Is anyone elsa having problems readingthese new fonts, like the wallet? I think it's WAY to small... Is there any way to change it?

Yep, what's happened.
I run on a 17" TFT @ the native 1280x1024 resolution and the new font for market, wallet, drones on the overview are terrible; etc, are almost unreadable. On the orders tab on the Wallet the Selling and Buying are missing the 'G' they're so big and cumbersome.
I don't think it's the font is small; it's just bad.

For starters the font has to be sans-serif. Serif fonts this small is never readable. Then there has to be an option in the preferences to change font-size.
Seriously, the way it is now is just plain useless.

The wallet font is too small on my screen, big font is too big (e.g. the "buyin", "sellin" at the market orders window). 17"; 1280x960

I had *some* problems with some of the aesthetic changes made in Cold War (including the font), but I must say that this new tinkering has broken the look of the game entirely, in my opinion. One of the lovely things about Eve was always its immersiveness: the clean, futuristic lines of the game, its elegant, clinical look and feel that matched the subject so well. Eve has always sold on its looks in the first instance.
The latest font change - both the absurdly tiny, inappropriately fancy font used for the drones and char sheets amongst others, and the (absolutely hideous) big, stupid, ugly capitals used in the selected item and market windows - break this look altogether. Many might mock me for these words, but I have to say that they spoil the feel of the game for me - it's like playing an old PD game, not something that's been lovingly crafted by professionals. Why would you go and change something like this, that patently wasn't broken in the first place (those fonts of last year were perfectly functional and clean)? It smacks, I have to say, of having nothing better to do than to 'redesign' what doesn't need it, and in this case, the redesigned publication has gone from looking like a glossy colour supplement to a flyer for a village fete. What's next - Comic Sans for the titles and Bodoni for the detail? Worrying.
I know CCP say the 'font issues' are to be looked at, but someone please tell me it's not just a case of making the new text fit into boxes properly. You're going to scrap these horrors of typographical non-design, right? Return to at least a semblance of elegance and simplicity, right?
Right?

CCP, I'm sure you guys were at least trying to make things better with the fonts. However I do not believe that you succeeded in this regard.
I run at 1920 x 1280 res, so clairty of fonts is pretty important to me, and the current one falls far short of beaing easy to read.
Please either change them back or give us a setting to change them ourselves.

Yes, PLEASE leave the fonts as they were or at least make them more readable..
After the initial shock that I should've listened to my mother and not sit in front of the monitor so much... my next thought was that CCP has signed some secret agreement with some secret optometrist agency..
Either way PLEASE fix this.
(FYI I'm using 1152x864 on 19" monitor)

Ahem...yes...my apologies for coming off a bit harsh there. I'm sure CCP do have better things to do than look at UI design and font functionality/aesthetics, and I'm sure they're doing it. But that makes the decision to change these things all the more baffling.
So I'm sorry about the tone of my initial post, but the first sight of these changes came as quite a shock. Seriously, I hope someone at CCP takes a look at the textual interface of the game pre-Cold War, takes a look at the current one, and puts things right. For me, that would be to revert to the former; but, at the very least, to take things back pre-latest patch.
Games are all about enjoyment, and look and feel are very much part of that. So as well as the functional considerations (e.g. what's easiest to read), please have some more thought for the style of the game. Comic Sans wouldn't cut it on either front, and nor does this.
So, no offence intended to the designers, but do rethink where you're going with this.

new font is nice and crisp. No complaints here, but an option of 2-3 other fonts might suit the optically challenged folks (or those running off caffiene vapours )

I can read the fonts, but they look awful. And the big one is certainly big enough - in fact, it's too big. It's just fugly, full stop.

I agree the font change was a poor decision. The large font is oversized and simplistic. The market font is nice, but very tiny when you're screen is at 1600x1200.
This all smacks of a "quick fix" someone slapped on some perceived problem. Clearly your never going to satisfy your customers until you add options to select a preferred font/size to the various windows (chat, market, wallet, etc)
And the font showing current drone's actions is so small I can't even see it. Ok, sad joke.
There was a dev in the help channel the day of the patch release and he was frowning at the idea of ppl manually changing the game fonts, but he wouldn't come right out and say it constituted modifying the client and therefore against the EULA. Personally, I think I'm going to try a little careful tinkering and see what happens. I really don't think I can make it any worse! lol. (I'll be making backups of any effected files of course so I can replace them for the next patch.)

looks like they only tested that at 800x600 solution ... hehe
its damm small on 1024x768 but still readable even if a bit washed out ... and for people with TFT on 1280 and higher ... it should be VERY VERY small ...
and why changing the font in the market to bigger onces !?!? does that do any good ? beside i can read my bill from 10 m away now ? but the assest window only from 10 mm away ...

there is nothing *crisp* about the new fonts. Its now smaller and blurry. why in the hell was this change even made? it was fine before. now the font is so incredibly small in some places its impossible to read and ridiculously HUGE it other places the letters wrap around! to the individual who made the adjustments: did you bother testing it to see how it would look prior to the launch?

Makes you wonder what exactly their QA department does.
QA: "Ummm, the font in the wallet looks like sh*t."
DEV: "That's the way it is supposed to be."
QA: "Oh, OK!"

While I can read it, it is very small and is far too 'rounded'. The previous two fonts were fine for me, but this new one is just horrible.

Anyone notice that the size of the new font in the overview makes No Target Selected not fit in the overview window?

Edited by: Alabaster Plate on 07/09/2005 07:22:27 1. Fonts - At least, ladies and gentlemen, that is all there is to whine about in this patch.
2. Gameplay. It does not make the game unplayable does it now?
3. CCP are fixing this as a massive priority - so have a little bit of patience.
4. It's a shame the fonts on the forum didn't get nerfed to prevent the purile whining.

I run with a 19 inch lcd, 10 inch inches from my nose to the monitor, 20/20 vision, modern graphics card.
Now - the big fonts. Assume it was a generic font to make unicode easier - dandy. Unattractive, doesn't match - project manager needs to nab a book on typography usage is the only thing I can suggest if you aren't seeing the aesthetic issue. Here is where to put the "style" though, not in the small, compact areas where legibility is king.
The new (freeware) ttf font is variable width. Thats the first thing that has to change based upon usage. It also is bolded, so looks antialiased (and likely being antialiased again on some level by either the engine, modern graphics drivers, or both). It's also not terribly aesthetic, it just hints too much at comic sans smashed into lucida.
And here is the big one - drop shadows. The crispest font in the game uses em. Its something I noticed when I started playing the game (the simple trick has been a staple of a lot of graphics designers for years), and saw it go by the wayside after unicode went in for the main chat window. You can see exactly what I mean by looking at the text of the names of people in the list to the right in a chat window. See that 1px or so black drop shadow? This simple and effective typography trick is missing from every area where the font is "blurry".
I've said this to a dev over a week ago in SiSi, posted threads about it on GD. Posting here since the comments might not get moderated off of this thread as it did on the others.
This issue is very important, typography makes up a lot of this game. All the quick solutions are going to quasimodo it.

We make extensive use of an ingame site, which basically runs our corp. Besides the fonts in the game UI itself, it seems the IGB really screws up standard tags like < h1 > to < h7 >. Headers made using these tags are just HUGE and are almost ripping the page layout apart.
Please fix this CCP. UI font is either way too small or way too big, and in the IGB it's even worse.
I'd hate to have to fix that site so it renders good in the IGB again, but then it would most likely start to suck in a standard browser. :(
