Edited by: Nyphur on 04/09/2005 13:17:50 I've had this problem for as long as I've had the card. Every 20 minutes or so playing eve, my computer locks up. When I switch AGP read and write off, it solves the problem but makes my expensive Radeon9600XT run like my old GeForce4MX. I'm not content to have paid a hundred quid for a graphics card that gives no performance increase over the one I was previously using so I was wondering if anyone had experience with this problem and could perhaps help?
Some information. I'm running an Athlon 64 3000+, 768megs PC2700DDR and the Radeon 9600XT (catalyst 5.6 drivers, I believe) on a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro motherboard (nForce 250 chipset). The lockup sometimes consists of the computer stalling for 10 seconds or more and then the monitor turning off and on with a VPU recovery error, often turning back on at 800*600, the default resolution for the Catalyst drivers. Most of the time, however, the lockup consists of the monitor turning off and the keyboard locking up, as well as my network cutting out (I can tell because I was streaming music to another computer on the network). I have downloaded all the latest updates for the nForce chipsets and such, but they didn't solve the problem.
Now, for some reason, when I try to use 24bit colour in Eve, it shows everything in 256 colours. Same applies to watching videos on this computer. And of course, the lockup continues. I'm not sure what else to try short of a format and full reinstall. I've heard of a lot of people having this problem with the 9600XT. So far, I haven't seen any solution but "turn off AGP read and write", which is ridiculous as it slows the card down to a grind.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that it only messes up using the latest games, probably DirectX at fault? I'll try udating directX.

I wish I'd thought of that Thanks :p. I'll let you know fi that works, but given the number of other people with this problem with this card, I'm unsure if that will help at all.

That's very common problem with 9600xt. Do not turn off fast write becouse it's supposed to be on on 9600 series.. The only way i know you can fix it is setting agp from 8x to 4x.. dont worry, you wont notice any performance loss becouse its really small difference between 8x and 4x.. Hope that helps.. it helped me :)

Switching from 8x to 4x does not seem like it would produce a small loss of performance, but a large one. Nonetheless, I will try that :/. Thank you.

It's maybe 1% loss.. trust me.. the real difference is between agp 2x and 4x.. but 4x and 8x is almost the same..

That's pretty crazy. Can anyone else confirm this? I'll try it in a sec, just installing the new directX first.

Well that's working fine with no noticeable drop in fps. AGP 4x. Thanks for the tip :D. I'll post another "ARGG KILL MY COMPUTER" thread if it locks up again but so far it's behaving itself.

Is there nobody out there that can help? It's a pretty common problem, I'd have figured someone might have solved it by now.

problem is that old(ish) games like eve and such are simply not designed with the newest graphics cards in mind for example i still have an old geforce 2 mmx and i can run all the graphics on max,yet i have never had even so much as a whimper of a graphics problem. Imho its just not really worth forking out hundreds for a shiny new card that sports features that no game can use yet :P

I have the Same Card, I get no lock up , But as the latest catalyst Drivers come out I've noticed Flickering in EvE only, I've tried the Omega Drivers as well and they are a pile of Poo.
Sticking with the Drivers about 3 months ago seems to Keep it running smoothly.

Er.. eve is not an old game. The graphics engine is designed to take advantage of the latest DirectX features, which require the latest graphics card to fully exploit at a decent FPS. Games are not made with graphics cards in mind, nor are graphics cards made which are not backwardly compatible with at least the current and previous few generations of games. In short, you have no idea what you're talking about. I'm getting a problem with this graphics card which is as widely supported as any popular graphics card and is one of the most used graphics cards of today (reference: the latest valve survey on Steam). Not everyone gets this problem (reference: the post directly below your one), meaning it's not a compatability problem.
If you have nothing constructive to add rather than telling me to downgrade to play eve, I would appreciate if you didn't post. You're free to do so, of course, and I'm grateful for any help to resolve my situation, but telling me your old graphics card works fine isn't going to stop mine locking up, is it?

considering my main comp uses a 9600 xt video card with the latest ati drivers, reinstalled last week, and runs one eve client fine. I would say your problem lies somewhere else in your computer, and is just manifesting in your video output.
I said one client, since 2 eventually causes a "Bad Pool Call" BSoD for me.

I have a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939 and had problems with my Powercolor 9600XT. Did you changed the 8X/4X in the BIOS or at the driver level? Have you updated the Mainboard BIOS? Is there a flash update for your vid card?

Just off the wall, is it possible your comp is overheating - I.E. the fan on the vid card is sounding like a jet engine before it locks up? I have the same card and occasionally had the same problem and found out this was my problem. Modded the case and problem has gone away and can run two clients with hardly ever havign the Vid fan turn on. Check us out

Possibly, but since disabling AGP read and write solves the problem, it's definitely a fault in one of the systems that interacts with. That means the card, the RAM or the motherboard.

It's possible. My system temp is 25 degrees centigrade and my CPU surface temperature is 32 degrees centigrade but I was somewhat skeptical of the design of the card when putting it in - the fan is pointing downward. I mean... heat rises. Why would they put the card facing down? Is there a temperature sensor on the card? If there isn't, I'll just have a look at my air flow, maybe rearrange my case fans to cover that area more effectively.

I changed the 4x in the drivers. Would that make a difference? I updated the chipset drivers for my motherboard but I was unable to flash my bios due to not having a bloody clue how to :p. And I haven't checked if there's a chipset update for the 9600XT. Maybe there is.

I know there is a driver set that lets you see the temp, but maybe just run with your case open and see if it stays stable longer?

Yeah, I was thinking of trying that tomorrow, run it on its side with the side off to help the heat dissipate. We're having a bit of a heat wave at the moment.
