Hello everyone,
in the past weeks I have been working on a web-based tool for New Eden capsuleers. I want you to have a look at it, test it, and provide me honest (but polite) feedback, suggestions, or any other issues you may find.
It's an Google Maps-like attempt to map New Eden. It is in a presentable state, but as with practically any software, it's not complete. I gladly want to expand the mapping tool with features, but for that I want to know what you guys want to see in it.
So. Here's me, doing an introduction of the tool. Introducing: EVE Maps
And here's the tool itself: EVE Maps v1.0.1
Looking forward to your feedback. |

It's very slow to load.....i mean.....slow. :L
How do you see this tool being used? Or is this just a "because I can do it" type app at which point it doesn't really matter? |

Good idea, but the site is too slow!
It is too slow for the following reasons.
- The map is over 600kb big on each load and seems to get larger on each zoom in..
- The page is built around statis screenshots by the looks of it, amd each zoom refreshed the page.
- You need to get some sort of caching going on.
- Good luck!
When looking at maps for eve the user is not bothered about how the map is styled, they just want to get hold of information quicky and simply. .. |

Suggestion:I suggest that you load everything at the first load, provide the user with a loading bar if nessary. Then use Jquery to zoom in parts of the maps and display data etc. When looking at maps for eve the user is not bothered about how the map is styled, they just want to get hold of information quicky and simply.
Hi NickyYo,
thanks for the feedback. You're right, it gets relatively big on the larger zoom stages. It is, however, not designed for mobile use (in the moment).
I will see if I can implement some kind of caching solution. I have tried to implement a mechanism in which lines are drawn dynamically, but this proved to be very slow. Maybe I'm just doin it rong.
I'll keep working on it though. |

I've just checked your new tool, and came to the same conclusion as the others;
- Very very very slow.
- Google Maps approach is bad, as the EVE systems have a different 'height', making them hard to track in 2D.
- Users want to see all the important stuff easy and fast. No need to load the whole map in a browser application when you want to check out statistics and whatnot about a system.
Dotlan's still my choice. |
