This has never happened to me before.
I was running a mission in a 0.3 system, not near a planet or asteroid belt. I had been there about 20 minutes when two pirates warped in to about 60km from me, one in an Eagle, the other an Apoc, and proceeded to lock me down and attack...being set up for level 4 missions I had no means to retaliate.
I have NEVER been attacked while on a mission before, only at gates when coming and going. Has the patch changed something? Could it be an exploit? Have I just been lucky up till now in getting away with it? ========================================= * I'm ALLOWED to cheat. I'm a STARSHIP. * ========================================= |

But scan probes have been in for ages, and I thought they took some time to locate the target...as I said I was only there 20 minutes or so.
Can scan probes detect a ship if it's in deadspace? (I wasn't, I'm just wondering if deadspace missions will be safer) ========================================= * I'm ALLOWED to cheat. I'm a STARSHIP. * ========================================= |

Not being funny but I've underlined part of your post I don't really understand. How could you not be able to retaliate? Isn't your mission running raven rigged for megatanking and torp spammage? Couldn't you just lock the apoc and start shooting?

a ship cant warp to you in a dead space mission, he warps to the gate, then has to activate the gate and go the same route as you.
Nothing has changed in the last patch to make this easier, its just ccp made it more proffitable for people to go to low sec once more, so now pirates are more interested in empire piracey

Edited by: Deja Thoris on 07/09/2005 05:00:06 If they used probes then they suck. They should have dropped 20 or less from you.
And you could shoot back. You were at no disadvantage, they could not scramble you and vice versa.

If I remember correctly, mission points are very close to celestial objects, less than 1au and on the sol plane.
If this is true, a normal probe scanner can find you in 5-6 minutes after seeing you in full-range full-angle scanner. An experienced one can do it in under 3 minutes.

I agree with a fellow red haired gallente here... two of us attacked a lv4 mission set up apoc, and the tank he was running was unbeleiveble. Plus you're set up to do good damage too.

EW jammed, could not target. As yet NPCs don't make much use of EW, so no need to defend against it.
Originally by: Deja Thoris If they used probes then they suck. They should have dropped 20 or less from you.
Yes, reviewing they must have been much closer than I at first thought.
Originally by: Deja Thoris And you could shoot back. You were at no disadvantage, they could not scramble you and vice versa.
No I could not shoot back...could not target either the Eagle OR the Apoc, so I assume I was jammed somehow. NO WCS fitted as some have surmised, as the Raven is so badly gimped for damage output that it needs all low slots to fit BCU's to successfully complete missions with BS's with half-decent tank (if you use Torps then you can't kill the cruisers due to the sig radius effect)
You can close this thread now, I'll just call it a (very bloody expensive) learning experience. In the pirate's defence, they allowed me to ransom the ship and left when I padi up, but pretty much bankrupted me in the process...I won't be going into any unsafe space for QUITE some time. ========================================= * I'm ALLOWED to cheat. Apologies for veering slightly off-topic here, but my query is still vaguely related, and if it is answered I won't need to create an entirely new thread.
Can you find mission acceleration gates using scan probes?
My intention is to attack mission runners in deadspeace, when they do not expect it. Since mission runners fit the best equipment, they are the best targets. However, their deadspace missions are impossible to locate using the regular scanner.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I don't know WHY I'm helping exactly the scummy kind of pirate who attacked me, but hey, it's only a game.
I can see why you would want to attack mission runners in open space. But deadspace is a different matter...in open space you can warp to your target and so be very close, able to scramble them etc. When you find a deadspace gate, you cannot warp to the ship - you'd have ot find the gate, then follow the "normal" route through. When you get through the gate with your target on the other side, there is NO guarantee that he'll be anywhere near the warp-in beacon (I sit at 200km from it quite often when I run a level 4), so there's no guarantee you'll be able to lock him, and at best all you can hope for is that he warps out - you gain nothing.
Take my advice and stick to open space...from personal, bitter experience, that works. ========================================= * I'm ALLOWED to cheat. I'm a STARSHIP. * ========================================= |

I've used probes and found people in complexes. When you warp to the ship's signature, it doesn't warp you to the ship, it warps you to the gate to the complex. So being 60k away isn't a fault with the scanning, or the covert ops position. You can only warp in to the warp-in point from the gate and hope he's close enough to scramble.
I imagine is works the same way for finding deadspace mission runners.
