I'm going to try a simple Miner to get some cash, etc and get the "feel" of EVE.
Which Skills will be most important for it? I don't intend to fight, except self-defense. Drones? Engineering?
I was thinking of a Caldari Detitis... for its Engineering, etc |

If you are interested to take on the career as a miner, there are a few skills to help you in your endeavors.
Mining: Increases your yield with mining lasers. Refining: Decreases the loss of minerals during the refining process. Refining Efficiency: Decreases the loss of minerals during the refining process. *Note: This is only needed once you reach a skill level of 5 with Refining. Astrogeology: Increases your yield with mining. *Note: This should be obtained through character generation. Mechanic: Will allow you to fit expansion modules to your ship. (Additional cargo room)
With the above skills you should have your basic grounds covered. Because many of these skills are in the Industry areas, it would be recommended to have a decent memory level (attribute).
After you have become skilled you can continue to develop by expanding into drones to further your mining capabilities.

First off, customize your character, do not choose the prefab miner selection. If you do, you won't get astrogeology which is creation only skill atm and a must have for any efficient miner. Engineering does not offer any advantage to mining per say, so forget that notion.
Any race-bloodline can get astrogeology by choosing the middle school and following science tree. Even if it was available as a purchased skill, it is a rank 3 skill which would be more expensive to buy and take longer to train, so always a good idea to specialize a skill you want/need and is higher rank.
Gallente Gallente is the best choice for mining initially, because as a race/bloodline/ancestry you pick up scout drone and mining skill. Scout drones can defend while mining in many mid-high security systems. Also the Navitas is the only ship that grants a mining bonus and is a Gallente ship which would be your first upgrade from a rookie ship.
