book they will be highlighted in local chat. When you enter a system check local for any of the above.
Keep quiet in local until someone spots you and starts conversation / name calling. The reason is two fold: Miners will haul their ore in as soon as a well known thief arrives in the system but some may continue mining and call up their buddies to gank you.
Be mindful of the security level of the system you are in. Concord will attack anyone who fires on you in 1.0 to 0.5 but there is a marked difference in their response times the lower you go. In 0.6 and 0.5 someone can get a few good shots in before the cavalry arrive.
Don't fit cargo expanders!! They slow you down and take loads of hit points off your structure. Fit shields and shield boosters. You can get a couple of thousand shield points on an Iteron 5 and can withstand most of the angry miners opportunistic assaults until Concord arrive. Carry expanders in your hold and fit them when you feel absolutely sure there's no threat (cough macro miners cough)
Think hard before you revisit a can. Even though the owner may not be cursing you in local he could well be in corp chat planning a surprise for you with his buddies. Ideally, make one hit and move on, leaving the system.
Don't hang around the same system, or even the same sector of space, all the time. Occasionally just move 15 jumps away from where you've been hanging out. Even if someone's using a locator agent to find you, you're hard to pin down if you're always on the move. Be careful of the people who befriend you and don't trust anyone emphatically. I still lie to 90% of the people I consider friends in game when they ask me where I am.
Avoid systems with only one station. If you must work there then leave the system to refine your takings. Single station systems can lead to some unpleasant Kestrels camping outside. Keep your eye on local...players will try to hold you up in idle banter while they call in their mates. Don't let yourself get distracted.
Right.. last couple of points and this is where I haven't taken my own advice in the past but my reasons will be explained in Lesson 5:
Stay in an NPC corp...No fear of war decs.
Don't get your sec status low enough for a bounty to be put on you. Big bounties make you worth the loss of more valuable ships and will attract paid bounty hunter corps.
Coming soon, the 5th and final lesson, Ore theft etiquette.

juat a little guestion... cant you join a oretheifs npc corp and kill them anywhere ?
corp members in space would be rather usefull then and negate your nomad-tactic ?
if it works the same way as in a normal corp

Nope, NPC corps are exempt from the "attack your corpmates without penealty" rule.

" I still lie to 90% of the people i consider friends in game..."
You know I'm not gonna call you a bad person in real life, but I think people's IRL personalities tend to come out in games(as they would in anything) and lying to people who have trust in you in the game is just wrong.(So get some new ore thief friends who don't care where you are!)

You do know they can fire upon you freely now when you steal from them, don't you?
